The Taxonomic Value And Variability Of Certain Structures In The Cestode Genus Echinococcus (Rudolphi, 1801) And A Review Of Recognized Species, Robert L. Rausch Nov 1953

The Taxonomic Value And Variability Of Certain Structures In The Cestode Genus Echinococcus (Rudolphi, 1801) And A Review Of Recognized Species, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Although cestodes of the genus Echinococcus have been much studied in the past, there is need for an evaluation of these morphological characters used as the basis for species differentiation. The generous cooperation of other investigators in providing necessary foreign material and the results of nearly five years of field work in Alaska make possible such a study. It is the purpose of the paper to evaluate morphological characters used at the species level to differentiate these cestodes, and to review the status of species currently considered valid.

Bulletin No. 364 - The Halogeton Problem In Utah, C. Wayne Cook, L. A. Stoddart Nov 1953

Bulletin No. 364 - The Halogeton Problem In Utah, C. Wayne Cook, L. A. Stoddart

UAES Bulletins

Halogeton (Halogeton glomeratus) although introduced into Utah only 20 years ago, has spread widely on the west desert and into extensive areas on the east desert. This plant has become the most feared poisonous plant in the state because people have been lead to believe that it would limit livestock production to areas kept free of the weed.

The Bluebonnets (Lupinus) Of Texas, Lloyd H. Shinners Oct 1953

The Bluebonnets (Lupinus) Of Texas, Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

By act of the legislature, Lupinus subcarnosus was designated the official state flower of Texas. Most of the bluebonnets in the state are thereby excluded from recognition as state flowers, a consequence of lack of sufficient taxonomic study. When the conservative opinions of a Sereno Watson and the exceedingly liberal ones of a Charles Piper Smith agree in treating our two most widespread annual species as a single one, it may seem ultra-Rafinesquian to resurrect any names from synonymy. Nevertheless there are several distinct (albeit closely related) species in Texas, as indicated in the key and notes below. Surprisingly, there …

Distribution Of The Barnacle Chthamalus Dalli Pilsbry At Cabrillo Point, Monterey Bay, California, William B. Stallcup

Field and Laboratory

In this work, I tried to learn the vertical distribution of Chthamalus dalli in the Monterey Bay intertidal zone, and its distribution in such areas as receive, or are protected from, wave impact.

Effects Of Weather-Condition On The Turtle Creek Plankters Near Dallas, Texas, Stanton J. Erickson Oct 1953

Effects Of Weather-Condition On The Turtle Creek Plankters Near Dallas, Texas, Stanton J. Erickson

Field and Laboratory

An annual temperature cycle exists in fresh waters. This cycle, associated with periods of winter and summer stagnation, and spring and fall turnover, is governed by the addition and loss of heat. The amount of heat (in gram-calories) needed to raise the water temperature from its winter minimum to its summer maximum, is known as the "annual energy" or "heat budget." The heat-gain occurs in the spring, and effects spring-turnover; the heat-loss occurs in the fall, and effects fall-turnover. Over a period of years, the heat gained equals the heat lost (Allee 1939.) Plankters in their life cycles also exhibit …

Observations On A Partially-White English Sparrow, Passer Domesticus Domesticus, William B. Stallcup

Field and Laboratory

Reports in ornithological literature concerning albino- or partially-white birds are not rare. Few of these reports, however, include details of the actual coloration or of the behavior of such individuals.

Some Preliminary Studies Of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Vectors In Utah, Marvin Dale Coffey Aug 1953

Some Preliminary Studies Of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Vectors In Utah, Marvin Dale Coffey

Theses and Dissertations

That the tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, was the vehicle of transmission for the disease Rocky Mountain spotted fever was first suggested by Wilson and Chowning (1902). The disease itself has been recognized since 1873, being first known from the Bitter Root Valley of Montana. The first medical record, however, was reported from Idaho by Wood (1896).

On The Status Of Some Arctic Mammals, Robert L. Rausch Jul 1953

On The Status Of Some Arctic Mammals, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The mammal fauna of arctic Alaska is comprised of about thirty species, most of which are widely distributed. A few of these are essentially nearctic species, having extended their range northwestward during post-Pleistocene time. The majority, however, consists of forms which are either circumboreal in their distribution, or which have closely-related palearctic counterparts-considered specifically distinct hy most North American mammalogists. Sorne of the foremost Old World workers, however, do not agree that Bering Strait constitutes a barrier which effectively separates the Old World fauna from the New.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xiii. Disease In The Sea Otter, With Special Reference To Helminth Parasites, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

During the spring of 1951, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service undertook the removal of sea otter, Enhydra lutris (L)., from the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, for the purpose of restocking range from which the animals have long been exterminated. The decision to undertake this activity was influenced by the nature of military operations planned for the island later the same year. The capture and removal of the otter were under the supervision of Mr. Robert D. Jones, Biologist, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Heavy losses among the animals shortly after capture made the venture unsuccessful. Many deaths …

Some Local Impacts Of Reservoirs In South Dakota, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station Jun 1953

Some Local Impacts Of Reservoirs In South Dakota, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The South Dakota Coordinating Committee for Missouri Basin Development appointed a sub-committee to study some of the local impacts of inundation of land in reservoir areas. The purpose of the study was first to get a clear understanding of the local problems arising from the inundation of large areas of land, and secondly, to consider suggestions for improving the rules and procedures used in land acquisition programs. The building of certain dams in the Missouri Basin was given general approval in the Flood Control Act of 1944. Further approval has been given through subsequent appropriations. The sub-committee was not asked to …
