Food Quality And Energy Usage In Foodservice Systems: Convective Thermal Processing Of Turkey Rolls, M. E. Matthews, M. E. Zabik, R. B. Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
This study evaluated sensory and nutritional qualities, microbioloqical and chemical safety of turkey rolls and enerqy use durinq convective thermal processing. Turkey rolls were heat processed in home or institutional convection ovens to an internal temperature of 77 to 80°C in the geometric center of the roll. Treatment combinations included three heat-processing temperatures (105, 135, and 165°C) and two holding treatments (not chilled and chilled for 24 hr) and three hot-holding times (0, 60 and 120 min). Sensory studies of white turkey meat roasted at 165°C and reheated showed that juiciness decreased significantly (p<0.05), compared to roasting at 105 or 135°C without reheating. Juiciness was also decreased significantly (p<0.05) as hot-holding progressed (0 to 120 min).

During the last three decades plant-parasitic nematodes have received increasing attention. This was due mainly to the discovery during the years between 1943-1953 of the first efficient nematicides, DD, EDE and DBCP. This discovery gave a strong impetus to established nematology laboratories and led to the establishment of laboratories in previously "virgin," or nearly so, territories. As a result, there was an increase in the number of nematologists and taxonomic activity. This is particularly true in those areas new to nematology, because the soil fauna is virtually unknown and taxonomy is one of the few activities fitting with limited material …

Combining Ability Effects For Mineral Elements In Forage Sorghum Hybrids, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, W. M. Ross
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The concentrations of minerals in forages are important in satisfying animal requirements, but little attention has been given to determining these concentrations in forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.) breeding programs. In this 2-yr study, the objectives were to determine the contents, genetic variability, combining ability effects, and correlations for 12 mineral elements in 49 experimental hybrids of forage sorghum. Mineral elements studied were N, Mg, Si, P, S, CI, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn. General combining ability (GCA) effects exceeded specific combining ability (SCA) effects for all elements except P, CI, and Fe in females, and …

Validation Of The Otolith Increment Aging Technique For Striped Bass, Morone Saxatilis, Larvae Reared Under Suboptimal Feeding Conditions, Cynthia Jones, Edward B. Brothers
OES Faculty Publications
Striped bass, Morone saxatilis, larvae were reared in the laboratory for 97 days to validate the otolith increment aging technique for this species. Otolith-increment deposition rates were determined under optimal laboratory conditions for growth and under three conditions of restricted feeding and using both light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Under optimal laboratory conditions. increments were deposited daily from the fourth day after hatching through the first 2 months of life and were discernible with the light microscope. For larvae reared under restricted feeding regimes and readings done with the light microscope, counts did not reflect true age. Counts …
Is Growth Of Eelgrass Nitrogen Limited? A Numerical Simulation Of The Effects Of Light And Nitrogen On The Growth Dynamics Of Zostera Marina, Richard C. Zimmerman, Robert D. Smith, Randall S. Alberte
Is Growth Of Eelgrass Nitrogen Limited? A Numerical Simulation Of The Effects Of Light And Nitrogen On The Growth Dynamics Of Zostera Marina, Richard C. Zimmerman, Robert D. Smith, Randall S. Alberte
OES Faculty Publications
A numerical model of nitrogen uptake and growth was developed for the temperate seagrass Zostera marina L. Goals were to evaluate the relative effects of light and nitrogen availability on nitrogen uptake and partitioning between leaf and root tissue, and to estimate nitrogen concentrations in the sedment and water column required to saturate growth. Steady-state predictions are quite robust with respect to a range of parameter values justified by available data The calculations indicated that roots are probably more important in overall nitrogen acquisition in most light and nitrogen environments encountered in situ, but may contribute less than 50 …

The Aquatic Insects Of Mill Creek, California, Eugene J. Bisagno
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The study of insects has been a hobby for me for more than twenty years. Their diversity and adaptation to many habitats has been of particular interest. Ever since the removal of my first aquatic nymph from the crashing waters of the American River, I have been especially fascinated, with these insects. Since I had access to a relatively undisturbed year round stream, I chose to study the aquatic insects of this stream. The purpose of this study was to survey the aquatic insect fauna of Mill Creek during the course of a year and relate these findings to the …

The Role Of Iron Nutrition In Regulating Patterns Of Photosynthesis And Nitrogen Metabolism In The Green Alga Scenedesmus Quadricauda, Dennis Raymond Ades
Dissertations and Theses
The influence of iron nutrition on patterns of photosynthetic behavior, nitrogen metabolism, and fixed-carbon allocation is reported for a common freshwater green alga. Cultures of Scenedesmus quadricauda were grown in Fraquil medium in which iron concentrations ranged from 1.0 μM to 0.01 μM (log 10-6 to 10-8 M, respectively). Carbon 14 and nitrogen uptake experiments were conducted at photosynthetically saturating and subsaturating photon flux densities.

Nine, male, varsity track athletes, from the University of Northern Iowa performed two runs to exhaustion on a motor-driven treadmill at 15 mph. Sodium bicarbonate (NaHC03), or a placebo calcium carbonate (Caco3 ), amounting to .3 grams per kilogram of body weight was orally ingested 135 minutes prior to exercise. Venous blood was collected immediately before exercise, two minutes after exercise, and three minutes …
Biochemical And Histological Evaluation Of Normal Human Epidermis Vs Cultured Human Epidermis, Ngo Thi Bich Lien
Biochemical And Histological Evaluation Of Normal Human Epidermis Vs Cultured Human Epidermis, Ngo Thi Bich Lien
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Cultured human keratinocytes were grown in vitro for transplantation purposes in case of severe burns. Single keratinocytes were harvested from human epidermis and grown in culture flasks such that multilayered sheets of keratinocyte cells were harvestable in approximately three weeks. In order to evaluate cultured epidermis for equivalency with normal human epidermis, biochemical and histological studies were performed. Thin sections of cultured epidermis were shown to be composed of cells that had undergone developmental differentiation, but not terminal differentiation. Biochemical analyses of keratin and prekeratin proteins isolated from cultured epidermis indicated that cultured keratinocytes have electrophoretic patterns similar to keratins/prekeratins …

Susan Mehrtens' Note:
We have in this tape the recollections of one of the most prolific authors in the field of mouse mutants, an indefatigable co-worker of Margaret Dickey, Margaret Green and currently, Muriel Davison. Full of scientific terms, this tape reveals clearly Lane's thorough absorption in the field to which she has devoted nearly the last forty years of her life. Toward the end of this tape, Lane alludes to Earl Green's sexist attitude, which other women have also mentioned to me on and off tape. Lane also waxes eloquently here about her efforts to establish a hiera'rchy within …
Division S-4-Soil Fertility And Plant Nutrition: Recovery Of Fertilizer Nitrogen By Wheat As Affected By Fallow Method, J. F. Power, Wallace Wilhelm, John W. Doran
Division S-4-Soil Fertility And Plant Nutrition: Recovery Of Fertilizer Nitrogen By Wheat As Affected By Fallow Method, J. F. Power, Wallace Wilhelm, John W. Doran
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The fate of fertilizer N applied to crops is of both environmental and economic concern. To follow fertilizer N recovery in western Nebraska, depleted-15N NH4NO3 was surface broadcast in April on winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growing on plots fallowed the previous year by plowing, subtillage, and no-till. Quantities of labeled N taken up by the growing crop, in the upper 100 mm of soil as inorganic N, and in both visible and partially decomposed crop residues, were followed on two sets of plots through the crop-fallow-crop sequence (approximately 117 weeks). About 16 to …

Uptake Of Nitrogen From Soil, Fertilizer, And Crop Residues By No-Till Corn And Soybean, J. F. Power, John W. Doran, Wallace Wilhelm
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The relative availability of nitrogen (N) from indigenous soil organic N, immobilized fertilizer N, currently applied fertilizer N, and crop residues is largely unknown. A non-irrigated experiment was conducted on a silty clay loam at Lincoln, NE, with both continuous soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and corn (Zea mays L.), in which crops were produced with no tillage after surface application of 0, 0.5,1.0, or 1.5 times the quantity of aboveground crop residue produced the previous year. In 1980 and 1981, depleted 15N NH4NO3 (at 45 kg N ha-1) and crop residues …
Receptor-Mediated Binding, Endocytosis And Cellular Processing Of Macromolecules Conjugated With Colloidal Gold, Dean A. Handley
Receptor-Mediated Binding, Endocytosis And Cellular Processing Of Macromolecules Conjugated With Colloidal Gold, Dean A. Handley
Scanning Microscopy
Receptor-mediated expression of cellular functions assures biological specificity, regulation, and control of nutritive and metabolic requirements. The study of receptor-ligand interactions is a central theme in many published reports employing colloidal gold labeling. With the ligand directly conjugated with colloidal gold, the investigator is afforded the opportunity to observe all phases of cellular binding, endocytosis, lysosomal delivery and catobolism. Reviewed are published studies employing direct ligand conjugation with colloidal gold, the relative merits and disadvantages of this type of procedure and data from recent studies investigating endothelial receptor binding of proteins in the coagulation and fibrinolysis cascades.
Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Eggshells Of Contemporary Reptiles, Mary J. Packard, Karl F. Hirsch
Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Eggshells Of Contemporary Reptiles, Mary J. Packard, Karl F. Hirsch
Scanning Electron Microscopy
Eggshells of contemporary turtles and squamate reptiles (lizards, snakes, and the tuatara) are either flexible or rigid, and usually are composed of both a fibrous shell membrane and an overlying calcareous layer. The calcareous layer of turtle eggs is calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite, whereas the crystalline material of squamate eggs generally is calcite. Both rigid and flexible shells of turtle eggs are composed of individual building blocks or shell units. Shell units of rigid shells abut tightly, and few pores penetrate the calcareous layer. In contrast, flexible shells exhibit large numbers of spaces or pores in the …

Studies Of Otoconial Development In A “Giant-Crystal” Strain Of Chicks Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Polarized Light Microscopy, And X-Ray Crystallography, Joanne Ballarino, Howard C. Howland
Scanning Electron Microscopy
Otolith formation was studied in a mutant strain of low-fertility Delaware chicks which exhibit an otolithic defect. In all chicks of this strain, otoliths were present as a fused crystal mass which contained abnormally large (giant) otoconia. Studies of the formation of such otoliths during embryonic development revealed that from the very earliest stages the otoconia were much larger than normal, and in the saccular and utricular otoliths formed a fused mass. These results are interpreted as supporting a hypothesis of the de novo formation of giant otoconia in this giant-crystal strain as opposed to the recrystallization hypothesis proposed for …

The Interface Of Cells And Their Matrices In Mineralized Tissues: A Review, S. J. Jones, A. Boyde, N. N. Ali
Scanning Electron Microscopy
The interface between cells and matrices in mineralized tissues formed in vivo has been studied mainly by looking at the matrix surface, which is easily prepared, and not at the cell surface, which presents problems. Vertebrate calcified tissues range from being acellular to highly cellular, but for all the tissues the formative cells lay down and organise a cell-specific matrix, although this may be deposited initially on a different tissue-type. The formation of hard tissues is a group activity of many cells; resorption is the province of one cell, though it may be controlled by others in the vicinity.
Cell-matrix …

Scanning Electron Microscopy In Bone Pathology: Review Of Methods, Potential And Applications, A. Boyde, E. Maconnachie, S. A. Reid, G. Delling, G. R. Mundy
Scanning Electron Microscopy
This article reviews the applications of SEM methods to human bone pathologies referring to studies made at UCL. We consider the methods which may be most suitable; these prove to be not "routine" in the context of most bio-medical applications of SEM.
Valuable information can be obtained from a bone sample if its edges are ground flat, before making either (a) a matrix surface preparation by washing away all the cells or (b) a mineralising front preparation, by also dissolving the osteoid -for which hydrogen peroxide is recommended to produce a robust specimen. BSE contrast from a cut block surface …
