Fisheries Report No 3 - Western Australian Freshwater Fisheries, Donald D. Francois
Fisheries Report No 3 - Western Australian Freshwater Fisheries, Donald D. Francois
Fisheries Research Reports
Most of the Australian States have a comprehensive system of inland waterways, Western Australia, however, is in a less fortunate position. True, the maps of the State show many rivers, but in much of the southern, more populous part, with no summer rain and no winter snow, the majority are virtually a chain of waterholes during the long summer months. At the same time, in a relatively small section in the south-west corner, there is a series of permanent streams flowing through what was originally dense forest. But apart from the three indigenous freshwater crustaceans, the marron (Cherax tenuimanus), the …

The Luminometer: A Sensitive Instrument For Measuring Low Amounts Of Oxygen, And Some Applications To Problems Involving The Measurement Of Photosynthesis, Arthur H. Burr Jr.
Student Theses and Dissertations
A new method for the continuous measurement of low rates of oxygen production is described, which is useful for the study of photosynthetic systems. An inert carrier gas flows at a controlled rate through a cuvette, then over a solution of luminol and potassium t-butoxide in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The light generated by the chemiluminescent reaction of luminol with oxygen is measured with a photomultiplier. A constant rate of oxygen production by photosynthesis in the cuvette is seen as a constant displacement from a steady baseline. The baseline is caused by the oxygen impurity in the carrier gas. Electrolysis of water …
Studies On Selection In Natural And Experimental Populations Of Drosophila Pseudoobscura, Wyatt W. Anderson
Studies On Selection In Natural And Experimental Populations Of Drosophila Pseudoobscura, Wyatt W. Anderson
Student Theses and Dissertations
Two genetic characters in Drosophila pseudoobscura were utilized in an investigation of some of the genetic mechanisms in evolution. The characters are (1) body size, which is a continuously-varying, polygenic trait, and (2) the arrangement of genes along the third chromosome, which is a Mendelizing, discrete trait. Collections of Drosophila pseudoobscura were taken in many localities in the American West. The two characters vary regularly with the physiographic division of the West. This variation is evidence that the frequencies of the genes controlling each character are strongly regulated by selection; such variation is the first stage in the genetic divergence …
Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre
Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ONE of the problems of intensive houses for pigs is the disposal of the dung and urine.
If proper arrangements are not made to remove this, it soon accumulates in an offensive pile at one end of the piggery, making an excellent breeding ground for flies.
Egg Shell Quality, R J. Bishop
Egg Shell Quality, R J. Bishop
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Recent overseas work and local industry developments indicate that the calcium content of feed for laying hens in Western Australia should be increased to achieve satisfactory egg shell strength.
Age, temperature and breeding are other important influences on egg shell quality.

Cultivation : Does Haste Mean Waste?, H M. Fisher
Cultivation : Does Haste Mean Waste?, H M. Fisher
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Many farmers believe that increasing the speed of cultivation and seeding implements will cause deterioration of soils and reduced crop yields.
In a three-year trial on clover ley land at Wongan Hills higher cultivation speeds tended to increase rather than decrease wheat yields. There was some deterioration in the physical structure of the soil.

Ultrasonic Tracking Of Migratory Fishes With An Internal Tag, Ross M. Horrall, H. F. Henderson, A. D. Hasler
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
First paragraph:
A small ultrasonic tag, 9 mm by 40 mm in size, has been developed by members of the fish orientation group at the University of Wisconsin. The tag emits a continuous signal at approximately 65 kc/sec. The signal is received via a directional hydrophone and a high quality communications receiver. Tracking ranges of up to 1 km have been obtained. The placement of the tag is internal: either into the stomach or into the body cavity of the fish. The tags and tracking equipment have been successfully employed in studies on the open water movements and orientation of …

The Ultraviolet Induction Properties Of Artificially Lysogenized Strains Of Salmonella Potsdam, Roy E. Olson
The Ultraviolet Induction Properties Of Artificially Lysogenized Strains Of Salmonella Potsdam, Roy E. Olson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
By infection of the non-lysogenic strain of S. potsdam, SP2, with the phages P9a/2 and P9/c three artificially lysogenized strains were isolated: SP2-9a, SP2-9c, and SP2-9ca. SP2 lysogenized with P9a could not further be lysogenized with P9c.
There was evidence from the induction data that the presence of P9c influenced the induction of phage P9a, although P9a did not appear to influence the induction of P9c. Much greater levels of free phage P9a were achieved in induced cultures of SP2-9ca than in induced cultures of SP2-9a.
There were marked differences in induction of both phages P9a and P9c between …
The Role Of Thiamine Pyrophosphate In Regulating The Level Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Central Nervous System, Bryant L. Adams
The Role Of Thiamine Pyrophosphate In Regulating The Level Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Central Nervous System, Bryant L. Adams
Theses and Dissertations
The level of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brains of white rats suffering from thiamine deficiency symptoms resulting from pyrithiamine or oxythiamine antagonism of thiamine or from thiamine deprivation was measured. The level of this amino acid was 17.5% lower in the brains of pyrithiamine-treated rats and 20.0% lower in the brains of thiamine-deprived rats than in the control rats. Daily injections of ten times the required amounts of vitamin B6 in rats treated with pyrithiamine or oxythiamine or by thiamine deprivation had no effect on the level of brain gamma-aminobutyric acid or on the psiological behavior of these rats. The …

Studies Of Rat Brain Thiamine Pyrophosphokinase, Lavell Rolfson Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The enzyme ATP:thiamine pyrophosphotransferase (thiamine pyrophosphokinaseJ was purified from acetone powders which were prepared from rat brains up to the chromatography on alumina C_γ step by a modified procedure that Mano (Y. Mano, J. Biochem., 42, 283 (1960)] developed for the purification of the rat liver thiamine pyrophosphokinase. The enzyme was purified 12 fold over that in the original extract of the acetone powder. A spectrophotometric assay for the brain thiamine pyrophosphokinase was developed utilizing brewer's yeast apotransketolase. The transketolase assay was able to detect less than 10^-11 moles of thiamine diphosphate, which was synthesized by the kinase, in the …

Water Chemistry Survey Of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead, P. R. Tramutt, Bureau Of Reclamation
Water Chemistry Survey Of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead, P. R. Tramutt, Bureau Of Reclamation
Publications (WR)
The survey results indicate that the impoundment of water behind Hoover Dam has not adversely affected the dissolved oxygen (DO) content and that water quality and DO content were uniform regardless of depth. The study made in April-May 1964 will provide water quality data of Lake Mead prior to releases from Lake Powell as a basis for evaluating Lake Powell's effect on water quality and limnology of Lake Mead. The performance of a DO analyzer was tested and found unsatisfactory at depths below 150 ft. Parameters tested by standard chemical analyses of water samples in the Denver Laboratory and by …
