Glucocorticoid Modulation Of Casein Gene Transcription In Mouse Mammary Gland, Ranjan Ganguly, Nozer M. Mehta, Nivedita Ganguly, M. R. Banerjee
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The influence of cortisol and prolactin on casein gene expression in the mammary gland of lactating BALB/c mice was measured by using a specific cDNA probe to 15S casein mRNA (cDNAcsn). Casein mRNA (mRNAcsn) level in the mammary gland was decreased by 85% 5 days after adrenal ablation, but then was increased 4.4-fold 12 hr after a single injection of hydrocortisone-21-acetate. An 80% decrease in serum prolactin level, induced by the prolactin inhibitor 2- bromo-α-ergocryptin (CB-154), did not alter the level of mRNAcsn in the gland. Specific transcription of the casein gene in nuclei isolated …

The leaf-nosed bats of the New World family Phyllostomatidae occur from the southwestern United States through tropical Central and South America. Members of this family are also found throughout the Antilles. The ecological associations of the species in this family seem to be rather broad; species are found in humid tropical to semiarid and arid subtropical environments. Diversity in feeding is readily apparent ranging from nectivores (Glossophaga), frugivores (Artibeus), sanguivores (Desmodus), to omnivores (Phyllostomus) (see review by Glass, 1970; Gardner, this volume).
To understand better the biology of phyllostomatid bats, it is …

Utilization Of Aspen Pellets As A Partial Roughage Replacement For Lactating Dairy Cows, Deborah Sharples Kipp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A complete switchback design using ten lactating cows divided into two groups of five was used to evaluate rations containing either (A) 30% dry matter from aspen pellets, 30% OM from corn silage, and 40% DM from a 28% crude protein· concentrate mix, or (B) 60% OM from corn silage and 40% OM from the concentrate mix, to determine if aspen could serve as a partial roughage for lactating dairy cows. All cows were at least 80 days into lactation at the start of the trial. Aspen contained on a DM basis, 1.9% crude protein, 80.3% neutral detergent fiber, 64.5% …
Siderocapsa Major-- Fact Or Artifact?, Ray W. Swanson
Siderocapsa Major-- Fact Or Artifact?, Ray W. Swanson
Masters Theses
The validity of the genus Siderocapsa, a group of unicellular iron-depositing bacteria, has been a subject of debate for many years. Lack of photomicroscopic and cultural studies has kept this group in taxonomic obscurity. Bacteria were collected from the Campus pond, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois, by a submerged slide/coverslip technique. These bacteria were identified as Siderocapsa major according to the description of Molisch (1909). Scanning electron microscopy of Siderocapsa major microcolonies has shown cells (0.5 by 1.15 μm), in a clear central well (2-6 μm), surrounded by an amorphous material which accumulates with the age of the colony. …
Bacteriophage Populations In Wastewater Effluent, Guy William Lawrence
Bacteriophage Populations In Wastewater Effluent, Guy William Lawrence
Masters Theses
Effluent samples were taken at various stages of sewage treatment at a local wastewater treatment plant. Primary, secondary, tertiary and post-chlorinated effluents were sampled. The agar overlay method was used to determine the numbers of plaque-forming bacteriophage particles on thirty-six species of enteric bacteria from the Eastern Illinois University stock culture collection. Twenty-three pure culture phage isolates were prepared from selected plaques and their host range specificity was determined. For every host organism tested, a fifty percent or greater reduction of bacteriophage was evident through the sewage treatment process. Results obtained from investigation of host range specificity indicate that potential …

Gulf and Caribbean Research
The gastropod genus Probythinella Thiele, 1928, is considered a senior synonym of Vioscalba Morrison, 1965. Probythinella louisianae (Morrison, 1965) n. comb. tentatively is recognized as a valid species distinct from the closely related P. lacustris (Baker, 1928) and P. protera Pilsbry, 1953. The eastern range of P. louisianae is extended to Mobile Bay, Alabama. Limited observations on the habitat and reproduction of P. louisianae are reported.
The Effect Of Body Size And Algal Suspension Density On Filtration Rate And Assimilation Efficiency Of Three Marine Mussels, Mytilus Californianus, Mytilus Edulis And Perna Canaliculus With Consideration Of The Growth Of Each Species, Thomas B. Mccormick Iii
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Rates of uptake of organic and inorganic suspended particulate material by suspension feeding bivalve molluscs have been studied since the nineteenth century (see Viallanes, 1892) . Studies have investigated molluscan feeding mechanisms, filtration capabilities, food assimilation and metabolism. The bulk of this work has been directed towards the mussel Mytilus edulis Linnaeus and the oyster Crassostrea virginica Gmelin (see reviews by Galtsoff, 1964; Ali, 1970; Jorgensen, 1975; 1976; and Winter, 1978). More recently the growth of mussels, oysters, clams and scallops has been quantitatively studied in controlled systems to assess the biological potential of these molluscs in an aquaculture setting …

The Foraging Strategy Of Diadema Antillarum (Philippi) (Echinodermata: Echinoidea), Robert Charles Carpenter
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Diadema antillarum (Philippi) is a common echinoid grazer in Caribbean reef areas. Field observations in st . Croix, u.s.v.r. an.d Disc. overy Bay, Jamaica and laboratory experiments demonstrate that these urchins have a strong feeding preference for algal turf. Seasonal variation in the abundance of this preferred food item results in increased incidences of live coral predation. Experimental manipulations demonstrate that over the short term food availability is more important than urchin density in determining prey item choice. Size and abundance data show an inverse relationship between urchin density and mean individual urchin size. There is also an inverse relationship …

Larvae of the predatory crustacean Squilla empusa were collected from the plankton in Chesapeake Bay and reared in the laboratory to permit description of the pelagic stages before the postlarval stage.
Characters such as rostral length and spinulation, carapace spinulation, relative size of telson, overall body size, and appearance probably are of more value for specific than for generic identification. The presence or absence of teeth on the dactylus of the second maxilliped, the presence or absence of a spine on the basis of the second maxilliped, and the number of epipods may be useful characters in determining generic alliances …

The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder
The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder
Masters Theses
Introduction
Daphnia pulex Leydig (Crustacea, Cladocera) is a common component of the zooplankton of freshwater lakes and ponds. Its importance in the aquatic trophic structure as food for small fish has long been recognized.
Typical populations of daphnia consist almost exclusively of females. Under favorable conditions this situation is perpetuated by parthenogenetic reproduction. Eggs produced in this manner are referred to as parthenogenetic or summer eggs. When stressed by falling temperatures, drought, overpopulation, or starvation, populations shift to sexual.reproduction. Parthenogenetic eggs are produced which develop into males. Other eggs known as ephippial or winter eggs are also produced, which after …

Growth Analysis Of Tall Fescue Genotypes Differing In Yield And Leaf Photosynthesis, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson
Growth Analysis Of Tall Fescue Genotypes Differing In Yield And Leaf Photosynthesis, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Relationships between leaf photosynthesis and yield have not been well defined in forage grasses. Therefore, leaf growth, dry matter distribution, carbohydrate concentration, and growth analysis of four genotypes of tall fescue (Festuca mundinacea Schreb.) were examined. Genotypes, selected in the field for high and low CO2 exchange rate (CER) in combination with high and low yield, were compared in an attempt to study the relationship between photosynthesis and yield. In the vegetative growth stage, high yielding genotypes produced greater amounts of all plant parts (leaves, stem bases, and roots) than did low yielding genotypes; however, low yielding genotypes …

Serologic And Hematologic Values Of Bison In Colorado, Edward O. Keith, James Ellis, Robert W. Phillips, Maxine M. Benjamin
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Recent economic and aesthetic interest in North American bison (Bison bison) has lead to increased interstate transport of these animals. Serologic and hematologic standards for bison are needed to detect disease in transported animals as well as within herds. This paper describes variation in blood physiological parameters in bison caused by variations in diet and season. Blood was taken from six bison and analyzed for serologic and hematologic parameters. Significant variation was found in blood urea nitrogen, chloride, cholesterol, creatinine, eosinophil, glucose, hemoglobin, lactic dehydrogenase, leukocyte, packed cell volume, potassium, serum globulin, serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, SGPT, and …

Leaf Growth, Leaf Aging, And Photosynthetic Rate Of Tall Fescue Genotypes, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson
Leaf Growth, Leaf Aging, And Photosynthetic Rate Of Tall Fescue Genotypes, Wallace Wilhelm, C. J. Nelson
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Leaf growth and leaf aging both influence the total amount of CO, fixed by a particular leaf in the canopy during its photosynthetically productive life. Four genotypes of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) were selected for all combinations of high and low COB exchange rates (CER) and yield. The purpose of this study was to determine CER during aging and leaf growth rates of tall fescue genotypes in growth chambers and in the field on a Mexico silt loam (Udollic Ochraqualfs; fine, montmarillonitic, mesic). Leaf growth of vegetative tillers in controlled environments was continuous throughout the day for all …
Isolation And Chemico-Physiologic Characterization Of A Parotid Hormone Activity From Porcine Glands, Jean-Marc Tieche
Isolation And Chemico-Physiologic Characterization Of A Parotid Hormone Activity From Porcine Glands, Jean-Marc Tieche
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
For the past decade, evidence has accumulated which suggests that the resistance of the teeth to dental decay is in part under systemic control. It was shown that the resistance is accomplished through the optimal operation of a dentinal fluid transport mechanism which is believed to be hormonally controlled by the hypothalamic-parotid gland endocrine axis. Although circumstantial evidence for such an endocrine function was strong, the isolation of a parotid hormone which stimulates the dentinal fluid transport mechanism remained to be accomplished.
Using modern biochemical techniques, a methodology was designed to isolate and purify the hormone from porcine parotid glands. …
