Joseph Pitty Couthouy (1808-64) In Texas, S. W. Geiser Oct 1957

Joseph Pitty Couthouy (1808-64) In Texas, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

One of the most interesting and appealing members of the scientific staff of the Wilkes Exploring Expedition around the world (1838-42) was Joseph P. Couthouy. The biographers, however, have dealt badly with him. Neither Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography, nor the curiously selective Dictionary of American Biography give a sketch of his life. Nor is there one in that omnium-gatherum, the Lippincott-Thomas biographical dictionary (which can hardly be called selective, judging from some inclusions). Fragmentary accounts of him are given in various notes on the work of the Wilkes expedition; and we have early been dependent on Bouve's (1880) and …

Gustavus Wilhelm Wuerdemann (1817-59), Early Naturalist Of The U.S. Coast Survey, S. W. Geiser Oct 1957

Gustavus Wilhelm Wuerdemann (1817-59), Early Naturalist Of The U.S. Coast Survey, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

The recent appearance of Wraight & Roberts' sequicentennial historical account of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey calls to mind the splendid natural-history collections that G. W. Wurdemann, tidal-observer and meteorologist, made during the years 1844 to 1859, especially in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. As no extended biographical notice of this naturalist has appeared in the nearly one-hundred years that have passed since his death, the present note may be of interest to students of the history of scientific exploration in the early South and Southwest.

Meal Planning For South Dakota 4-H Girls, Jane Meyer

SDSU Extension Circulars

Cooking's fun, so let's begin! Even if you're a very young 4-H girl, you can cook. But, you must start with simple foods. As you learn more, and practice, cooking will be easier. You can then make more difficult dishes, and even plan and prepare some family meals. Let's start by learning some basic rules. You need to be neat and clean; you should always be safe; you should measure correctly; you must know how to read recipes. A good cook knows and follows these rules. You'll want to know them too!

Distribution And Specificity Of Helminths In Microtine Rodents: Evolutionary Implications, Robert L. Rausch Sep 1957

Distribution And Specificity Of Helminths In Microtine Rodents: Evolutionary Implications, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The taxonomic status of anoplocephaline cestodes of microtine rodents has been reviewed. Of the genus Andrya Railliet, 1883, five species are considered valid: A. macrocephala Douthitt, 1915; A. primordialis Douthitt, 1915; A. montana Kirshenblat, 1941 ; A. arctica Rausch, 1952; A. bairdi Schad, 1954. Of the genus Paranoplocephala Luehe, 1910, six species are regarded as valid: P. omphalodes (Hermann, 1783); P. blanchardi (Moniez, 1891); P. infrequens (Douthitt, 1915); P. variabilis (Douthitt, 1915); P. lemmi Rausch, 1952; P. neofibrinus Rausch, 1952. Andrya caucasica Kirshenblat, 1938, and A. bialowizensis Soltys, 1949, are regarded as synonyms of A. macrocephala. Paranoplocephala brevis Kirshenblat, 1938, …

Rat And Mouse Control On The Farm, John A. Lofgren Jul 1957

Rat And Mouse Control On The Farm, John A. Lofgren

SDSU Extension Circulars

Each year the Norway ( or brown) rat and the common house mouse consume thousands of bushels of grain and other foods on South Dakota farms. They attack grain in the field and in farm storage. At the time they consume the grain they also pollute and contaminate it by their droppings, urine and hair. Every 24 hours each rat voids an average of 70 pellets and about 15 cc of urine. Such contamination makes food grains subject to seizure by the Food and Drug Administration because they are unfit for human use. The monetary losses resulting from such seizure …

The Occurrence Of Echinococcus Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In Japan, Robert L. Rausch, Jiro Yamashita Jul 1957

The Occurrence Of Echinococcus Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In Japan, Robert L. Rausch, Jiro Yamashita

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Since 1937, when alveolar hydatid disease was first recognized on the Japanese island of Rebun, 25 cases have been investigated clinically. About one percent of the population of the island is believed to be infected. (Yamashita et al., 1955). Five cases also have been reported from other islands, some of these involving emigrants from Rebun (Inukai et al., 1955; Yamashita, 1956).
