Malnutrition and health issues remain persistent global crises, with developing regions bearing the brunt of the burden. According to the World Health Organization, nearly half of under-five deaths in low-and middle-income countries are linked to malnutrition, while stunting, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies impair the development of millions of children annually. The studies in this special issue focus on countries facing distinct yet interconnected challenges: Sub-Saharan African nations grapple with high rates of stunting and maternal high-risk fertility behaviors; China confronts rural-urban disparities in dietary diversity and grandparenting practices; Colombia struggles with intersectional inequalities driving infant mortality; and Zambia faces unique …

Association Between A Lifestyle Medicine Score And Stroke In U.S. Adults With Hyperglycemia: 2007- 2010 Nhanes, Swarnima Naithani
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between glycemic control and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is well- established, however, lifestyle modifications to prevent CVD warrant further investigation. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between adherence to the six lifestyle medicine pillars promoted by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and stroke in U.S. adults with hyperglycemia. A lifestyle medicine composite score (LMS) was developed to quantify adherence with the hypothesis that a higher LMS (greater adherence to lifestyle recommendations) correlates with lower odds of stroke in adults with hyperglycemia. Methods: The study sample (n=2,079) included adult (≥ 40 years of age) participants in the …
A Polyphasic Investigation Of Terrestrial Green Algal Diversity Of Biological Soil Crusts From The California Channel Islands, Emily Masluk
A Polyphasic Investigation Of Terrestrial Green Algal Diversity Of Biological Soil Crusts From The California Channel Islands, Emily Masluk
Masters Theses
Biological soil crusts (BSCs) in arid and semiarid environments support diverse microbial communities that contribute to soil stabilization, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem resilience. Among these organisms, terrestrial green algae are taxonomically challenging due to their simple morphology, phenotypic plasticity, and lack of diagnostic life history traits. This study investigated the diversity and taxonomy of green algae from BSCs collected on San Nicolas Island, San Clemente Island, and Santa Barbara Island using the polyphasic approach integrating morphology, phylogenetic analyses, molecular analyses, and ecological data. A total of 198 strains were isolated, of which 79 green algal strains underwent molecular analysis using …

Differing Circulating Microrna Profiles Of Long-Lived Polish Populations, Fabrizzio Lijeron-Herrera
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Exceptional longevity, defined as a lower biological age relative to chronological age and maintenance of functional capacity or a slowing of functional decline, is a phenotype most readily observed in centenarians and nonagenarians. These individuals exhibit a phenomenon known as compressed morbidity, spending substantially less time in poor health compared to younger elderly populations, thus representing a unique human model of delayed aging. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs), potent post-transcriptional regulators of molecular pathways, have emerged as important modulators of aging-related pathways; however, no study has comprehensively profiled miRNAs from serum in long-lived individuals from Central Europe. In particular, Polish populations present …

Motivation There is growing interest in estimating population reference ranges across age and sex to better identify atypical clinically-relevant measurements throughout the lifespan. For this task, the World Health Organization recommends using Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS), which can model non-linear growth trajectories under complex distributions that address the heterogeneity in human populations. Fitting GAMLSS models requires large, generalizable sample sizes, especially for accurate estimation of extreme quantiles, but obtaining such multi-site data can be challenging due to privacy concerns and practical considerations. In settings where patient data cannot be shared, privacy-preserving distributed algorithms for federated …

Perceived Barriers To Physical Activity And Campus Recreation Facility Usage In College Students Referred Or Not Referred To An Exercise Is Medicine® On Campus Program, Benjamin M. Colbert
Theses and Dissertations
INTRODUCTION: Approximately 36-50% of college students are inactive and report numerous barriers to being physically active. Physical activity (PA) barriers are any obstacle an individual believes affects their PA participation. Individuals who perceive more barriers are less likely to participate in PA and as such, interventions that target barriers may increase PA participation. Exercise is Medicine® on Campus (EIM-OC) is one intervention that may improve PA levels on college campuses by reducing barriers. The purpose of this study was to document PA and campus recreation facility barriers in university students and examine the influence of an individualized EIM-OC intervention …
Menstrual Cycle Phase Effects On Alcohol-Impaired Driving Performance And Risk Awareness, Annie K. Griffith
Menstrual Cycle Phase Effects On Alcohol-Impaired Driving Performance And Risk Awareness, Annie K. Griffith
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Growing evidence indicates that risky behavior among women is elevated during the late follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, likely due to increased estradiol levels. Furthermore, alcohol-induced impairment of women’s inhibitory control is significantly greater during the late versus early follicular phase. Consequently, cycle phase may influence outcomes of poor inhibitory control while intoxicated, such as alcohol-impaired driving. Alcohol-impaired driving risk manifests in two ways: risk-taking while driving, and risk awareness regarding the decision to drive. This dissertation tested the hypothesis that alcohol-induced increases in driver risk-taking and decreases in risk awareness would be exacerbated during the late versus early …

Daily Rhythms In Psychosocial Stress, Sleep, And Mood: A Multimethod Approach To Transdiagnostic Psychopathology Risk And Intervention, Gabriel Gilmore
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Rhythms are central to nearly every core physiological and psychological process and have profound influences on overall health and well-being, particularly in the context of mood disorders. This dissertation emphasizes a rhythm-centered framework for understanding transdiagnostic psychopathology, proposing that the temporal organization of psychosocial stress, sleep, and mood provides crucial information for the development and treatment of mood disorder symptomology. Current literature relies primarily on mean symptom levels, overlooking day-to-day patterns in psychosocial experiences. To address this key methodological gap, three studies are examined. Study 1 develops and validates the Psychosocial Stress Regularity Measure (PSRM), a brief single-item measure of …

Orexin Receptor Modulation In Amygdalar Stress Circuitry Differentiates Resilient And Vulnerable Phenotypes, Megan Marie John
Orexin Receptor Modulation In Amygdalar Stress Circuitry Differentiates Resilient And Vulnerable Phenotypes, Megan Marie John
Dissertations and Theses
Social stress is important for evaluating threats and resource opportunities, however, chronic exposure initiates the onset of psychological disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Stress responsiveness varies between individuals and sexes, resulting in disproportionate diagnoses and ineffective treatment outcomes. Enhancing therapeutic efficacy requires understanding of stress responsivity, phenotype development, and neurocircuitry modifications. Key contributors to stress responsiveness, such as threat of aggression and motivational initiation, influence the development of resilient or vulnerable phenotypes through behavioral and molecular adaptations to stress-related neurocircuitry. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) is a brain region associated with fear learning and integrates stress …

Compression belts (CBs) are sometimes used to reduce respiratory motion during stereotactic body radiotherapy of abdominal cancers with magnetic resonance (MR)-guided online adaptive planning. This study evaluated the dosimetric effects of overriding the relative electron density (ED) value of CBs in creating synthetic computed tomography (CT) scans for MR-guided adaptive planning. We evaluated plans for 12 patients with abdominal cancer and identified that ED values between 0.2 and 0.3 achieved the best approximation of CB ED in dose calculation. Our study presented an approach to estimate appropriate ED overrides for CBs in MR-guided online adaptive planning.

The widespread application of single-cell and spatial omics to models and patient samples has transformed immune cell profiling across physiological conditions. However, knowledge of immune cell states, functions, and gene regulation remains fragmented across publications, limiting our ability to synthesize insights and derive mechanistic understanding from the literature. To address this gap and facilitate literature integration, we constructed Immune Cell Knowledge Graphs (ICKGs)-four cell type-specific graphs derived from over 24,000 cancer immunotherapy-focused PubMed abstracts using large language models (LLMs) with "human verifiable" validation. Unlike conventional databases, which provide context-agnostic pathways, ICKGs capture directed, literature-supported relationships among genes, pathways and immune …

Background: The efficacy of ipilimumab and nivolumab (ipi/nivo) for melanoma brain metastases (MBMs) has been previously reported, leading to uncertainty regarding the optimal role of comprehensive stereotactic radiosurgery (cSRS). We therefore conducted a single-institution retrospective study to compare outcomes of upfront versus deferred cSRS for MBM treated with ipi/nivo.
Methods: We identified patients who started ipi/nivo for newly diagnosed MBMs between 2018 and 2023, with or without upfront cSRS. Patients with >15 MBMs, leptomeningeal disease, or whole-brain radiotherapy at baseline were excluded. Outcomes were compared using multivariable regression and reported as adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) with 95% CIs.

Radiotherapy plays a vital role in cancer treatment, yet its effects on patients' nutritional status can precipitate muscle loss, with significant implications for treatment tolerance and outcomes. Evidence from high-income countries increasingly links radiation-induced muscle loss to adverse clinical outcomes. In contrast, low- and middle-income countries face a stark evidence gap, despite the heightened vulnerability of cancer patients in these settings due to delayed diagnosis, limited access to care, and high rates of co-morbidities. This paper highlights the critical gaps in nutritional care for radiotherapy patients in low- and middle-income countries.
