Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxxiv. The Parasites Of Wolves, Canis Lupus L., Robert L. Rausch, Francis Williamson

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

It is generally recognized that canine animals comprise an important reservoir of parasites and diseases transmissible to man. These animals, including the domestic dog, have unusual economic importance in arctic and subarctic North America, particularly for the Eskimos and Indians living in more remote regions. These aboriginal peoples continually have close association with canine animals and would appear to be quite vulnerable to infection from this source. That this is true is already evident, although data on morbidity from animal-borne diseases are far from complete. At the present time, at least in Alaska, these people have little ability to lessen …

Bionomics Of Culex Tarsalis Coquillett In Utah County, Stanley K. Taylor Jul 1959

Bionomics Of Culex Tarsalis Coquillett In Utah County, Stanley K. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents information concerning the bionomics of Culex tarsalis Coquillett in Utah County. Observations indicate that rock piles and talus slides are typical hibernation sites. The spring emergence from hibernation occurred between 28 March and 7 April 1959. Larvae breed in a great variety of habitats, including street-gutters, animal tracks, marshes and waste water from irrigation systems. The peak population density for both larvae and adults occurred during the first week in August. Charts, graphs, drawings and photographs are used in the presentation of data.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxxv. On The Identity Of Certain Cestodes (Taeniidae) From Foxes, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Some species of the genus Taenia Linnaeus, 1758, are morphologically so similar in the adult stage that their separation is very difficult. Complicating this problem is the questionable validity of certain of these species which have been insufficiently characterized. There are two species, however, the adults of which possess well defined morphological difference but which have been repeatedly confused despite their having been adequately described by early investigators. These cestodes, Taenia crassiceps (Zeder, 1800) and T. polyacantha Leuckart, 1856, have for many years been recognized solely by their larval characteristics under the misconception that the adults were indistinguishable.

Identification Of Larval Ticks Of The Genus Ixodes Known To Occur In Utah, Leland D. White

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to present an analysis and key to the larvae of the nine species of Ixodes known to occur in Utah. These are I. kingi, I. muris, I. texanus, I. pacificus, I. spinipalpis, I. marmotae, I. ochotonoe, I angustus, and I. sculptus. Larvae from the first five of these nine species used in this study were reared in the laboratory by worked cited in the secion on Analysis of Species. those of the remaining four were identified on the basis of their presence with identifiable numphal and adult forms. Host specificity, although certainly variable with …

Sheep Production Guide, James J. O'Connell Jun 1959

Sheep Production Guide, James J. O'Connell

SDSU Extension Circulars

Sheep production in South Dakota offers farmers an additional means of stabilizing their income and production. The two cash crops per year, wool and lambs, have always been popular. With the necessity of planting more grasses and legumes to conserve our land, the need of putting more emphasis on roughage-consuming animals is evident. During World War II the sheep numbers in the United States declined about 40 percent from their high peak of 1942. However, since the United States produces only a fraction of the wool that this country consumes, and with sheep numbers likely to stay below the peak …

Pharmacological Studies Of Antidiabetic Chinese Herbs, Mun Fa Lee Jun 1959

Pharmacological Studies Of Antidiabetic Chinese Herbs, Mun Fa Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Rehmannia glutinosa, Atractylus ovata, and Polygonatum chinense have all been employed by the Chinese as oral antidiabetic agents and reported by Min (1928), Kin (1931), and Li et al. (1936) to possess hypoglycemic activity. This prompted the pharmacological studies of these herbs.

Materials and methods. Their pharmacognosy was condensed from all available Chinese and scientific literature. Preliminary chemical and physical analyses included determinations for moisture, ash, crude fat, carbohydrates, protein, phosphorus, pH, alkaloids, melting point, and spectroscopy. Employing the Somogyi-Nelson method, their glycemic activity was studied in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Stress reactions were minimized. The effect …

Origin And Performance Of Ranger Alfalfa, W. R. Kehr

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Ranger alfalfa was developed through the cooperative efforts of personnel of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and released for seed increase in 1940. It is a winter-hardy, bacterial wilt resistant variety synthesized from five basic strains selected from Cossack, Turkistan and Ladak. Breeding methods used in the development of this variety were described in detail. Research results obtained on the performance of the basic strains and on the seed lots, produced under certification procedures, in controlled wilt and cold tests and forage yield trials under field conditions at the Nebraska station were presented …

Lethal Concentrations And Detoxification Time Of Toxaphene For Goldfish, Gambusia And Rainbow Trout, Gar W. Workman May 1959

Lethal Concentrations And Detoxification Time Of Toxaphene For Goldfish, Gambusia And Rainbow Trout, Gar W. Workman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the past few years the Utah Fish and Game Department, as well as the fish and game departments of other states, has been spending fisheries money for fish eradication on both lakes and streams. The Utah Fish and Game Department recently suggested to the University that research be initiated on the subject of toxaphene as a fish poison. Consequently, a better insight into conditions that exist for a given water type could be developed.

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On Asparagus And Tomatoes, Arthur L. Rivers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since growers are generally unable to produce food the year-round, preservation of available food by the growers and processors has continued to challenge the minds of these men and their scientific cohorts. Even the consumer is subject to this problem and mist rely on those from. whoa he receives food as to its present and eventual condition. Many methods of preservation have been used such as pickling, drying, smoking, canning, and freezing. Most of these preservation methods require excessive handling and/or extensive storage facilities.

The Effect Of Nutritional Education On The Food Habits Of High School Students, Gladys C. Hyer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

"From the day that Adam and Eve shared an apple in the Garden of Eden, food and the partaking of food have been of infinite significance in the life of man."

There is a growing concern among nutritionists and others about the food habits of teenagers, Although the United States is considered to be the best fed nation in the world, there is an important group of our population, abut 16,000,000 teenagers, who have alarmingly poor food habits.

Effects Of Gamma-Radiation On The Quality And Shelf-Life Of Certain Fruits, Diane Weber Box May 1959

Effects Of Gamma-Radiation On The Quality And Shelf-Life Of Certain Fruits, Diane Weber Box

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The story of the development of food preservation is as old as the story of man. Cavemen and nomadic tribesmen have little heed to food preservation. They threw away the food left when their hunger was satisfied and searched for more when famished . However, from the time men began to settle down and have permanent homes, the need for some means of retarding food spoilage has been evident.

Feeding Protein, Phosphorus And Energy Supplements To Beef Cows On Utah Desert Ranges, Robert Hyrum Olsen May 1959

Feeding Protein, Phosphorus And Energy Supplements To Beef Cows On Utah Desert Ranges, Robert Hyrum Olsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many of the beef cattle in the Great Basin area are maintained part or all of the year on rangelands. Most of those going on to desert ranges for only part of the year go on during the late fall, winter, and early spring. It is estimated that 50-60 percent of the 600,000 beef cattle grazing on range lands in Utah graze on the one-fourth million acres of desert or semi-desert sometime during the year.
