In the heart, depolarization during the action potential activates voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels that mediate a small, localized Ca2+ influx (ICa). This small Ca2+ signal activates specialized Ca2+ release channels, the ryanodine receptors (RyRs), in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). This process is called Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR). Intuitively, the CICR process should be self-regenerating because the Ca2+ released from the SR should feedback and activate further SR Ca2+ release. However, the CICR process is precisely controlled in the heart and, consequently, some sort of negative control mechanism(s) must exist to …
A Technical Characterization Of Estuarine And Coastal New Hampshire, New Hampshire Estuaries Project, Stephen H. Jones
A Technical Characterization Of Estuarine And Coastal New Hampshire, New Hampshire Estuaries Project, Stephen H. Jones
PREP Reports & Publications
This technical characterization report provides a comprehensive compilation of information on key issues related to water quality and natural resources in the estuaries of New Hampshire. The report has identified some significant issues and problems facing these estuaries that will require management attention. Issues common to estuaries across the nation have been addressed to varying extents, depending on their significance in New Hampshire. Much of the trend information is biased by the sporadic interest given to the different resources and water quality issues through the years. Studies have focused to differing extents on the various areas of the coast, providing …

Although Caenorhabditis elegans was chosen and modified to be an organism that would facilitate a reductionist program for neurogenetics, recent research has provided evidence for properties that are emergent from the neurons. While neurogenetic advances have been made using C. elegans which may be useful in explaining human neurobiology, there are severe limitations on C. elegans to explain any significant human behavior.
Diet, Health Practices, And Variables Associated With Breastfeeding In Caucasian And Asian Participants In The Special Supplemental Food Program For Women, Infants, And Children: A Comparative Study, Rebecca E. Blaine
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The United States Department of Health and Human Services wrote Healthy People 2000 National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives. One major goal is to reduce the mortality rate for infants by reducing low birthweight. The disparities have been great when goals and objectives are applied to poor and minority populations.
Objectives have been set to reduce risk factors associated with low infant birthweight. These include addressing inappropriate health practices, and appropriate nutrition for mother and infant.
Forty-eight Asian and 50 Caucasian participants were compared for maternal diet, health practices, breastfeeding initiation and duration, and infant growth parameters. Data were …

Faunal Diversity Among Avian Parasite Assemblages: The Interaction Of History, Ecology, And Biogeography In Marine Systems, Eric P. Hoberg
Faunal Diversity Among Avian Parasite Assemblages: The Interaction Of History, Ecology, And Biogeography In Marine Systems, Eric P. Hoberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Systematics and parasite biodiversity provide power and predictability in broad studies of history, ecology and biogeography in marine systems. Parasitic helminths are elegant markers of contemporary and historical ecological relationships, geographic distribution and host-phylogeny. Complex life cycles of helminths are strongly correlated with intricate food-webs. Dependence on a series of intermediate, paratenic, and definitive hosts indicates that each parasite species represents an array of organisms within a community and tracks broadly and predictably across many trophic levels. Host and geographic ranges of parasites are historically constrained by genealogical and ecological associations, and these determinents interact resulting in characteristic parasite community …
Microevolution And The Genetic Structure Of Parasite Populations, Steven A. Nadler
Microevolution And The Genetic Structure Of Parasite Populations, Steven A. Nadler
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The development of polymerase chain reaction-based methods for assessing the genotypes of small individual organisms will promote groundbreaking investigations of the genetic architecture of parasite populations. Both quantitative genetic models and general knowledge of parasite natural history are useful for making general predictions about the distribution of genetic variation over geographic space. However, designing experimental studies to assess relationships between specific life history variables and patterns of genetic structure in natural populations will be challenging. Traditional biochemical-genetic methods have already been used to study a limited number of parasite populations, and inferred patterns of genetic structure are distinctly different between …
The Impact Of Nutrition Education On Dietary Behavior And Iron Status In Participants Of The Supplemental Food Program For Women, Infants And Children, And The Expanded Food And Nutrition Education Program, Nedra K. Christensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was conducted to determine the impact of nutrition education on participants of the Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). The specific objectives were to: 1) determine the impact of participation in EFNEP on iron status as assessed by hematocrit (hct) and ferritin levels; 2) determine the effect of nutrition knowledge on hct and ferritin values; and 3) determine the effect dietary behavior has on hct and ferritin levels for both WIC and EFNEP participants.
Each study participant completed a 24-hour dietary recall record plus food frequency …

The Fascinating History Of The Early Botanical Exploration And Investigations In Southern California, Mildred E. Mathias
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Information on plant collectors in southern California is scattered through a number of publications, some of them obscure or not well known to botanists. This paper gives a selective account of major collectors from 1793 to 1930. The appendix lists the plant collectors with references to biographical material concerning each. It is hoped that this preliminary account will stimulate further historical studies.
The Dynamics Of Animal Distribution: An Evolutionary/Ecological Model, Charles H. Smith
The Dynamics Of Animal Distribution: An Evolutionary/Ecological Model, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Investigators have sometimes assumed that the factors underlying animal distribution are too complex to lend themselves to normative modelling. In this work, a model of environment and community interaction is constructed which lends itself to the latter kind of interpretation. It is posed that spatially-varying rates and magnitudes of availability of moisture at given locations act as stresses on the nature of community infrastructure, and secondarily on the rates at which new populations may become integrated into these. Populations are thereby viewed as tending to change range in common directions, though at overall rates remaining peculiar to each. This interpretation …
Nest Success And Nesting Habits Of Eastern Kingbirds And Other Flycatchers, Michael T. Murphy
Nest Success And Nesting Habits Of Eastern Kingbirds And Other Flycatchers, Michael T. Murphy
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Patterns of nest placement and its relationship to nest success in the Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus) were studied in populations breeding in New York and Kansas. Data were augmented with information on nest placement in other open-nesting tyrannids in order to examine the hypothesis that these flycatchers place their nests chiefly so as to conceal them from predators. Nesting success was significantly greater in New York than in Kansas but was relatively high in both populations, as is apparently true of North American breeding flycatchers in general. Geographic variation in nest placement in the Eastern Kingbird was relatively small and …

Economics Of Land Use Planning: A Case Study Of Annexation In Heber Valley, Utah, Lyle C. Summers
Economics Of Land Use Planning: A Case Study Of Annexation In Heber Valley, Utah, Lyle C. Summers
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Some theories and methodologies applicable to land use planning problems were reviewed along with the history of land use and land use legislation in the United States and Utah. This review served to point out that federal land use policy is moving away from the incentive approach to controlling land use and toward a more mandatory approach aimed at giving increased emphasis to environmental quality and less to economic efficiency.
A model for conceptualizing and analyzing annexation problems was developed and applied to a problem in Heber City, Wasatch County, Utah. The analysis demonstrated that annexation is feasible by showing …
Digenetic Trematodes In Cephalopods, Robin M. Overstreet, F. G. Hochsberg
Digenetic Trematodes In Cephalopods, Robin M. Overstreet, F. G. Hochsberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
In addition to listing digenetic trematodes found in cephalopods, we provide descriptions of adults of Derogenes varicus and larvae of Lecithochirium microstomum, Lecithochirium sp., Elytrophallus sp., Monilicaecum sp., and Stephanochasmus sp. Only the first had been described previously from cephalopods, and the last represents the first record of a nonpiscine second intermediate host for a species of Stephanochasmus. We found 15 species infected, which brings to nearly 30 the total number of squids, octopods, and cuttlefish reported to be infected with Digenea. Many early records of trematodes in cephalopods are actually reports of Monogenea, Cestoda, or reproductive organs …

Notes On Eriogonum - Vi : A Revision Of The Eriogonum Microthecum Complex (Polygonaceae), James L. Reveal
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
This revision discusses seven closely related species of Eriogonum (Polygonaceae) found in the western United States of North America. One of the two major species, E. microthecum, is composed of nine varieties which range over a wide area of the Far West. The other major species, E. effusum, is found over a more restrictive geographical range mainly east of the Continental Divide. The remaining five species are primarily restricted to the Colorado-Green river drainage basin of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and northern Arizona. Together these entities form the core of a group of plants known as Section Corymbosa. …
The Importance Of Farm Management In The Under-Developed Economics, Hardev Singh Dhaliwal
The Importance Of Farm Management In The Under-Developed Economics, Hardev Singh Dhaliwal
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Throughout the history of mankind there always have been famines, disease, and poverty in some parts of the world, and this has been because of economic under - development to a great extent. For nearly a century after the publication of Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" in 1776, economic development was the main interest of economists . In the late nineteenth century, Europe, America, and Australia were developing rapidly and few people were interested in raising the incomes of Africans, Arabs, and Asians . Most of the countries in Africa and Asia were under European colonial rule, and being so, …
Second Bibliography And Index For The Philosophy Of Geology, Claude C. Albritton Jr.
Second Bibliography And Index For The Philosophy Of Geology, Claude C. Albritton Jr.
Journal of the Graduate Research Center
The body of writings on the philosophy and history of geology has grown in a remarkable way since the end of the Second World War. There is no obvious explanation for this quickening of interest in what are surely the most academic aspects of a science best known for its practical applications. Influences arising both from within and from outside the geological profession have probably been responsible. It is a matter of record that many departments of geology, upon resuming full-time operations after the war, decided not to go on moving in the old curricular ruts. The new courses, even …
Estimating Commercial Expansion From Irrigation Development In The Oahe Unit, John Thompson, Ottar Nervik
Estimating Commercial Expansion From Irrigation Development In The Oahe Unit, John Thompson, Ottar Nervik
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
Commercial activity in an economy that is predominantly agricultural is very sensitive to changes in fanning conditions. It is generally agreed by businessmen in agricultural areas that the success of their business operation is largely dependent upon the number and prosperity of farmers in their trade areas. For this reason business men often encourage proposals to increase the number of farms in their trade areas and support measures designed to improve the economic position of farmers. In South Dakota, where rainfall is considered a limiting factor in agricultural production, considerable interest has been taken in irrigation as a, means for …
William D. Moore (1824-96), Amateur Geologist Of Mississippi, S. W. Geiser
William D. Moore (1824-96), Amateur Geologist Of Mississippi, S. W. Geiser
Field and Laboratory
It is now nearly ninety years since William D. Moore, then professor of English at the University of Mississippi, collaborated with Eugene W. Hilgard on his famous geological report of that State. The archivists and historians have lost Moore from their records (if, indeed, they ever sought seriously for information of him), so that what was written five years ago of W. D. Moore (in another connection) remains as true as it was then: "No record of whence he came, or whither went (when the University closed in 1861), is to be found at the University." Since the present writer …

A Supplementary Gazetteer Of Texas, 1875-1895, Bessie Teeple Geiser
Field and Laboratory
(With a Foreword by Dr. L. H. Shinners) The present list of early towns of Texas, in existence during the years 1875 to 1895, is supplementary to the extended one given in the current issue of The Texas Almanac. It is designed particularly for the use of botanical taxonomists, who from time to time encounter on herbarium sheets localities which cannot be found in any of the standard gazetteers…
The First Texas Academy Of Science, S. W. Geiser
The First Texas Academy Of Science, S. W. Geiser
Field and Laboratory
Lack of an historical sense is the bane of many workers in the domain of Science…. The matter of the Texas Academy of Science is another illustration in point. This was organized in 1892 (as we at the present know it) at the University of Texas, and continued active for twenty years (until 1912), having in the meantime published twelve volumes of Transactions. It then ceased its activities and became extinct (like the Texas State Horticultural Society, which existed from 1875 to 1922.) In 1929, the present Texas State Academy of Science was reorganized by five men, and has continued …
A Historical Study Of The Development Of The Embryo In The Germinating Tubers Of Nephrolepis Cordifolia, Baker, Verne Schwalbach
A Historical Study Of The Development Of The Embryo In The Germinating Tubers Of Nephrolepis Cordifolia, Baker, Verne Schwalbach
Bachelors’ Theses
The tubers of Nephrolepis cordifolia.- Baker were first reported and studied by Professor Heinricher (1881). His work with the tubers was concerned with what he termed regeneration. However, this term, regeneration, was found to have the same connotation as the term germination and the two were used interchangeably throughout his work.
