A Bibliography Of Anomalies Of Fishes, Supplement 1, C.E. Dawson Jan 1966

A Bibliography Of Anomalies Of Fishes, Supplement 1, C.E. Dawson

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The original bibliography (Gulf Res. Repts. 1 (6), 1964) has, reportedly, been of considerable value to workers interested in the teratology of fishes and other vertebrates. The present supplement is the first of a proposed series which will attempt to include all new and pertinent publications as well as those which have previously been overlooked. The overall usefulness of the bibliography should be enhanced by its maintenance on a relatively current basis. Supplements will be issued irregularly and will normally include 75 to 100 new citations.

The Elimination Of Cultivation In Apple Orchards : A New Approach To Orchard Soil Management, S E. Hardisty Jan 1966

The Elimination Of Cultivation In Apple Orchards : A New Approach To Orchard Soil Management, S E. Hardisty

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE idea of eliminating cultivation in orchards suggests a reversal of accepted local practice in orchard soil management—but there is plenty of evidence to show that a noncultivation system has much in its favour.

In this article the advantages and disadvantages of the three main forms of orchard soil management are discussed and experimental evidence is presented in support of noncultivation.

An alternative method, "winter sod" culture, is proposed for irrigated orchards.

Early Spraying Esential For Webworm Control, J A. Button

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Results of trials conducted during the last two seasons have emphasised the need for very early treatment of webworm infested crops.

Where heavy infestations occur every effort should be made to apply treatments during the first fortnight after crop emergence

Down And Out [Pulpy Kidney Disease], F C. Wilkinson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Two days previously the weaner mob had broken through a gate into a hundred acre paddock in which an excellent green oat crop was growing.

The owner had not been particularly worried because the oats needed grazing. When however, he went to check the water troughs and found 17 weaners dead, he became perturbed.

Worms In Sheep. 1. The Worms Which Infest Sheep In W.A, R W. Butler

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Parasitic worms of sheep occur so widely that they are a problem of most flocks.

While a few worms might be of little consequence, worms can kill many sheep and could cause serious economic loss in the agricultural areas of W.A.

This first article describes the types of worms and their effects on sheep.

Production-Line Calf Feeding, F J. Fielder, A. Hamilton

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY cream-producing dairy farmers have found that it can be profitable to increase the number of calves they rear. In fact, it is big business for those who can rear up to 200 calves a year, and a few have already achieved this number.

English abstract

The Symposium on Partridge was organized by the Forestry and Czechoslovak Game Management Research Institute and the Czechoslovak Hunting Union and held in Prague, Czechoslovakia in October 1965. Participants in the symposium were specialists and scientific workers from Czechoslovakia and some scientists from abroad. There were two major themes: 1. the present state of partridge research and 2. conservation issues, including the problems and prospects of partridge stocks.

Papers concerned biology of partridges, ecology, population dynamics, migration, nestng, food, influence of predators, health, helminths, gapes, hemogram, rearing of partridges, rearing of chicks, penning, wintering in pens, protection during …

Historical. General descriptions of intertidal zonation have been published by many workers for almost all littoral areas, both marine and lacustrine (Doty, 1957; Glynn, 1965; Hedgpeth, 1957; Lewis, 1964; Pennak, 1951). The fact that animal species of the sandy shore are few in number eliminates many complex interspecific reactions, while great numbers of individuals make population studies feasible. In addition to certain general works (Dahl, 1952; Pirrie et al., 1932; Yonge, 1950) a number of papers have discussed causative factors or mechanisms for animal zonation.

Inheritance Of Behavioral Characters In F2 Mallard X Pintail (Anas Platyrhynchos L. X Anas Acutas L.) Hybrids, Roger S. Sharpe, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1966

Inheritance Of Behavioral Characters In F2 Mallard X Pintail (Anas Platyrhynchos L. X Anas Acutas L.) Hybrids, Roger S. Sharpe, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

The present study was undertaken to compare the inheritance of behavioral and morphological features of two closely related species of Anas, and to attempt to establish whether any significant degree of behavioral variation occurs in the second generation which could be attributed to these genetic processes.

Two closely related species of Anas, the Common Mallard (A. p. platyrhynchos) and the Common Pintail (A. a. acuta), were selected for study. Both species have been repeatedly hybridized in captivity (GRAY, 1958; PHILLIPS, 1915, 1921), and occasionally hybrids occur in the wild. MAYR (1963) has commented on the …

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xliii. Strigea Macropharynx Sp. N., A Trematode Parasite Of Falco Rusticolus L., Georges Dubois, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Strigea macropharynx sp. n. (Trematoda : Strigeata, Strigeidae), an intestinal parasite of Falco rusticolus L., is described. Falconiformes harbor two species of Strigea (S. falconis Szidat, 1928, and S. macroconophora,/i> Dubois and Rausch, 1950) with vitellaria terminating near the copulatory bursa. Both differ from the new species in having a pharynx that is smaller than or subequal to the buccal sucker, as well as in other details. In S. elegans Chandler and Rausch, 1947, a parasite of Strigiformes, the eggs are larger, the testes of different form, and the vitellaria extend significantly farther into the region of the copulatory …
