Observations On The Biology, Anatomy, And Morphology Of Otobius Lagophilus Cooley And Kohls, C. Selby Herring, D Elden Beck

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The principal objective of this study is to bring up to date information on geographic distribution, seasonal occurrence, and host-parasite relationship of O. lagophilus in western North America. Notes on life history and disease transmission potential are included.

Data and information were obtained from three sources: (1) natural history collections and field records at Brigham Young University over the past twenty years; (2) the Rocky Mountain Laboratory in Hamilton, Montana; and (3) published literature.

All available collection records are presented in a table from which information on geographic distribution, seasonal occurrence, and host-parasite relationship was extracted. O. lagophilus is known …

Biochemical Changes During The Growth Of Fungi: Ii. Ergosterol And Fatty Acids In Penicillium Atrovenetum, David Gottlieb, James L. Van Etten Feb 1965

Biochemical Changes During The Growth Of Fungi: Ii. Ergosterol And Fatty Acids In Penicillium Atrovenetum, David Gottlieb, James L. Van Etten

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Changes in the lipid constituents of Penicillium atrovenetum were studied during the growth and development of this fungus. The stages in development, as measured by the dry weight, were divided into four phases: lag, log, stationary, and death. The total fatty acids on a dry-weight basis increased from a minimum in the spores to a maximum near the end of the log phase of growth. The major fatty acids were palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic. Myristic, pentadecanoic, palmitoleic, heptadecanoic, linolenic, arachidic, and heptadecenoic acids, together with two unidentified components, were also present in the fatty acid fraction. Compared to ungerminated …

Tenebrionidae Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site, Vasco M. Tanner, Willis A. Packham Feb 1965

Tenebrionidae Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site, Vasco M. Tanner, Willis A. Packham

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The intent of this study conducted over a period of three years was to ( 1 ) provide descriptions of the species of tenebrionids found at the Nevada Test Site, (2) determine their relative abundance, (3) determine their seasonal activity, and (4) ascertain their plant community relationships.

A total of 14,650 beetles representing 46 kinds of tenebrionids was collected with sunken can traps, by hand, and ultra-violet light. Collections were made at regular intervals in the following plant communities: Larrea-Franseria, Lycium, Atriplex-Kochia, Grayia-Lycium (disturbed and undisturbed areas), Salsola, Coleogyne, Pinyon-Juniper, and Mixed.

The data obtained from this study indicate that …

Directory - Where To Find It, Air Applicator Institute

Air Applicator Information Series

Where to obtain authentic and needed information is a problem in every new industry. The purpose of this volume is to provide classified lists of sources of material and information.

There is a wealth of information available in the field of agricultural aviation. This material, however, is obtainable in piecemeal form and from many sources. State colleges of agriculture, the United States Department of Agriculture, city and county libraries, chemical and agricultural magazines, chemical companies and state departments of aeronautics are a few of the sources. This volume presents these and other channels of pertinent information for the air-applicator who …

Selecting Efficient Equipment, Air Applicator Institute

Air Applicator Information Series

This volume describes the various components in a sprayer, duster, seeder or fertilizer airplane, and their functions. Emphasis is placed upon the factors which are most important in equipment design. Illustrations are provided of many commercially available units. Beginning with the essential components, the volume finishes with a discussion of airplane types most suitable for agricultural use.

Cytoplasmic Male Sterility And Intergrafts Between Lycopersicon Esculentum And Solanum Pennellii Corr., W. R. Andersen Jan 1965

Cytoplasmic Male Sterility And Intergrafts Between Lycopersicon Esculentum And Solanum Pennellii Corr., W. R. Andersen

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Attempts to transmit cytoplasmic male sterility through intergrafts between Lycopersicon esculenfum and Solanum pennellii have been unsuccessful. This implies that in these materials, the factor conditioning cytoplasmic male sterility is noninfective. The results of this study and other similar studies by other workers suggest the possibility that grafting might be used as a tool in the classification of cytoplasmic factors affecting mole sterility in plants.

Experimental Studies On Habitat Preference And Thermoregulation Of Bufo Americanus, B. Hemiophrys And B. Cognatus, John R. Tester, A. Parker, Donald B. Siniff Jan 1965

Experimental Studies On Habitat Preference And Thermoregulation Of Bufo Americanus, B. Hemiophrys And B. Cognatus, John R. Tester, A. Parker, Donald B. Siniff

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper reports on responses lo habitat and thermoregulotion exhibited by three species of toads, Bufo omericanus, B. hemiophrys and 8. cognalus, under artificial conditions. The response of the toads to sparse, medium, and dense vegetative cover was investigated by establishing artificial cover types in a sheet-metal enclosure. Each of the three species spent more time in the dense cover than i11 sparse or medium cover. A second experiment to determine if the toads would be attracted by odor to samples of mud, water, and vegetation from their respective ranges suggested that the toads moved randomly to the habitat samples. …

Fruit Growing In Western Australia, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture, Western Australian Tourist Development Authority Jan 1965

Fruit Growing In Western Australia, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture, Western Australian Tourist Development Authority

Horticulture published reports

Revised 1965.

The Mediterranean type climate of the coastal belt of the south-west of Western Australia is suitable for the commercial production of apples, pears, various stone fruits, oranges, grapes, and several other less important fruits. The warm dry summers (November-March), are too severe for the profitable production of many berry fruits and the winters too cool and wet for most tropical fruits. Figs, mulberries and olives all flourish in this climate but, for economic reasons, few are grown commercially.

A small tropical fruit industry, mainly bananas, has been established along the banks of the Gascoyne River at Carnarvon, which …
