Interaction Between The Parameters Of Hydrostatic Pressure And Temperature On Aspartase Of Escherichia Coli, Roger D. Haight, Richard Y. Morita

Papers in Microbiology

HAIGHT, ROGER D. (University of Nebraska, Lincoln) AND RICHARD Y. MORITA. Interaction between the parameters of hydrostatic pressure and temperature on aspartase of Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 83:112-120. 1962.-The data obtained from studies of an aspartase preparation and aspartase in cells of Escherichia coli indicate that there is an interaction between the parameters of hydrostatic pressure and temperature. Pressure was found to decrease aspartase activity at 45 C and lower in vitro and below 53 C in vivo, thereby indicating that when the enzymesubstrate complex is formed there is an increase in molecular volume which is counteracted by pressure. Distributional Notes On Parasitic Mites, William F. Rapp Jr. Jan 1962

Distributional Notes On Parasitic Mites, William F. Rapp Jr.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Although much has been written on the systematics of mites little, to date, has been published regarding their distribution. Strandtman and Wharton (1958) have given distributional data on a large area basis i.e. United States, Mexico, etc., but have given only little specific distribution. Unfortunately much of our knowledge relative to mite distribution is limited to a knowledge of type localities. In the case of parasitic mites one cannot assume that the distribution of the parasite is the same as the host. Unfortunately at this time, we do not know what factors limit the distribution of parasitic mites.

Conclusions

Farm animals in southeast Kazakhstan are widely infected with sarcosporidia: 96.9% of the sheep, 88% of the cattle, 70% of the camels, and 40% of the swine.

The muscles most often and most heavily infected are: in sheep, the heart, diaphragm, and median buttock muscle; in cattle, the heart and esophagus; in camels, the esophagus, diaphragm, and median buttock muscle; in swine, the heart, diaphragm, and median buttock.

The most objective data on infection of animals can be obtained by studying a minimum of 3 or 4 muscles of different muscular systems simultaneously.

Heavy infection of muscles by sarcosporidia, …

A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites Of Pheasants From Brown County, South Dakota, Donald E. Gilbertson Jan 1962

A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites Of Pheasants From Brown County, South Dakota, Donald E. Gilbertson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a study of the helminth endoparasite of the Chinese or ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). The digestive and respiratory tracts of 262 pheasants, all of which were collected in Brown County, South Dakota, were examined. Collections were ,made from January, 1961, through November of the same year. The problem was divided as follows: (1) locating and Identifying the helminth parasites, (2) relating parasitism to the age of the birds, (3) ascertaining the seasonal distribution of the parasites, and (4) determining what gross pathological changes were due to parasitism. Previous to this study, little or no literature was available …

Massive Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage Originating From The Cecum, C. Grodsinsky, B. E. Brush

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Six cases are reported of arterio-venous malformations of the cecum presenting with hemorrhage. Newer techniques of diagnosis and management are reviewed. These cases are of interest because of their relative uniqueness and clinical importance. The diagnosis of underlying disease in these cases is often difficult. Massive bleeding, if not controlled, is an indication for immediate operation. Recurrent bleeding, even if previously controlled, can also be considered a surgical indication.

Food Dollars And Sense, Ruth B. Amidon Sep 1961

Food Dollars And Sense, Ruth B. Amidon

SDSU Extension Circulars

Having enough money to "eat as you please" is no assurance of an adequate diet. Dollars spent for food without a consideration of food and health needs of the family are dollars spent without "sense." The purpose here is not to propose spending less money for food but to discover how to get more value for the money spent. The "Basic Four Food Guide" has been devised to make choosing an adequate well balanced diet easy for anyone. The variety of foods with-in each group makes it possible to choose a well balanced diet to suit almost any taste or …
