The Storage And Use Of Soil Moisture. Report Of Experimental Substation, North Platte, Nebraska, W. W. Burr
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The profitable cultivation of the non-irrigable lands in west central and western Nebraska is limited by the amount and efficient use of the precipitation. There are tracts of land in the sand hills and minor tracts of badly worn heavier soils where the need of soil fertility is becoming evident. But, in the main, the great problem at present is not one of soil fertility, but of how to get enough water to make use of the fertility now present. The rainfall of this section, which varies from an actual shortage to seldom more than a meager sufficiency, makes it …

A Working Plan For The Woodlands Of The New Haven Water Company; Prepared After Five Years Of Forest Practice, 1908 To 1912, Ralph C. Hawley
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
Soon after the establishment of the Yale Forest School in 1900, the necessity developed for finding forest lands near the city of NewHaven upon which to conduct field work. It was found that many of the most accessible and best timbered tracts were owned by the New Haven Water Company....about 250 acres near the Maltby Lakes were placed under the management of the Yale Forest School. ...a written plan is desirable. The plan is divided into two parts: the first, descriptive of present conditions and passt accomplishments; the second, treating of the policy to be pursued.

The Inheritance Of Quantitative Characters In Maize, R. A. Emerson, E. M. East
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The experiments conducted by one of the writers were begun at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station at New Haven in 1906 and removed to the Bussey Institution of Harvard University at Forest Hills, Massachusetts, in 1909. The materials employed in this study consisted principally of crosses of Tom Thumb pop with Black Mexican sweet and of Watson flint with Leaming dent. The number of rows per ear were noted in several other crosses, the parents of which are listed later in this paper. The experiments of the other writer were begun at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station at Lincoln in …

Some Of The Next Steps In Botanical Science, Charles E. Bessey
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
When one who has worked long in any
field of science speaks before an audience
such as this he is expected to say something
about the condition of his branch of science
when he began work with meager and
poorly adapted apparatus, to contrast it
with its greatly improved condition to-day,
and to dwell with pride upon the finely
equipped laboratories with costly apparatus
especially designed for particular
experiments, to be found by the twentieth
century scientific student. And 1 must
confess that the temptation to do so was
one difficult to resist, for we who have
grown old in …

Botanical Specimens (Herbarium) By Alice Ford, 1912, Alice Ford
Botanical Specimen Books
This botanical specimen book (herbarium) was collected and curated by Sara Alice Ford in spring 1912 for a Botany I course taught by John M. Holzinger at the Winona Normal School in Winona, Minnesota. These plants were collected in the Witoka area. Sara Alice Ford Einhorn (1983-1992) grew up in the Witoka Area and attended Winona Normal School, graduating in 1912. She taught in the area rural schools (Boynton and Ridgeway) before marrying Clifford Einhorn. They lived in North Minneapolis before moving back to Winona in the 1940s.

The Present Methods Of Teaching Entomology, J. H. Comstock
The Present Methods Of Teaching Entomology, J. H. Comstock
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The present methods of teaching entomology followed in the United States have been developed almost entirely by men now teaching this subject. A second generation of teachers has begun its work; but the first is still on the stage. We h3i¥e progressed far enough, however, to make it worth while for the teachers to compare methods, in order that each may profit by the experience of the others. In a conference of this kind the contribution of each to the discussion will be, naturally, at first, merely a statement of the methods evolved in our several widely separated institutions. Then …
Present Methods Of Teaching Entomology, H. T. Fernald
Present Methods Of Teaching Entomology, H. T. Fernald
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
In teaching entomology, much depends upon the ultimate aim of the student. A course in introductory entomology, whether as a required or an elective subject is sure to include many students who will not continue the subject farther. It is at least probable, that these students will form over half of the class, and accordingly, the introductory treatment should be arranged on the basis of the greatest good to the greatest number. This will usually mean some slight knowledge of insect anatomy, particularly external anatomy, and a general survey of insects as a group, with special attention to the pests …
The Present Methods Of Teaching Entomology, Herbert Osborn
The Present Methods Of Teaching Entomology, Herbert Osborn
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
In a discussion of the methods of teaching entomology, it is almost necessary to take a hasty view of the growth of the subject and of the different methods of imparting knowledge in it during the past half century. We need scarcely go back of this, because for the United States, at least, the growth of the teaching of entomology as a subject included in a college curriculum has had its growth within that time. In fact, practically all of the development of the teaching outside of two or three localities has been within the last twenty-five' years. Naturally the …

Present Methods Of Teaching Entomology At The University Of Nebraska, Lawrence Bruner
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
'When our Secretary sent out his preliminary notification of this meeting and asked me to take part in a discussion of "present methods of teaching Entomology," the matter at first seemed of little importance so far, at least, as the speaker was concerned. However, after giving the subject some thought I have decided that it might be well at least to take the time and trouble to attempt to explain briefly a few of the methods by which the student in Nebraska is enabled to absorb some entomological information. In order to do this with an unbiased feeling it might …
Discussion And Correspondence Coupling Vs. Random Segregation, R. A. Emerson
Discussion And Correspondence Coupling Vs. Random Segregation, R. A. Emerson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
To the editor of science: The suggestion offered by Morgan, in SCIENCE of September 22, to account for the coupling and repulsion of factors for various characters in inheritance in such forms as Abraxas, Drosophila, fowls, sweet peas, etc., incites this note.
Briefly Morgan's hypothesis is (1) that the materials representing factors that couple are "near together in a linear series" in the chromosomes; (2) that, when pairs of parental chromosomes conjugate, "like regions stand opposed "; (3) that "homologous chromosomes twist around each other," but that the separation of chromosomes is in a single "plane"; (4) that, thereby the …

Bulletin No. 109 - The Nitrogen And Humus Problem In Dry-Land Farming, Robert Stewart
UAES Bulletins
The effect of cultivation and the growth of crops upon the nitrogen and humus content of soils has been studied by various investigators, both in America and Europe. In general, the results of the various investigations indicate that cropping and cultivation are very destructive of the organic. matter and the nitrogen of the surface soil.

The Inheritance Of Sizes And Shapes In Plants, R. A. Emerson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Some years ago Lock reported a cross of a tall race of maize with a shorter race which produced an intermediate height in F1 and exhibited no segregation in F2 when crossed back with one of the parents. Castle's results with rabbits are very similar to those of Lock with maize. Castle summarizes his results in part as follows:
A cross between rabbits differing in ear-length produces offspring with ears of intermediate length, varying about the mean of the parental ear-lengths. . . . A study of the offspring of the primary cross-breds shows the blend of the …

Bulletin No 32 - Noxious Weeds And Poison Plants, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Bulletins 1 - 2999
Many settlers, new to this State, find some difficulty in distinguishing those vegetable pests which are classed as noxious weeds, the eradication of which is made compulsory under the Noxious Weeds Act of 1904.
In order to facilitate the ready recognition of the plants which are the least familiar, the Department of Agriculture has prepared this Bulletin, giving illustrations of the several varieties which have been gazetted as noxious. these are: - Stinkwort, Bathurst Burr, Noogoorn Burr, Nut Bramble, Spanish Radish, Prickly Pear, Apple of Sodom, sweet Briar, Wild Bramble, Star Thistle (purple), Double Gee and Water hyacinth.

Bulletin No. 106 - A Study Of The Production And Movement Of Nitric Nitrogen In An Irrigated Soil, Robert Stewart, J. E. Greaves
UAES Bulletins
The problem of maintaining the nitrogen content in our agricultural soils is one of vital importance to the development of a permanent system of agriculture. Any investigation, therefore, which tends to throw any light on the conditions which are necessary for maintaining the maximum supply of nitrogen in our soils needs no apology for its institution.

Bulletin No. 104 - The Storage Of Winter Precipitation In Soils, John A. Widtsoe
UAES Bulletins
It has been found that the production of one pound of dry plant substance on soils of average fertility, requires in humid districts not more than five hundred pounds of water, and in arid districts like Utah about seven hundred and fifty pounds. This indicates that the average rainfall of Utah, which is about twelve inches, if properly conserved in the soil, is sufficient to produce annually, without irrigation, from thirty to forty-five bushels of wheat to the acre, or corresponding yields of other crops. The realization of this truth has changed greatly our views of irrigation practices. The beginning …

What Forestry Has Done, Treadwell Cleaveland Jr.
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Many people in this country think that forestry had never been tried until the government began to practice it upon the national forests. Yet forestry is practiced by every civilized country in the world, except China and Turkey. It gets results which can be got in no other way, and which are necessary to the general welfare. Forestry is not a new thing. It was discussed two thousand years ago, and it has been studied and applied with increasing thoroughness ever since.
The principles of forestry are everywhere the same. They rest on natural laws, which are at work everywhere …
