Interbasin Movement Of Ground Water At The Nevada Test Site, Isaac J. Winograd
Interbasin Movement Of Ground Water At The Nevada Test Site, Isaac J. Winograd
Publications (WR)
The present paper presents hydraulic evidence for the interbasin circulation of ground water through carbonate rocks of Paleozoic age at the Nevada Test Site. An integral part of this evidence is the discovery that aquifers in alluvium and tuff, formerly thought to be the principal aquifers at the Test Site, are semiperched above a thick tuffaceous aquiclude that separates them from the carbonate rocks.
This paper is based on one of the studies being made by the Geological
/="/">Survey for the Atomic Energy Commission. These studies seek to evaluate
/="/">the risk that may arise if ground water should …

A Comparative Study Of The Species Of The Genus Crotaphytus Holbrook (Iquanidae), Wilbur Gerald Robison Jr., Wilmer W. Tanner
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
The anterior musculature of C. wislizeni and C. collaris is described in detail and compared. Size and number relationships of the skull and its component bones, the sternum, the clavicle, the parts of the hyoid, the general body form, certain scales and teeth, and the eggs per clutch were determined for large samples of both species and then statistically compared. The general character of many structures is also compared and notes are made on C. reticulatus.
The differences encountered by this study, as well as the valid ones of those listed by Smith (1946:158–159) are not considered to be important …

Safe Rural Water Supplies, Cooperative Extension Service, South Dakota State College
SDSU Extension Circulars
A safe water supply source should be obtained from an uncontaminated water-bearing formation or from a properly located and constructed farm pond. The water should be pleasing to drink, bacteriologically and chemically safe, and delivered through a system which will keep it safe at all times. To accomplish this, the water source and system must be located and constructed to keep out surface and near-surface contamination, or be continuously treated.
Rural Sewage Disposal, Cooperative Extension Service, South Dakota State College
Rural Sewage Disposal, Cooperative Extension Service, South Dakota State College
SDSU Extension Circulars
A sanitary sewage disposal system is necessary to dispose of human excreta in rural homes where public sewers are not available. Sewage wastes, if not properly disposed of, are dangerous because they contain living bacteria and viruses, some of which are of disease producing types. For this reason, every effort should be made to prevent health problems and to dispose of all human wastes so that no opportunity will exist for contamination of water or food. This circular outlines the basic principles of design, construction, installation, and maintenance of a septic tank and subsurface disposal system for rural residences where …

Food Habits Of The Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Jerry Maurer
Food Habits Of The Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Jerry Maurer
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
In his 1920 paper, L. H. Tiffany states that the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) offers for the game fish one of the most direct routes possible from manufacturer to consumer. In view of this conclusion, the research reported in this paper was undertaken for the purpose of determining (a) what foods are ingested by gizzard shad, and (b) if there is any correlation between food ingested and that available in greatest supply in the natural habitat. The study was centered in an area of the Mississippi River in the vicinity of Winona, Minnesota. Some additional work was done about thirty-five …

A Simple Feeding Guide : Balanced Rations For Dairy Cows, K Needham
A Simple Feeding Guide : Balanced Rations For Dairy Cows, K Needham
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
MANY technical articles have been written on the nutrition of dairy cattle and the methods employed in compounding a balanced ration have often been explained.
This article aims to present the principles of compounding a balanced ration in a simplified form, and suggests rations which should be easily adopted on any dairy farm.
Vermin Control Research In Western Australia 1952-1962, C D. Gooding
Vermin Control Research In Western Australia 1952-1962, C D. Gooding
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Ten years ago this month the Agriculture Protection Board of Western Australia began setting up a section within its Vermin Control Branch to tackle some of the scientific aspects of vertebrate pest control.
C. D. Gooding, B.Sc. (Agric), reviews the first 10 years of vermin control research work in Western Australia.
Day-Old Fowl Pox Vaccination, P Smetana
Day-Old Fowl Pox Vaccination, P Smetana
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
FOR many years the standard procedure for fowl pox prevention on West Australian poultry farms has been to vaccinate young stock at 12 weeks of age. Although most farmers have used this system successfully it has a number of weaknesses which can be overcome by day-old vaccination.
A new day-old fowl pox vaccine now on the market has many advantages over the normal vaccine, which is used at about 12 weeks old.
In tests at the Poultry Research Station it gave satisfactory results.
Hints On Chicken Rearing, P Smetana
Hints On Chicken Rearing, P Smetana
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
For the next few months poultry farmers will once again be concerned with rearing chickens.
A good brooder, ample space, good sanitation, plenty of water and a balanced feed are still the essentials of successful chicken raising, says P. Smetana, B.Sc. (Agric), Acting Officer-in-Charge of the Poultry Branch.
Weaning And Weaner Management, R J. Lightfoot
Weaning And Weaner Management, R J. Lightfoot
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
MOST of Western Australia's Merino flock owners wean their lambs in the months of August, September and October.
Too often this is done indiscriminately to fit in with other operations, or lambs are left on their mothers for long: periods until the ewes are remated.

Vibriosis : Major Cause Of Infertility In Our Dairy Herds, J Craig
Vibriosis : Major Cause Of Infertility In Our Dairy Herds, J Craig
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
VIBRIOSIS is the main cause of infertility in West Australian dairy herds.
Its main feature is repeated return to service, and it can cause heavy financial losses.
The disease can be eliminated from a herd by the exclusive use of artificial insemination, or by the adoption of a "two herd" system.
Cobalt : Its Use To Control Wasting Disease, Laurence C. Snook
Cobalt : Its Use To Control Wasting Disease, Laurence C. Snook
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
FOR many years it was assumed that in Western Australia cobalt deficient areas were restricted to a coastal fringe which rarely extended more than 20 miles inland.
This has proved a costly false assumption. During recent years cobalt deficiency has been diagnosed over extensive areas of inland country.

Some Factors Affecting The Composition Of Milk, K Needham
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
FOR many years it has been known all over the world that the composition of milk varies. This variation in quality is considered as a serious problem wherever the dairy industry is established.

Chemical Poisoning In Animals. 4. Phosphorus, H D. Seddon
Chemical Poisoning In Animals. 4. Phosphorus, H D. Seddon
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
WHITE OR YELLOW PHOSPHORUS was at one time widely used in poison baits for crows, rats, foxes and rabbits.
Although it has now been largely replaced, it is still an important cause of accidental death by poisoning.
