Chiropteran Mortality, David D. Gillette, John D. Kimbrough
Chiropteran Mortality, David D. Gillette, John D. Kimbrough
Fondren Science Series
The study of chiropteran mortality is a difficult one because observations concerning mass mortality, predation, and fatal accidents are sporadic and unexpected. Almost every known predaceous animal preys on bats from time to time; but (with one or two rare exceptions) do so only when an occasional opportunity presents itself, and do not specialize in bat predation. Our knowledge of bat pathology is meager. Mass-mortalities have been reported only from sight observations, and the causative organisms rarely ascertained, because of the unexpected encounter. The relationships between human and chiropteran diseases are becoming much better understood; this study is mostly oriented …
Bats: Carriers Of Human Disease-Producing Agents, Robert J. Baker
Bats: Carriers Of Human Disease-Producing Agents, Robert J. Baker
Fondren Science Series
For many years bats have been known to be harbingers of various agents which produce disease in man. Elsewhere in this volume certain parasites of bats are discussed including the association of these animals with Trypanosoma cruzi in South America and Texas (Ubelaker, 1970). Little is known concerning the association of bats with bacteria which cause disease in man. Four serotypes of Salmonella known to cause salmonellosis have been isolated from bats, one from bats collected in the Canal Zone (Klite & Kourany, 1965) and the other three from bats collected in southwestern Colombia, South America (Arata et al., 1968). …
Bat Conservation, Edwin Gould
Bat Conservation, Edwin Gould
Fondren Science Series
Since we know that some bat populations attain astronomical size, bat conservation may seem inconsequential. However, during the past 10 to 20 years, some bat-banders and other mammalogists have reported a decrease of bats in hibernating cave colonies. In general, summer colonies of most species of bats are dispersed; from these sites migrating bats converge on relatively few caves in which they hibernate. Some species are probably most vulnerable in at least the following four situations. 1. Hibernating bats that roost in caves or mines may be destroyed by teenagers or adults who have no concern for the bats. 2. …
Effect Of Days Open On Lactation Production, Roger L. Ripley
Effect Of Days Open On Lactation Production, Roger L. Ripley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Accurate evaluation of dairy production records is essential if dairymen are to establish and maintain profitable dairy herds and efficient culling programs. Improper record evaluation may result in. saving breeding stock that otherwise might be eliminated. Many factors may influence the validity of individual production records. Adjustment factors, currently in use by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for sire and cow evaluations, are generally accepted as removing the majority of these influences. Consequently, these factors are invaluable to practical dairymen. The adjustment factors, suggested by McDaniel, et al. (24) in 1967, take into account the geographical location, season …

Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher
Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Ecological studies on the distribution of fairy shrimps have been made from 246 sites in the sandhills region of Nebraska. New records for Nebraska have been established for Artemia salina, Branchinecta campestris, B. lindahli, B. mackini and Cyzicus mexicanus. Seasonal populations of shrimp have been located in habitats containing permanent fish populations. Water mineralization was the dominant environmental condition related to the distribution of phyllopods with sodium and potassium compounds predominating in the strongly alkaline lakes. Several of the Artemia lakes were classified as hydroxide sites. Many of the alkaline ponds, where B. lindahli and B. campestris flourish, are …

The Incidence And Intensity Of Haematozoa In The Common Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos) Of Western Washington, Ronald E. Scarvie
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and intensity of blood parasites in the common crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos). The following observations on the protozoan genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium and Trypanosoma with observations on the nematode group microfilaria, are based entirely on materials collected at Auburn, Washington during the spring of 1970.
Despite the numerous studies on prevalence of blood parasites in various birds, there have been few attempts to study the relative incidence and intensity of haematozoa in blood and tissue smears taken from the common crow. So far as the author has been able to ascertain, …

The Effects Of Alcohol On Three Levels Of Complex Human Behavior, Grady Vancil Maraman
The Effects Of Alcohol On Three Levels Of Complex Human Behavior, Grady Vancil Maraman
Theses and Dissertations
That alcohol affects human behavior has been known for centuries. However, how and why it affects behavior has not been precisely established despite extensive research and study. The inconsistent action of alcohol at different doses on different tissue systems and on different response systems has been well documented (Kalant 1 referenced in 39). The exact sites of action of alcohol in the central nervous system and the relative influence of each of these sites in cognitive and motor behavior are not known. The primary purpose of this experiment was to study the effects of blood alcohol concentrations below 0.100 percent …
Evaluation Of The Essentiality Of Dextran In The Dental Caries Process, William Redman Grigsby
Evaluation Of The Essentiality Of Dextran In The Dental Caries Process, William Redman Grigsby
Theses and Dissertations
In summary, the main points to support the view that dextran synthesis is unessential to the dental caries process are presented below:
1 . Dextran-fed, microbe-bearing rats do not experience dental caries.
2 . Lactobacillus casei 4646 has no extracellular dextransucrase enzyme or other extracellular enzymes which release glucose or fructose from sucrose .
3. L. casei 4646 does not synthesize extracellular polysaccharide of the dextran class when grown on sucrose-containing medium.
4. L. casei 4646 does not exhibit in vitro, adherent growth on stainless-steel wire when grown on sucrose-containing medium .
5. L. casei 4646 does not cause dental …

Conclusions
1. Under experimental conditions wild boars are sensitive to toxoplasmosis to a significant degree. In all 6 of the infected animals the disease ended lethally. The characteristic clinical symptom was involvement of the eyes.
2. Spontaneous Toxoplasma antibodies were observed in 36 (34.3%) of 105 boars studied with CFRs.
3. Toxoplasma was found microscopically in smears of kidney, spleen, and brain from 3 boars; the bioprobe method revealed it in the lymph nodes of 10 animals; in these cases the strain isolated was avirulent.

The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler
The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Post-treatment discomfort following endodontic procedures can be caused by inflammation due to injudicious use of intracanal medicaments. Camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination is advocated to reduce the inflammatory potential of the germicide and thus reduce the occurrence of post-operative pain. It is imperative that a medicament retain antimicrobial activity while reducing inflammatory potential.
This investigation was undertaken toward determining on an in vitro quantitative bactericidal versus bacteriostatic basis by use of the broth dilution test tube method whether camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination retains antimicrobial activity comparable to selected other commonly used nonspecific germicides. …

Alcaptonuria And Ochronosis With Diabetes Mellitus And Mycosis Fungoides: A Case Report, Jamshed U. Haq, Roy B. Patton
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A Negro woman with alcaptonuria, ochronosis, ochronotic arthropathy, diabetes mellitus and mycosis fungoides died of acute renal failure due to diabetic glomerulonephropathy and ochronotic nephrosis. The role of the renal lesions of ochronosis is presented in potentiating the effect of an underlying renal disease producing rapidly progressive kidney failure. The occurrence of ochronosis, diabetes mellitus and mycosis fungoides is apparently coincidental only. Special stains of tissue sections confirm the similarity of melanin and ochronotlc pigment.
Cation Transport I. Metabolic Activity Of The Polyphosphoinositide Complex In Isolated Renal Cortex Tubules, Paul Bartlett, James F. Bossart
Cation Transport I. Metabolic Activity Of The Polyphosphoinositide Complex In Isolated Renal Cortex Tubules, Paul Bartlett, James F. Bossart
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Although several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the transport of hydrophylilc cations across lipoprotein barriers, the nature and identity of the carrier mechanism have not yet been elucidated. The present communication is concerned with a mechanism postulating that monoesterified phosphate on the inositol moiety of phosphatidyl inositol might provide anionic sites that function as cation carriers via a phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycle, catalyzed in its simplest sequence by phosphatidyl inositol kinase and diphosphoinositide phosphomonoesterase activities. In this context, one might reasonably expect that turnover of monoesterified phosphate in the polyphosphoinositides of isolated renal cortex tubules would be reduced in tubules in …
The Mechanism Of Formation Of Certain Ventricular Septal Defects: A New Hypothesis, Jami G. Shakibi, Lester Weiss
The Mechanism Of Formation Of Certain Ventricular Septal Defects: A New Hypothesis, Jami G. Shakibi, Lester Weiss
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The generally accepted and most common mechanism of the pathogenesis of VSD is the failure of fusion of the conus ridges, atrioventricular cushions and the ventricular muscular septum. Our findings in a study of serial sections of the hearts of newborn gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) leads us to hypothesize a second, less common, mechanism for the development of VSD, i.e., an exaggeration of the normal process of resorption and atrophy which undermines the septal cusp of the tricuspid valve, thus separating it from the muscular septum. This hypothesis can explain an instance of high membranous VSD in the form of a …

Evaluation Of Cellular-Level Haversian Bone Resorption In Human Hyperparathyroid States: A Preliminary Report, H. M. Frost, A. R. Villanueva, Z. F. Jaworski, P. Meunier, A. G. Shimizu
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Cellular-level bone resorption was evaluated in 16 patients undergoing renal dialysis and in two with primary hyperparathyroidism, by quantitative histological means using tissue time markers. When averaged over periods greater than two weeks, the individual osteoclasts in these patients resorbed less bone in unit time than normal.
Promethazine-Chlorpromazine Combination In The Treatment Of Unmanageable Psychotic Patients, Armando R. Favazza
Promethazine-Chlorpromazine Combination In The Treatment Of Unmanageable Psychotic Patients, Armando R. Favazza
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Administering a combination of promethazine and chlorpromazine to patients with a "galloping psychosis" has an antipsychotic and tranquilizing effect which calms them down to a more manageable and less aggressive state. The drugs are chemically similar; promethazine's actions are strongly potentiated in the combination, so large doses must be given under careful supervision. Case histories demonstrate successful short term management of acutely psychotic, aggressive patients who were a danger to themselves and others.

Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis: The Report Of A Case Associated With Severe Pulmonary Disease And Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Russell J. Crider, Philip Bentlif
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is discussed with emphasis on its clinical, radiologic, sigmoidoscopic, surgical and pathological characteristics. The four theories of the etiology of P.Cl. are neoplastic, infectious, nutritional, and mechanical. These theories are discussed, and a case of P.C.I, associated with severe pulmonary disease and chronic lymphocytic leukemia is presented to lend support to the mechanical theory.
