The Effect Of Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Donald F. Adams Jun 1967

The Effect Of Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Donald F. Adams

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Samples of blood were obtained from thirty healthy young adult males (Loma Linda University School of Dentistry), and contaminated with bacteria. Varying concentrations of pure glucose were added to this mixture to observe the effect of the glucose on in vitro neutrophilic phagocytosis. As the glucose levels increased a statistically significant suppression was noted in the ability of the neutrophilic leukocytes to engulf Staphylococcus epidermidis.

It was not possible, however, to predict the degree of suppression for any particular level of glucose added nor is it possible to state that suppression will occur in any one individual.

Two methods of …

Carbon Dioxide Fixation In Schistosoma Mansoni, Clint Earl Carter

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Adults of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni were perfused from the hepatic portal system of CF1 female mice sixty to seventy days post infection. The worms were then incubated in Eagle’s minimal essential medium with glutamate and 0.03 mg/100 ml of nonlabelled aspartic acid. To this medium was added 10 μc of either NaH1403, glucose-UC14 or aspartate-4-C14. The worms were found to fix carbon from the NaH1403 and to incorporate the glucose and aspartate. The amount of activity recovered in five different chemical fractions after two hours incubation was determined …

Estimation Of Incoming Radiation From Extraterrestrial Radiation And Climatic Data, Rodrigo H. Pizarro May 1967

Estimation Of Incoming Radiation From Extraterrestrial Radiation And Climatic Data, Rodrigo H. Pizarro

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Average monthly values of incoming radiation, extraterrestrial radiation, sunshine, and sky cover frorn 32 climatological stations in the United States were used as a basis to develop radiation equations.

Empirical relations between incoming radiation and more commonly available climatic and geographic variables, such as percent of relative sunshine, mean daily sky cover, station elevation and extraterrestrial radiation, were established using an empirical procedure used by Christiansen (1966, 1967) to compute his evaporation and evapotranspiration formulas.

The reliability of the equations developed was deternlined by comparing the computed values of incoming radiation with measured values at Davis, California and for the …

An Investigation Of Methods For Estimating Marginal Values Of Irrigation Water, Richard L. Johnson May 1967

An Investigation Of Methods For Estimating Marginal Values Of Irrigation Water, Richard L. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Marginal values of water used in irrigation are needed if water is to be optimally allocated among alternative uses. Cobb-Douglas production function analysis and linear programming methods were studied in this investigation to find their fruit-fulness in predicting these marginal values. The theoretical properties of both methods indicate that they are conceptually capable of yielding valid marginal value estimates for irrigation water.

Further investigation of the two methods was carried out as an empirical test in the Milford area of Utah. Marginal values of water used for irrigation in that area were estimated by both procedures. Although inviolable criteria for …

The Free Sterol Content Of Selected Clones Of Alfalfa As Related To Seed Infestation By The Alfalfa Seed Chalcid, Rex Alton Richards May 1967

The Free Sterol Content Of Selected Clones Of Alfalfa As Related To Seed Infestation By The Alfalfa Seed Chalcid, Rex Alton Richards

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The infestation of twelve selected clones of alfalfa by the alfalfa seed chalcid was measured. The free sterol content of the stems, leaves, flowers and pods of these clones was determined. A check was made to see if there was a correlation between the sterol content and the chalcid infestation.

Differences were found among the clones in the sterol content for each plant part. There were also significant differences in percent chalcid infestation in the 12 clones. Duncan's New Multiple Range Test pointed out which clones differed Significantly from the others.

Using linear regression analysis, the correlation coefficient of the …

The Moose In Northeastern Minnesota, Patrick D. Karns Jan 1967

The Moose In Northeastern Minnesota, Patrick D. Karns

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The succession of dominant cervids in northeastern Minnesota since settlement has passed from moose and woodland caribou to moose lo white-tailed deer and is now returning to moose. Results of recent studies show high moose densities in some areas are leading lo range deterioration and reduced net productivity. Pneumostrongylus tenuis, a common parasite of white-tailed deer but fatal to moose, is the etiological agent of moose disease. With increases in deer density, such as occurred in the 1920's and 30's, the reports of this disease in moose became more prevalent. Presently, where moose occur on the high deer density areas …

A Pharmacological Analysis Of The Ionic Channels Of Nerve, Bertil Hille Jan 1967

A Pharmacological Analysis Of The Ionic Channels Of Nerve, Bertil Hille

Student Theses and Dissertations

The effects of various drugs on single myelinated nerve fibers from Rana pipiens were studied with the voltage clamp technique of Frankenhaeuser and Dodge. The observed currents were analysed by a computer in terms of the mathematical model of Hodgkin and Huxley. The sodium, the potassium, and the leakage current components and the time constants associated with their changes were calculated. Tetrodotoxin abolished the sodium currents selectively, and tetraethylammonium ion abolished the potassium currents selectively. Neither of these drugs affected the time constants associated with any of the current components. The curves relating the kinetic parameters of the sodium currents …
