Cutting Costs In Calf Rearing, N A. Scott
Cutting Costs In Calf Rearing, N A. Scott
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
RAISING calves as herd replacements and as a sideline to provide added income is becoming increasingly popular.
This is particularly noticeable since the inception of the Artificial Breeding Scheme whereby farmers are at liberty to breed herd replacements from their most productive cows and use semen from beef breeds for the poorer types.
Pullorum-Tested Poultry Flocks : 1960, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Pullorum-Tested Poultry Flocks : 1960, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
EARLY in 1955, an amendment to the Stock Diseases Act made blood-testing compulsory for all commercial breeding and hatchery flocks of poultry, and it was required that the incidence of infection, as determined by the last test prior to the commencement of hatching, must be less than two per cent.
A System For Making Selective Matings In Dairy Cattle, Basil Ralph Eastwood
A System For Making Selective Matings In Dairy Cattle, Basil Ralph Eastwood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term “selective matings” implies the selection of a sire to breed to each female on an individual, rather than a group or herd basis. Mating systems, other than random mating, may be classed either as the mating of like to like or as the mating of unlikes. This likeness or unlikeness may be based either on blood relationship or on individual appearance. The advantage and limitations of each mating system have been well worked out on a theoretical basis, and some of system have been thoroughly tested by experimentation and in the field. In actual practice many breeders use …

Lupinosis, H W. Bennetts
Lupinosis, H W. Bennetts
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
LUPINOSIS is a disease which has caused severe mortalities in West Australian sheep flocks in recent years, and one which—because of the important role which lupins are playing in light land development—must inevitably continue to be a matter of serious concern.
Vermin Control In W.A, A R. Tomlinson
Vermin Control In W.A, A R. Tomlinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE annual report of the Agriculture Protection Board of W.A. for 1958-1959 indicated that while vermin control had continued at a relatively high standard throughout the State, most of the animal and bird pests were at the lowest level within the memory of most people.
However, there were ample warnings that any relaxation in control work could have rapid and serious consequences.
Pulpy Kidney Is Still A Sheep Killer, F C. Wilkinson
Pulpy Kidney Is Still A Sheep Killer, F C. Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ALTHOUGH considerable publicity has been given to methods of control by vaccination, numbers of sheep are lost every year in outbreaks of infectious enterotoxaemia— the disease commonly known as "pulpy kidney."
Cattle Lice : Spray Now For Prevention, F C. Wilkinson
Cattle Lice : Spray Now For Prevention, F C. Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ALTHOUGH lice infestation can occur in any season of the year, the heaviest infestations are found during the winter.
This build up of lice infestation normally starts in the autumn but if the cattle are treated by spraying at this period, the majority of the lice are killed and the build up is prevented.
Thus the old saying "Prevention is better than cure" certainly applies with regard to cattle lice.
Control Of The Red-Legged Earth Mite And Lucerne Flea : Treatment Of Seed With Systemic Insecticides, M M H Wallace
Control Of The Red-Legged Earth Mite And Lucerne Flea : Treatment Of Seed With Systemic Insecticides, M M H Wallace
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE red-legged earth mite, Halotydeus destructor (Tuck.), and the lucerne flea, Sminthurus viridis (L.), are at present controlled effectively, cheaply and safely by a combined DDT/malathion spray (Jenkins, 1956, 1957) and this continues to be the general recommendation for farmers.
However, this combination has some disadvantages. The DDT in the spray ensures some residual control of the earth mite but has the unfortunate property of toxicity to the bdellid mites which are useful predators of the lucerne flea.
The malathion in the spray assists the DDT to control the earth mite and provides a good, quick kill of the lucerne …
Milk Fever (Hypocalcaemia) Of Cows, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Milk Fever (Hypocalcaemia) Of Cows, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE condition known as milk fever is almost essentially a disease of highly productive adult milking cows at the time of calving.
It is characterised by a low blood calcium level causing a sudden general depression of consciousness of the cow and muscular paralysis.
Without treatment most cases result in the death of the cow.

How Efficient Is Your Drenching Gun? Does It Deliver Sufficient Drench To Kill The Worms?, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE drenching gun pictured certainly doesn't. It is set to give two fluid ounces of drench (60 ccs approximately). However, when tested by squirting the fluid into a measuring cylinder, instead of down the sheep's gullet, it delivered only 30 ccs.

Comparison Of Vegetation Of Kansas-Nebraska Drift-Loess Hills And Loess Plains, J. E. Weaver
Comparison Of Vegetation Of Kansas-Nebraska Drift-Loess Hills And Loess Plains, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The western edge of True Prairie gives way very gradually on the Loess Plains south of the Platte River to Mixed Prairie of the Great Plains. North of the Platte a similar transition occurs in the valleys and on the slopes of the Loess Hills. But in northern Kansas the True Prairie of the Kansas-Nebraska Drift-Loess Hills is definitely separated by the Flint Hills Region from its western edge on the Kansas-Nebraska Loess Plains. In this study the vegetation, soils, and other environmental factors of the two areas are described and compared.

Malaysian Parasites Xxxv-Xlix, W. W. Macdonald
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
This is the third Study of the series from this Institute on the external and internal parasites and the biting insects of the Malaysian region. The earlier two volumes were planned and edited by Dr. J.R. Audy, and on his departure from Malaya in the middle of 1959 Mr. W. W. Macdonald continued the work which had been begun and collated and edited the papers in this present Study.
In the two previous volumes (Study No. 26, 1954 and No. 28, 1957) the emphasis was on the taxonomy of Trombiculid mites. In the present volume the emphasis has changed, and …
Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxxvil. Description Of Schizorchis Caballeroi N. Sp. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae), With Notes On Other Parasites Of Ochotona, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Schizorchis caballeroi n. sp. has been described from the collared pika, Ochotona collaris (Nelson), from Alaska, and has been distinguished morphologically from its congeners, S. ochotonae Hansen, 1948, and S. altaica Gvozdev, 1951.
Nine species of helminths have been described 10 dale from North American pikas, O. collaris and O. princeps (Richardson). These mammals are markedly allopatric and do not share any species of helminth. Nematodes of two genera, Eugenuris Shults and Labiostomum Akhtar, 1941, occur in O. collaris as weIl as in palearctic species of Ochotona. This, along with other pertinent information, is taken to suggest that O. …
Trichinosis In The Arctic, Robert L. Rausch
Trichinosis In The Arctic, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Trichinella spiralis (Owen, 1835) is a common parasite of mammals in the Arctic. High rates of infection have been recorded in terrestrial carnivores (particularly Canidae, Ursidae, and Mustelidae), but representatives of several other groups, including marine mammals, have been found infected. From existing information, it appears that the natural cycles have at least three ecologicaIIy distinct patterns, described in this note.

Observations On The Biology Of Schistocerca Venusta, David Allyn King
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Statement Qf the problem. The green valley grasshopper, Schistoceroa venusta Scudder, is one of the most common grasshoppers to be found in the San Joaquin Valley and environs. Despite the fact that the insect is commonplace, very little work has been done on its biology. It was the purpose of this study, therefore, to learn by field and laboratory observations of the life cycle and habits of Schistoceroa venusta.
