Influence Of Winter Housing Conditions On Growth Rates And Feed Consumption Of Dairy Heifers, Emery H. Bartle Jan 1950

Influence Of Winter Housing Conditions On Growth Rates And Feed Consumption Of Dairy Heifers, Emery H. Bartle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is important in dairy cattle management to maintain steady and continuous growth of heifers and thereby secure properly developed cows which will give the production that is expected of them when they are brought into the milking herd. In general, heifer calves during the first twelve months of their growing period are carefully managed as to feed, housing and care to promote normal growth. However, they are often neglected during their yearling stage to the point where growth is retarded because of environment factors. On many dairy farms in the North Central States the management of yearling dairy heifers …

Salmonella And Paracolon Species Isolated From The Wild Brown Rat, Rattus Norvegicus, In The City Of Richmond, Virginia, John Miles Sharpley

Master's Theses

The importance of bacteria as a cause of serious intestinal diseases in man and. other animals has been recognized since the early days of the science of bacteriology. Of those forms usually associated with intestinal disturbances in man, the species considered most important are those belonging in the Salmonella group, the Paracolon group, and the Shigella group. Also, it has been known since the early part of this century that the conman rat serves as an important vector for the dissemination of infectious organisms. For example, standard textbooks list rats as primary vectors of enteric bacteria. However. there has been …

Leaflet No 1002 - Swine Paratyphoid (Salmonellosis Necrotic Enteritis), C R. Toop

Bulletins 1 - 2999

Paratyphoid is an infectious disease of pigs which is likely to make it appearance wherever pig raising is practised.

It may occur in an acute septicaemic form which is often rapidly fatal and accompanied by serious mortality and in a sub-acute or chronic form known as necrotic enteritis which is characterised by unthriftiness and scouring. The out breaks occurring in Western Australia are principally of the acute type and they are usually associated with the introduction of pigs from saleyards.

An Ecological Study Of Helminths Of Some Wyoming Voles (Microtus Spp.) With A Description Of A New Species Of Nematospiroides (Heligmosomidae: Nematoda), Merle L. Kuns, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

An ecological and taxonomic study of the helminth parasites of voles (Microtus spp.) in the Jackson Hole region of Wyoming is reported.

Nematospiroides microti n. sp. from Microtus montanus nanus and M. richardsoni macropus is described and figured.

A cestode, Paranoplocephala infrequens, and a nematode, Syphacia obvelata, were generally distributed throughout the region in all habitats except the sage flats.

A trematode, Quinqueserialis hassalli, was recovered only from voles collected near streams at low altitudes. This was presumably due to the localized distribution of the molluscan intermediate host.

Four helminths, viz., Hymenolepis horrida, Heligmosomum costellatum …

Studies On Some North American Shrew Cestodes, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In spite of the importance of the various species of shrews to the biotic community, several aspects of their ecology remain very incompletely known. The helminths parasitic in the more conspicuous small mammals in North America have been studied more or less completely, but those occurring in shrews have been largely disregarded. This situation is particularly inappropriate when one considers that shrews often constitute the most abundant mammalian group in a given area. We have attempted to secure an adequate amount of shrew helminth material for study, and it is the purpose of this paper to present observations resulting from …

Observations Of The Life Cycle And Larval Development Of Paruterina Candelabraria (Goeze, 1782) (Cestoda: Dilepididae), Robert L. Rausch Nov 1949

Observations Of The Life Cycle And Larval Development Of Paruterina Candelabraria (Goeze, 1782) (Cestoda: Dilepididae), Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Paruterina candelabraria (Goeze, 1782) is parasitic in owls in Europe and North America, and appears to be the most frequently encountered cestode occurring in strigiform birds (Wolffhugel, 1900; Rausch, 1948). It is the purpose of this paper to present observations on the larval development and life cycle of P. candelabraria. Apparently nothing is known concerning the life cycles of cestodes of the genus Paruterina Fuhrmann, 1906, most of which occur in passeriform birds.

A Filter Paper "Chromatopile", Herschel Mitchell, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The application of one- and two-dimensional paper chromatography to the separation of small amounts of many kinds of compounds has become a well-established and useful technique (1, 2, 3, 5, 6). In general these methods do not handle sufficiently large quantities of materials for isolation and chemical identification. Large columns of starch and other materials have been used satisfactorily for handling larger quantities of mixtures (4). Starch columns proved to be unsatisfactory, how- ever, for isolation of certain substances under investigation in this laboratory. As a consequence, a new and simple apparatus and technique have been developed, using …

A Critical Study Of North American Cestodes Of The Genus Andrya With Special Reference To A. Macrocephala Douthitt, 1915. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae), Robert L. Rausch, Everett Schiller Jun 1949

A Critical Study Of North American Cestodes Of The Genus Andrya With Special Reference To A. Macrocephala Douthitt, 1915. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae), Robert L. Rausch, Everett Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Eight species of cestodes belonging to the genus Andrya Railliet, 1883, have been described from North American rodents. To the present time, 6 of these have been considered valid (A. primordialis Douthitt, 1915; A. macrocephala Douthitt, 1915; A. neotomae Voge, 1946; A. microti Hansen, 1947; A. sciuri Rausch, 1947; A. ondatrae Rausch, 1948). The genus Andrya was separated by Kirschenblatt (1938) into two subgenera, depending upon the presence or absence of a prostate gland. Of the North American species, only one (A. primordialis) possesses a prostate gland. Since we are concerned essentially with the other 5 closely-related …

A Preliminary Study Of The Siphonapterous Ectoparasites Found On The Mammals Of The Families Cricetidae And Muridae In Utah County, Vernon J. Tipton

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the species of fleas infesting the mammals of the families Cricetidae and Muridae in Utah County. This was accomplished by establishing twelve collecting stations throughout the county from which 198 mammals were collected. From these hosts, 392 fleas were collected representing three families, nineteen genera , and twenty-four species. Four species are new to the State of Utah and twenty-two species are recorded from Utah County for the first time.

A Comparative Study Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Treating Milk For Cheddar Cheese Making, Mounir Ramzi Nagmoush May 1949

A Comparative Study Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Treating Milk For Cheddar Cheese Making, Mounir Ramzi Nagmoush

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In many countries of the world and in some parts of the United States milk is produced which has a high bacterial contamination. Such milk of undesirable quality is frequently delivered to factories engaged in the manufacture of cheddar cheese. This milk commonly contains large numbers of lactic acid-producing bacteria or other types of microorganisms which cause objectionable flavors and textural defects in the cheese. The improvement of the quality of milk supply under some conditions is a matter of great difficulty so that the manufacture of inferior quality milk into cheese is a problem often encountered.

In the United …

On Some Grasses, Chiefly Of The Edwards Plateau Of Texas, V. L. Cory

Field and Laboratory

In 1885 the condition of my father's health obliged our family to move to a drier climate and a higher altitude. In so doing, we followed the pioneers closely enough to witness the transformation of a prairie country into a Great Plains empire devoted to the growth of a grass called wheat. Among my earliest remembrances is that of a sea of other tall grasses, principally the little blue stem.

Have you ever been unhappy and probably disagreeable because you couldn't have a certain dress, shoes or hat that you thought you just had to have? Most girls, and sometimes grown people, at one time or another have felt this way. Usually these girls would not have felt unhappy about being unable to have a certain dress if they had made a study of their clothing expenditures and had spent their money wisely.

Some Additional Observations On The Morphology Of Dendrouterina Botauri Rausch, 1948 (Cestoda: Dilepididae), Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The scolex has never been described for cestodes of the genus Dendrouterina Fuhrmann, 1912. The two species belonging to this genus, D. herodiae Fuhrmann, 1912, and D. botauri Rausch, 1948, were described from incomplete material. Because of the lack of a scolex, this genus was only tentatively placed by Fuhrmann (1912) in the family Dilepididae.
Persistent collecting during the spring migration of 1948 made possible the examination of a number of bitterns, Botaurus l. lentiginosus (Montagu). A single bird, collected on May 5, 1948, at Madison, Wisconsin, was found to be infected with two specimens of Dendrouterina botauri. Observations …

SDSU Extension Circulars

The B-Plan is to help you with the planning and preparing of luncheons or suppers. The number of meals per day is a matter of custom. Our three meals are breakfast, luncheon and dinner. We eat one light meal (breakfast), one moderate meal (luncheon or supper) and one heavy meal (dinner). In this plan we are concerned with the moderate meal. Noon seems like the favored time for this meal. There is more variety in luncheon menus than in breakfast menus. Such factors as age, sex, occupation, state of health, habit and season influence what we eat at each meal. …
