Effect Of Cold Shock On The Metabolism Of Trichomonas Gallinae, James J. Daly
Effect Of Cold Shock On The Metabolism Of Trichomonas Gallinae, James J. Daly
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The influence of cold (4°C) used to prepare cells for metabolic investigations was examined with Trichomonas gallinae in this study. Cells washed with cold diluent in a refrigerated centrifuge were found to be less stimulated in their gas production at 37°C when exposed to glucose or maltose than cells washed at room temperature conditions. Such cold-prepared cells had higher initial glycogen contents after washing, faster endogenous glycogen degradation rates when incubated at 37 °C, but lower glycogen synthesis in the presence of glucose or maltose when compared to cells not prepared in the cold. However, uptake of glucose and maltose …

Quantitative Demonstration Of Cell Surface Involvement In A Plant-Animal Symbiosis: Lectin Inhibition Of Reassociation, R. H. Meints, Rosevelt L. Pardy
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The freshwater hydra, Hydra viridis is normally associated with Chlorella-like, algal symbionts which inhabit the host's digestive cells. Under experimental conditions bleached hydra will reassociate with algae harvested from green hydra, but not from our cultures of wild type Chlorella or strain NC64A which when originally isolated from Paramecium bursaria was symbiotically competent. Because of its demonstrated selectivity, the reassociation process is hypothesized to involve a recognition interface whose active participants are the algae cell wall and the digestive cell membrane. The data presented here confirm the hypothesis and suggest some potential molecular characteristics of the interacting partners. Concanavalin …

The Effects Of N-Serve On The Availability Of Urea And Ureaformaldehyde Nitrogen On Lolium Perenne L., Ronald E. Schroll
Masters Theses
Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effect of "N-Serve" (DOW) on the availability of urea nitrogen and the subsequent greening effect on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) seedlings as compared to the availability of nitrogen and subsequent greening from a controlled release ureaformaldehyde fertilizer. A low organic matter sandy loam soil and a high organic matter clay loam soil were used in this study. Soil treatments of urea and ureaformaldehyde fertilizers were applied and incorporated at concentrations of 0, 25, 38, and 50 ppm-N. N-Serve at concentrations of 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0 ppm active ingredient were applied and …

The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Dietary Linoleic Acid On Serum Cholesterol And Hdl-Cholesterol In Healthy Male Subjects, Donna Miller Davidge
The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Dietary Linoleic Acid On Serum Cholesterol And Hdl-Cholesterol In Healthy Male Subjects, Donna Miller Davidge
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Sixteen healthy male subjects were randomly divided into four equal groups and fed a nutritionally balanced 30 calories % fat diet, with approximately 2500 calories and less than 15 mg cholesterol/day, for 28 days. Within each group a constant level of linoleic acid was given for the duration of the study--either 2, 6, 14 or 18 % linoleic acid. Rate of changes in total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and the ratio of total to HDL-cholesterol were subjected to analysis of variance and regression analysis. The results showed changes in total cholesterol and ratio of total to HDL-cholesterol to be significant. The …
Effect Of Diet On Aerobic Performance, Maureen Hall Fennerty
Effect Of Diet On Aerobic Performance, Maureen Hall Fennerty
Student Work
Aerobic performance is affected by a number of physiological, psychological, sociological and environmental factors (Astrand, 1977). Among the many physiological factors nutrition plays an important part. However, when considering what constitutes a balanced diet, nutritionists express varying opinions as to what percentage of protein, fat and carbohydrate should be included for the general populace and the athlete. Mayer and Bullen (1960) in their review of literature on nutrition and athletic performance concluded a balanced diet is adequate for the athlete.

The Interaction Of Nutrition And Infection: A Succinct Review, Clarence Lee, Georgiana Aboko-Cole
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
Malnutrition combined with susceptibility to infection threatens the health and survival of a large portion of the world's population. Of the many components of the host-parasite relation, nutrition has not received the attention it deserves. There has been increasing activity in recent years on the elucidation of the role nutritional factors play in the behavior of both host and parasite. This paper reviews the effects vitamins exert on the course of parasitic infections.

Reproductive Variability In Lytechinus Variegatus (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) From Different Habitats In A Florida West Coast Estuary, Robert G. Ernest
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck, 1916) is a sea urchin inhabiting shallow sub-littoral environments from Beaufort, North Carolina to southern Brazil. Although it has been collected extensively for embryological material in the southeastern United States (Harvey, 1956; Brookbank, 1968). there have been relatively few studies of its reproduction. Gonad indices were used to follow its annual reproductive cycle at Bermuda and Miami (Moore et al., 1963; Moore and Lopez, 1972), while elsewhere, only observations of spawn- ing have been reported (Boolootian, 1966).
In the Anclote estuary near Tarpon Springs, Florida, Lytechinus is the most conspicuous of the macroepibenthic invertebrates, and where requisite …

The Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Fish Eggs And Larvae In Hempstead Bay Estuary, Joseph Adelard Lessard
OES Theses and Dissertations
The ichthyoplankton of Hempstead Bay estuary was sampled from December 1972 to mid March 1974. Eleven stations were sampled by towing a 0.5 meter diameter plankton net. Eggs were most abundant during June and July with an average concentration calculated to be above 5,500/100m3. Egg densities were the lowest during the fall and winter. Larvae were most frequently taken from March through July with densities varying greatly among the samples. The eggs of Brevoortia tyrannus, Anchoa mitchilli, Tautoga onitis, Tautogolabrus adspersus, and Scophthalmus aguosus and the larvae of Menidia menidia, Ammodvtes hexapterus and Pseudopleuronectes americanus constituted most …
