External Development Affecting the National Parks: Preserving "The Best Idea We Ever Had" (September 14-16)

Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Daniel Magraw.

The conference will be held at the Aspen Lodge, adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado.

It was Wallace Stegner who called the national parks "the best idea we ever had." The continuing increases in usage attest to their popularity. National parks are created to preserve areas of special scenic and cultural value for enjoyment and use. Managing the parks in a manner that protects the important values and purposes for which they were created presents important and difficult …

Otoconia As Test Masses In Biological Accelerometers: What Can We Learn About Their Formation From Evolutionary Studies And From Work In Microgravity?, Muriel D. Ross, Kathleen M. Donovan Sep 1986

Otoconia As Test Masses In Biological Accelerometers: What Can We Learn About Their Formation From Evolutionary Studies And From Work In Microgravity?, Muriel D. Ross, Kathleen M. Donovan

Scanning Electron Microscopy

This paper reviews previous findings and introduces new material about otolith end organs that help us to understand their functioning and development. In particular, we consider the end organs as biological accelerometers. The otoconia are dealt with as test masses whose substructure and evolutionary trend toward calcite may prove significant in understanding formation requirements. Space-flight helps illuminate the influence of gravity, while right-left asymmetry is suggested by study of certain rat strains.

Effects Of Corn Oil And Benzyl Acetate On Number And Size Of Azaserine-Induced Foci In The Pancreas Of Lew And F344 Rats, Daniel S. Longnecker, B D. Roebuck, Thomas J. Curphey, Evelyne Lhoste, Charles I. Coon, Denise Macmillan

Dartmouth Scholarship

The response of LEW and F344 strain rats to the pancreatic carcinogen azaserine was compared using the size and number of azaserine-induced acidophilic acinar cell foci and nodules as parameters in a 4-month experiment. A second experiment compared the effect of corn oil intake by gavage and dietary routes on the growth of azaserine-induced pancreatic lesions in LEW rats. A third experiment tested the activity of benzyl acetate in regard to its ability to induce acinar cell foci or to promote the growth of such foci in azaserine-treated rats. The results showed that equivalent doses of azaserine induce two to …

The Effect Of Dietary Fat Level On Tumor Development And Immunity In Balb/C Mice Fed Casein Of Wheat Gluten As Protein And Challenged With Herpes Type 2-Transformed Cells, Helen Drakou Sep 1986

The Effect Of Dietary Fat Level On Tumor Development And Immunity In Balb/C Mice Fed Casein Of Wheat Gluten As Protein And Challenged With Herpes Type 2-Transformed Cells, Helen Drakou

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A high percentage of fat in the diet has been implicated through epidemiological studies in several human cancers. Studies in experimental animals have produced evidence that increasing the fat in the diet decreases the animal’s ability to restrict tumor development and growth. In previous work done in this laboratory with BALB/c mice injected with herpes simplex Type 2-transformed mouse cells (H238), the effects of a diet which greatly enhanced tumor growth was compared with one which restricted tumor growth. The latter, a low (5%) fat, low protein diet, in which the protein was casein, was also found to produce a …

Investigation Of Water-Binding Properties Of Industrial Sludges Using Thermal Analysis As A Monitoring Tool, Ron Josephson Aug 1986

Investigation Of Water-Binding Properties Of Industrial Sludges Using Thermal Analysis As A Monitoring Tool, Ron Josephson

Theses

As part of a program to develop new and more cost-effective dewatering approaches for industrial hazardous wastes, sludges and synthetic "model" materials were analyzed by thermal methods in an attempt to comprehend their water-binding qualities and differentiate free and bound water. These thermal methods included Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Industrial sludges and laboratory models were compared using both standard heating techniques and subambient cooling (to -60°C). This latter technique provides direct indication of the amount of free water. This information can be very useful in evaluating and improving dewatering techniques for industrial …

The Biomineralization In Social Wasps (Vespinae): The Presence Of Statoliths, J. S. Ishay, T. Shimony, L. Arcan Aug 1986

The Biomineralization In Social Wasps (Vespinae): The Presence Of Statoliths, J. S. Ishay, T. Shimony, L. Arcan

Scanning Electron Microscopy

In social wasps granular aggregates occur mainly in the head region and the body integument. In the former location they are present both on the outer and inner side of the frons. On the outer side of the frons, in a groove traversing its center, there is a deep pit surrounded by a membrane which forms a cyst-like sac. In the pit of the hornet Vespa orientalis (Linne, 1771), there are aggregates comprising silicon (Sl), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and iron (Fe), which are arranged in morula-like fashion. A granular material is secreted at the base of sensory hairs …

Effects Of Acid Ph On Embryonic And Juvenile Freshwater Fish, Barbara A. Ramey, Lee E. Colton Aug 1986

Effects Of Acid Ph On Embryonic And Juvenile Freshwater Fish, Barbara A. Ramey, Lee E. Colton

KWRRI Research Reports

The effects of sulfuric acid on embryos, larvae, and juvenile fish were examined using standard bioassay techniques, as well as in a preference/ avoidance behavioral test. The objectives were to compare the sensitivities of the various ages of fish to acid and to assess the use of the behavioral test in a hazard assessment program. In an 8-day static renewal bioassay, embryos and larvae of the fathead minnow were not affected at a pH of 4.92 and above, but pH 3.57 produced complete mortality prior to hatching. In 96- hr acute bioassays, 8-wk juvenile fathead minnows survived 100% at pH's …

A Semiquantitative Analysis Of The Chorda Tympani Taste Pathway In The Rat Brain With The 2-Deoxyglucose Method, Charles L. Hardison Aug 1986

A Semiquantitative Analysis Of The Chorda Tympani Taste Pathway In The Rat Brain With The 2-Deoxyglucose Method, Charles L. Hardison

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis is based on a semiquantitative analysis of four nuclear relay centers [nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), parabrachial nucleus (PBN), ventroposteromedial nucleus (VPM), gustatory neocortex (GNC)] in the chorda tympani nerve pathway. Metabolic changes were examined by the 2-deoxyglucose method in which one chorda tympani nerve was chemically stimulated and its contralateral side lesioned. Coronal sections of four taste centers were prepared for autoradiography and Nissl staining. Densities of the autoradiograms were determined by means of a video based image processor. Relative differences in the optical density ratios of the stimulated versus lesioned nuclear grey matter areas to white matter …

A Finite Element Method For The Computation Of Magnetic Electron Lenses, Bohumila Lencová, Michal Lenc Jul 1986

A Finite Element Method For The Computation Of Magnetic Electron Lenses, Bohumila Lencová, Michal Lenc

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The success of computer-aided design in electron optics is no longer limited by computing facilities but by our understanding of numerical methods and underlying physical laws used for the computation. This paper deals mainly with the computation of vector potential in rotationally symmetric magnetic lenses. The finite element method, as introduced by Munro in 1971, seems to be the best tool for this purpose, and we aim to show in this paper how it is possible to improve it without losing the original clarity. Therefore we discuss the suitable choice of mesh and the calculation of the coefficients of the …

Gene And Teratogen Induced Defects Of Early Central Nervous System Development, K. S. O'Shea Jul 1986

Gene And Teratogen Induced Defects Of Early Central Nervous System Development, K. S. O'Shea

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The events involved in the histogenesis of the primitive nervous system involve precise control over cell shape changes, cellular migrations, cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. The coordinated procession of these events results in the elevation of the neural folds, and their apposition and fusion in the dorsal midline, forming the primary neural tube. This is followed by a second series of cellular migrations and rearrangements (collectively called secondary neurulation) which result in lengthening of the caudal neural tube. After a brief consideration of the mechanisms involved in neurulation, the effects of gene or teratogen induced perturbations of these events are …

Theoretical Considerations On The Effect Of Ion Formation Conditions On The Transmission Through A Laser Microprobe Mass Analyzer, M. De Wolf, T. Mauney, E. Michiels, R. Gijbels Jul 1986

Theoretical Considerations On The Effect Of Ion Formation Conditions On The Transmission Through A Laser Microprobe Mass Analyzer, M. De Wolf, T. Mauney, E. Michiels, R. Gijbels

Scanning Electron Microscopy

A theoretical study on the ion transmission through the laser microprobe mass analyzer LAMMA 500 was made using ray-tracing computer programs. The calculations reveal that the ion transmission is strongly affected by the initial conditions of ion formation. Chromatic and spherical aberrations give rise to considerable discrimination in the univoltage lens.

A correlation is attempted between measured and theoretical transmission curves. For the latter a physically plausible plasma model was initially assumed to generate the input parameters, i.e., locus of ion formation and angular and energy distributions of the ions (atomic and cluster ions).

The model needs correction for aberration …

Abatement Of Nitrate Pollution In Groundwater And Surface Runoff From Cropland Using Legume Cover Crops With No-Till Corn, M. Scott Smith, Jac J. Varco Jul 1986

Abatement Of Nitrate Pollution In Groundwater And Surface Runoff From Cropland Using Legume Cover Crops With No-Till Corn, M. Scott Smith, Jac J. Varco

KWRRI Research Reports

Agricultural practices can have a significant impact on water quality. The effects of leguminous winter cover crops on leaching of NO-3; from soil have been investigated in this project. Legume cover crops, by fixation of atmospheric N, can reduce the amount of fertilizer N required to produce summer grain crops. The methods initially used to evaluate cover crop effects on No; transport included suction probe lysimeters and measurement of NO-3; in soil samples collected to a depth of 90 cm. These measurements demonstrated extreme spatial variability in NO-3; distribution and water …

Environmental Factors Affecting Nocturnal Migrations Of Macrobenthos, C. Timothy Morris

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Nocturnally dispersing macrobenthic invertebrates of the Lafayette River, Norfolk, Virginia were collected from September 4 to October 4, 1982 to determine environmental factors affecting migrations. A total of 55 taxa were identified from 325 surface and bottom nocturnal plankton tows. Peracaridan crustaceans were the dominant (99.0% of the total density) group collected. Six of the commonly collected species showed a significant (P

A Histological Investigation Of The Larval Mandibular Organ In The Mud Crab Rhithropanopeus Harrisii (Gould) (Crustacea Decapoda Xanthidae), Lore Lynn Hantske Jul 1986

A Histological Investigation Of The Larval Mandibular Organ In The Mud Crab Rhithropanopeus Harrisii (Gould) (Crustacea Decapoda Xanthidae), Lore Lynn Hantske

OES Theses and Dissertations

Mandibular organs of the mud crab, Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) were histologically located and followed throughout the larval cycle to determine their role in metamorphosis. Specimens from each day of the four larval stages and the megalopa stage were embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 8 μm, stained and observed under the microscope for the mandibular organs. The organs were located in the mandibular area of second, third and fourth stage larvae. The organs were probably present in the first stage zoeae and in the megalopa stage, although the

techniques of the study were not sensitive enough to observe them. The …
