The Influence Of Information Signs On Visitor Distribution And Use, Perry J. Brown, John D. Hunt Jan 1969

The Influence Of Information Signs On Visitor Distribution And Use, Perry J. Brown, John D. Hunt

Forest Management Faculty Publications

Lack of information is a primary factor accounting for visitors jamming recreation sites, overflowing onto highway rights-of-way and blocking facilities [5, p. 95]. In attempting to attain an even distribution of visitors, the importance of information signing as a management tool is often overlooked. Oxenfeldt indicates that advertising (information) alters behavior most efficiently when it supplies information customers are seeking [4, p. 471]. Tocher and Kearns noted in visitor characteristic studies that travelers seek different experiences when touring than when at home or work [6]. Information signs may lead the visitor to these different experiences. Hypothesizing that signs can influence …

Proteinpolysaccharides From Bovine Nasal Cartilage Interactions With Glycoproteins And The Formation Of Aggregates, Vincent C. Hascall Jr. Jan 1969

Proteinpolysaccharides From Bovine Nasal Cartilage Interactions With Glycoproteins And The Formation Of Aggregates, Vincent C. Hascall Jr.

Student Theses and Dissertations

Proteinpolysaccharides are macromolecules which consist primarily of chondroitin-4-sulfate associated with non-collagenous protein. They constitute about half of the dry weight of adult bovine nasal cartilage; the remaining material is predominantly collagen. When cartilage slices are extracted with concentrated salt solutions (typically 4 M guanidinium chloride), 85% of the total proteinpolysaccharide in the tissue is easily solubilized. The collagen framework of the tissue remains intact during the extraction procedure, and the cartilage slices retain their shapes. The amount of proteinpolysaccharide which is solubilized depends, in part, upon the ability of the extraction solvent to dissociate proteinpolysaccharide aggregates which exist in the …

Viral Inhibition Of Mammalian Cell Dna Synthesis, William D. Ensminger Jan 1969

Viral Inhibition Of Mammalian Cell Dna Synthesis, William D. Ensminger

Student Theses and Dissertations

Eukaryotic cells replicate their DNA during a defined time period in the interphase between mitoses. Non-proliferating cells are generally found to be blocked in interphase prior to the DNA-synthetic period. It therefore appears that the control of cellular proliferation may be intimately related to regulation of DNA synthesis. Defining the mechanism for the regulation of DNA replication is a central problem in the biology of higher animal cells. The introductory section of this thesis attempts to bring together the currently available evidence into a coherent model for in vivo regulated DNA replication. Animal viruses can be used as tools to …

The Control Of Spore Germination In Anemia Phyllitidis (L.) Swartz And Other Ferns, Eric S. Weinberg Jan 1969

The Control Of Spore Germination In Anemia Phyllitidis (L.) Swartz And Other Ferns, Eric S. Weinberg

Student Theses and Dissertations

Many fern spores require light for germination. In one family of ferns, the Schizaeaceae, the gibberellins overcome this light requirement and induce dark-germination. Fern gametophytes produce antheridium-inducing substances. The Anemia substance, antheridogen-B, is demonstrated to induce germination in two genera of the Schizaeaceae, Anemia and Mohria. The Pteridium substance, antheridogen-A, stimulates germination of at least ten species in two families of ferns, but is not active on species of the Schizaeaceae. In almost all tested cases the antheridogens are active in inducing germination in the same species on which they also induce antheridia. The hormone-induced dark-germination in Anemia phyllitidis (L.) …

Germinability Factors Of Field-Grown Sorghum Seed, D. B. Sauer, C. M. Christensen Jan 1969

Germinability Factors Of Field-Grown Sorghum Seed, D. B. Sauer, C. M. Christensen

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Germination of sorghum seed did not appear to be affected by spraying the plants with Maneb or with a chemical defoliant before harvest. Mechanical threshing greatly reduced germination of most but not all lots; this injury is thought to be related to the maturity and/ or moisture content of the seed when threshed, although other varietal differences may be important. At any given time there were large differences in moisture content between seeds of different hybrids, different plants of any one hybrid, and between different parts of the same panicle.

Physiological Responses To Nitrogen In Plants, Yoshio Murata Jan 1969

Physiological Responses To Nitrogen In Plants, Yoshio Murata

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Recent advances in crop physiology have given us some clues for analysis of the complex relationships of environmental factors, cultural conditions and genetic factors to crop yield. However, in order to accomplish this analysis, it is quite necessary to have concrete knowledge about the causal relationships and the time sequence of the processes of yield-formation.
In grain crops, the process of yield-formation may be divided into the following three phases:
1) Formation of organs for nutrient absorption and photosynthesis,
2) Formation of flower organs and "yield-container," and
3) Production, accumulation and translocation of "yield-contents."
The effect of nitrogen, which has …

Axenic Ovarial Explants From The Marine Nematode Deontostoma Californicum On Culture Media, D. R. Viglierchio, Armand R. Maggenti, R. N. Johnson

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The gonads of Deontostoma californicum were isolated from the organismal environment by dissection. In an attempt to approximate the in vivo condition and to maintain in vitro architecture and function ten media recommended for the culture of insect cells or organs were tested. The media were prepared in two series: one according to published recommendations and the second substituting filtered seawater for the inorganic salts and distilled water. Media were prepared as both liquid and gel (agar) with and without antibiotics. Whole animals and eggs were placed on the same culture media series as the ovarial explants. Ovarial explant reaction …

Simple Methods For Detection Of Bacteriuria In The Physician's Office, E. G. Heinze Jr., A. Hodari, T. Connolly, D. Jones, F. Cox, E. L. Quinn

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Two simplified quantitative urine culture techniques, suitable for use in the physician's office, were shown to be reliable and practical. The miniature culture method (Testuria) and flood-plate technique gave comparable quantitative results, and the latter also yielded prompt information of organism specificity which was helpful in judging the significance of the culture findings.

Biophysical And Biochemical Properties Of Salmonella Potsdam Bacteriophage P3/2, James D. Kettering Aug 1968

Biophysical And Biochemical Properties Of Salmonella Potsdam Bacteriophage P3/2, James D. Kettering

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Addition of KH2P04 salts to Fraser’s Medium produced higher titers of Salmonella potsdam bacteriophage P3/2, but it failed to maintain stable titers under normal cold storage conditions. The addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) to the medium also produced high titers and helped to maintain phage viability indefinitely in storage. The presence of KH2P04 with the EDTA did not increase the titers nor better the storage properties and was discontinued in favor of EDTA alone. This provided for the accumulation of the necessary amounts of P3/2 for DNA studies.

The phage P3/2 adapted well to purification …
