A Brief Sketch Of The Life And Work Of Charles Edwin Bessey, Raymond J. Pool
A Brief Sketch Of The Life And Work Of Charles Edwin Bessey, Raymond J. Pool
Papers in Systematics and Biological Diversity
Charles Edwin Bessey, professor of botany and head of the department of botany in the University of Nebraska since 1884 and a conspicuous figure in American science and education, passed away at his home in Lincoln on February 25, 1915, after a critical illness of four weeks.
The Bessey family is of French extraction, the original form of the name being Besse. The tradition is that the early members of the family, who were Huguenots, were compelled on account of religious persecution to flee to England from the old home near Strassburg in Alsace. This exodus occurred in the latter …

The Habits, Life History, And Structure Of A Blood-Sucking Muscid Larva (Protocalliphora Azurea), Albert Francis Coutant
The Habits, Life History, And Structure Of A Blood-Sucking Muscid Larva (Protocalliphora Azurea), Albert Francis Coutant
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
While studying the blood parasites Halteridium and Proteosoma, and the Filaria of the common crow (Corvus americana), my attention was attracted by an external parasite of some young nestlings which were brought into the laboratory. Observations on this parasite, which proved to be the larva of Protocalliphora azurea (Fall.), form the basis of this paper. The parasite is the immature form of one of the so-called "blue-bottle" or flesh-flies, whose larvae are generally regarded as useful scavengers. More careful observations on the life-histories of many species, however, have shown that they may be, and often are, parasites …
Summary Of Two Years' Study Of Insects In Relation To Pellagra, Allan H. Jennings
Summary Of Two Years' Study Of Insects In Relation To Pellagra, Allan H. Jennings
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Excerpt:
With the growing interest in pellagra, following the authoritative recognition of its presence in the United States in 1907, the study of its etiology was taken up by various investigators and the several theories of causation were subjected to close scrutiny.
Prominent among these theories was that of insect transmission, first advanced by Sambon, who limited this function to the species of blood-sucking gnats comprising the genus Simulium.
The importance of the disease and the possibility of such a factor in its causation, led the Bureau of Entomology, late in 1911, to undertake an investigation of the subject …
Dr. Nott's Theory Of Insect Causation Of Disease, William A. Riley
Dr. Nott's Theory Of Insect Causation Of Disease, William A. Riley
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Excerpt:
The danger in using isolated sentences from an article as a basis for interpreting the author's theories, is generally recognized, but sometimes the most careful workers fall into the trap. Once the mistaken interpretation is published, it may be copied over and over again until it rises to the dignity of a dogma.
A striking illustration is afforded by the practical unanimity with which writers on the subject of insects and disease credit Dr. Josiah Nott with being the earliest to formulate definitely the theory of mosquito transmission of yellow fever.

Donovan Family : Scrap Book Of Recipes & Household Hints, Ballymore
Books/Book Chapters
Mary Ogle married Captain John Broughton of Maidstone, Kent in 1720 and their daughter Mary was born in Jersey in 1724. She was an heiress and married Edward Donovan, Barrister at Law, of Ballymore, Co. Wexford and 24, Peter Street, Dublin in 1747. They had 21 children, sixteen lived and five died unbaptized. Perhaps, some of her daughters wrote down some of the recipes, as the family would have employed cooks down through the generations.
Their eldest son Richard inherited Ballymore Estate and married Anne Richards, daughter of Goddard Richards at Grange, Co. Wexford. There is little known about her …

Circular No. 15 - Pastures And Pasture Grasses For Utah, F. S. Harris
UAES Circulars
Since the earliest records of man his domestic animals have secured a large proportion of their forage from pastures. Before crops were planted and harvested by man the wild grasses furnished the chief food for numerous kinds of animals, and the cutting and curing of hay came as a later development to supplement natural pasturage in seasons of scarcity.

Circular No. 14 - Housing Farm Poultry, Byron Alder
UAES Circulars
With the exception, perhaps, of actual starvation of the fowls themselves, there is no other factor in connection with the keeping of poultry that will affect egg production and good vigorous growth so decidedly as poor or improper methods of housing. This circular sets forth some of the essentials of a good house for Utah conditions, and offers plans of three houses in which an attempt has been made to include these essentials. The ideas and plans presented here do not represent anyone person's original work. They are a compilation of the work done on this subject by those who …

Two Lincoln (Nebraska) Typhoid Fever Epidemics Of 1911 And 1912., Herbert H. Waite
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
On August 29, 1912, I was requested by the Board of Health of the city of Lincoln to make an investigation to determine if possible the origin and cause of an outbreak of a disease reported as typhoid fever which was then prevailing. This outbreak was said to be most prevalent in one particular portion of the city and consequently attention was turned to that portion. Of the cases reported an investigation was made of over 60 individuals and after considering all the probable causes for the majority of those affected the conclusion was reached that all could be logically …
Circular No. 7 - Labor Saving Devices For The Farm Home, Leah D. Widtsoe
Circular No. 7 - Labor Saving Devices For The Farm Home, Leah D. Widtsoe
UAES Circulars
This paper was written for and read before the first International Congress of Farm Women held at Colorado Springs, October 17th to 21st, 1911. A few changes have been made in the manuscript and some illustrations added.
The name indicates that it is written for the progressive farmers of some means--since all labor saving devices cost more or less money. The farm home which finds it difficult to keep flour in the barrel, naturally will not be interested in $125.00 water systems--except as an ideal they may attain to some day, and ideals are always helpful. To find ways and …

A Classification For Forestry Literature, Faculty Of The Yale Forest School
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
The following classification for forestry literature has been prepared by the Faculty of the Yale Forest School for use in its library. It is published to supply the demand for a simple and comprehensive classification that is adapted to any library system. The work was begun about one year ago and included a study of all available data on the subject. A tentative outline was submitted to prominent members of the profession from whom helpful suggestions were received.
The subject has been divided into nine parts of approximately equal importance. The secondary divisions also have been limited to nine and …

Present Methods Of Teaching Entomology At The University Of Nebraska, Lawrence Bruner
Present Methods Of Teaching Entomology At The University Of Nebraska, Lawrence Bruner
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
'When our Secretary sent out his preliminary notification of this meeting and asked me to take part in a discussion of "present methods of teaching Entomology," the matter at first seemed of little importance so far, at least, as the speaker was concerned. However, after giving the subject some thought I have decided that it might be well at least to take the time and trouble to attempt to explain briefly a few of the methods by which the student in Nebraska is enabled to absorb some entomological information. In order to do this with an unbiased feeling it might …

New Elementary Agriculture, Charles E. Bessey, Lawrence Bruner, Goodwin D. Swezey
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
This is an agricultural nation. The products of the soil are the basis of her industries and her prosperity. The children of our great Commonwealths should be familiar with our crops, our grains and grasses, our flowers and fruits, our trees and shrubs and weeds, our domestic animals and birds and insects. Our children should have a practical knowledge of the management of a farm, of the composition of the soil, and of the adaptability of the farm and its soil for the cultivation of certain plants and the counter effect of such plant growth upon the soil. They should …

The House Fly (Musca Domestica) And Allies, Lawrence Bruner
The House Fly (Musca Domestica) And Allies, Lawrence Bruner
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
"Of what use are flies, anyway?" This and similar questions have frequently been asked of the writer by persons who seem to think that each and every living thing has been created solely for some special benefit to man.
Primarily the common house fly (Musca domestica), together with several of its allies which habitually frequent human habitations, are scavengers. In this role they assist in the removal of filth and litter of various sorts that too often are permitted to accumulate in the vicinity of our homes, schools, offices, and ' places of business or pleasure. These flies …

Bulletin No. 102 - Poultry Experiments, James Dryden
Bulletin No. 102 - Poultry Experiments, James Dryden
UAES Bulletins
There are many problems connected with the housing of poultry. Among them the question of egg fertility is one of the most important. We have begun investigations at this Station to learn if possible what kind or method of housing is most conducive to a high percentage of fertility in the eggs. It is a serious question with many poultrymen how to maintain the percentage of fertile eggs, and there have been cases where the poultryman has been driven out of the business because of inability to renew his flock. There is little doubt that the artificial methods, both in …
