Some Factors Affecting Male Mating Success In The Giant Waterbug (Belostoma Flumineum Say), Karyn S. Crisman Jan 1989

Some Factors Affecting Male Mating Success In The Giant Waterbug (Belostoma Flumineum Say), Karyn S. Crisman

Masters Theses

Giant waterbugs (Subfamily Belostomatinae) are interesting in that males provide exclusive post-copulatory care of young. This unusual behavior makes this species an excellent study system for investigations of sexual selection theory because in such systems, sex role reversals are predicted. Previous studies indicate that role reversal in giant waterbugs is not complete because males still court females. It is assumed that from this courtship display females can assess male quality and "choose" a superior male. If some males are chosen over others then differential mating success results. This study was undertaken to ascertain some of the factors that affect male …

Weaning Kimberley Cattle Pays Off, D Pratchett, Stuart Young

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Research results show that weaning Kimberley calves when they reach 140kg liveweight is one way of increasing herd productivity by changing management practices. However, removing the bulls from the breeding herd, rather than running them with the cows ywear round as is the practice, does not increase branding percentage.

Characterization Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Roots Versus Root Pulling Resistance As Selection Indices For Draught Tolerance, Mazo Price, R. H. Dilday, Arthur L. Allen

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A technique described as Root Pulling Resistance (RPR) was used to evaluate genotypic differences in root growth and development of 50 rice germplasm accessions and cultivars. Several root characteristics in rice are associated with drought tolerance and avoidance capability of plants. The RPR measurements showed a significant positive correlation with maximum root length (r=0.69), root thickness (r=0.75), branching number (r=0.75), and root dry weight (r= 0.82). Rice genotypes that had a high RPR value were identified as having longer, thicker, and denser root systems. The data indicated that high RPR measurements are strongly correlated with greater root penetration. Munji Sufaid …

Dental Pathology In Selected Carnivores From Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, J. D. Wilhide, V. Rick Mcdaniel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The occurrence and kinds of dental pathology in wild carnivore populations in Arkansas were investigated through examination of 1295 skulls of bobcat (Felis rufus), river otter (Lutra canadensis), gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), coyote (Canis latrans), and raccoon (Procyon lotor). Pulpitis or abscesses in broken or otherwise exposed teeth were noted in all species, but bobcats had the fewest exposures while otter and gray foxhad the most. Osteomyelitis occurred in all species except the bobcat. Caries were noted in the coyote, raccoon, and gray fox. Otter and coyote had alveolar thinning, and coyote had enamel dysplasia and maxillary sinusitis.

The Quest Of Dr. Ernest F. Bashford For Knowledge About Cancer Etiology In Man And Mouse, Anne J. Krush

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Dr. Ernest F. Bashford, an English physician, lived from 1873 to 1923. For many years before his untimely death, he was an officer for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. From articles in the British Medical Journal and other publications, Bashford prepared a volume of reprints (1903-1909) concerning problems, growth, and heredity of cancer, and experiments with breast cancer in mice. Cancer had been studied histologically and clinically, with only speculation as to its origin, nature, and cause in man. He suggested cooperative studies by investigators in many different fields. Concerned with why the growth of cancer seemed limitless, and with problems …

Diversity Of Coprophagous Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) In Grazed Versus Ungrazed Sandhills Prairie In Western Nebraska, Mary Liz Jameson

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Baited pitfall traps were used to compare the dung-feeding Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) of a grazed versus an ungrazed sandhills prairie in western Nebraska. Traps yielded 14,832 coprophagous Scarabaeidae over a 4-week sampling period in 1987. Canthon ebenus (Say), C. pilurarius (L.), Onthophagous hecate Panzer, and O. pennsylvanicus Harold were the dominant species on both prairies. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index indicated that diversity was slightly higher on the grazed site whereas the Margalef diversity index showed the diversities to be nearly the same. Activity and foraging by scarabs (as measured by trapping success) were found to be most closely correlated with temperature …

Fine Structure And Organ Culture Of Chick Embryo Dorsal Aorta, C. Ward Kischer, Michael Jaqua Dec 1988

Fine Structure And Organ Culture Of Chick Embryo Dorsal Aorta, C. Ward Kischer, Michael Jaqua

Scanning Microscopy

Embryonic blood vessels have not been grown in organ culture, in a way which might easily submit them to studies of vascular organogenesis. The chick embryo dorsal aorta is easily accessible and relatively simple to explant to culture. Its organ culture may provide a model for wounding and repair of the intima and/or media and provide a model for studies of growth (or maintenance) and differentiation. Fresh dorsal aorta and its organ culture from the chick embryo was characterized morphologically by light microscopy scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) from days 4 to 18. Explants were incubated up to …

The Pediatrician's Guide To Food Allergy, John A. Anderson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Food allergy occurs in as many as 5% of infants less than 1 year old. Most food sensitivities disappear by age 3 to 4. Most immunologically mediated food allergy reactions are due to type I IgE mechanisms, with skin, gastrointestinal, and respiratory signs and symptoms the most common manifestations. U sing the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) technique and atopic dermatitis as a model, the most common foods to which children are allergic are cow's milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, fish, and soy proteins. Anaphylactic sensitivity in older children often involves crustacean seafoods (eg, shrimp), nuts, peanuts, fish, and eggs. Such …

Effect Of Dietary Factors On Mutagenesis, Metabolism, And Binding To Dna Of Benzo [A] Pyrene And Benzo [A] Pyrene 7, 8-Dihydrodiol, Robin E. Vance

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Ellagic acid (EA), a naturally occurring plant phenol, at concentrations of 5 to 50 pg/plate, inhibited rat liver S9 protein dependent benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P)-induced mutagenesis in Salmonella typhimurium TA 100 by 30-81% and B[a]P 7,8-dihydrodiol (DHD)-induced mutagenesis by 29 to 75%. EA (5-40 juM) did not significantly affect the metabolism of B[a]P or B[a]P 7,8-DHD as determined by high performance liquid chromatographic analysis of the organosoluble fraction and by the quantification of watersoluble conjugates. At these concentrations EA inhibited 3 3 the covalent binding of [ H] B[a]P and [ H] B[a]P 7,8-DHD metabolites to calf thymus DNA by 5 to …

The Effects Of An Employee Fitness Program On Absenteeism And Health Care Costs, Brian C. Bell Nov 1988

The Effects Of An Employee Fitness Program On Absenteeism And Health Care Costs, Brian C. Bell

Student Work

Health care expenditures in the United States have continued to climb at an alarming rate. In 1982, health care expenditures accounted for nearly $322.4 billion of the gross national product (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1982). Health care expenditures are expected to consume nearly 12 percent of the nation's economic output by the year 1990, reaching nearly $756 billion in projected costs (Cullen and Towe, 1983). Although health care costs have climbed at an annual rate of less than 10 percent, these costs have continued to increase in the private sector, which currently absorbs one-fourth of the nation's …

A Plant Root Warmer For Studying Phytophagous Insect Development And Fecundity At Temperatures Below Host Plant Tolerance, D. H. Akey, G. D. Butler, J. W. Radin Nov 1988

A Plant Root Warmer For Studying Phytophagous Insect Development And Fecundity At Temperatures Below Host Plant Tolerance, D. H. Akey, G. D. Butler, J. W. Radin

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

A simple root-warming device maintains the plants' roots at a higher temperature than that at which the rest of the plant is held. This permits the host plant to retain turgor, not wilt, and therefore remain suitable for and attractive to phytophagous insects. The technique was demonstrated in a development and fecundity test using the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, reared on cotton seedlings, Gossypium hirsutum L., at foliar temperatures of 10.0 and 12.5°C. Root temperatures were held at 20°C. The device was also tested at a foliar temperature of 7.5°C in an additional fecundity test. In a control test, …

Aspects Of The Ecology Of The Mesopelagic Fish Gonostoma Elongatum (Gonostomatidae, Stomiiformes) In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Thomas M. Lancraft, Thomas L. Hopkins, Joseph J. Torres

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Gonostoma elongatum is an important mesopelagic fish found throughout the world at subtropical-tropical latitudes. This study examined its distribution, abundance and life history in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The species was a strong diel migrator, found from 25 to 325 m at night and from 425 to 725 m during the day with small fish occurring shallower than large fish. Numerical abundance and biomass were high, rivaling the dominant species of myctophids in the Gulf of Mexico. There no obvious seasonal fluctuations in population abundance. G. elongatum is a protandric hermaphrodite whose population breeds throughout the year and females …

Interactions Between Aquatic Chromogenic Bacteria And Pathogenic Vibrio Spp., John Louis Harris Oct 1988

Interactions Between Aquatic Chromogenic Bacteria And Pathogenic Vibrio Spp., John Louis Harris

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Interactions between populations inhabiting an ecosystem are responsible, in large part, for determining which species coexist in that ecosystem. In this study, interactions between selected Vibrio species, V. alginolyticus and V. anguillarum, and marine heterotrophic, chromogenic bacteria in aquatic microcosms were investigated. The ultimate goal of this project was to evaluate the feasibility of ex ploiting competitive interactions as a means to biologically control growth of the pathogenic marine bacteria, V. alginolyticus and V. anguillarum. In the majority of experiments (14/16), if chromogenic species were allowed to develop stable populations before a Vibrio spp. was introduced into a …
