Post-Mortem Storage Of Tissue For X-Ray Microanalysis In Pathology, Godfried M. Roomans, Joanna Wroblewski Jun 1985

Post-Mortem Storage Of Tissue For X-Ray Microanalysis In Pathology, Godfried M. Roomans, Joanna Wroblewski

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Possible alternatives to rapid freezing in liquid nitrogen of tissue for X- ray microanalysis of electrolytes at the cellular level were investigated. These alternatives might be used in cases where tissue becomes available for examination, e.g., at autopsy, but liquid nitrogen is not immediately available. Rat submandibular gland was used as a test tissue. Freezing of pieces of tissue in a conventional freezer at -80°C or even at -20°C retained the elemental distribution at the cellular level, and also retained the difference between a 'normal' and a 'pathological' (mimicked by an inject ion of a high dose of isoproterenol) situation. …

Alterations Of The Intracellular Water And Ion Concentrations In Brain And Liver Cells During Aging As Revealed By Energy Dispersive X-Ray Microanalysis Of Bulk Specimens, Gy. Lustyik, I. Zs.-Nagy Nov 1984

Alterations Of The Intracellular Water And Ion Concentrations In Brain And Liver Cells During Aging As Revealed By Energy Dispersive X-Ray Microanalysis Of Bulk Specimens, Gy. Lustyik, I. Zs.-Nagy

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Age dependence of the intracellular concentrations of monovalent ions (Na+, K+ and Cl-) was examined in 1, 11 and 25-month-old rat brain and liver cells by using energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The in vivo concentrations of Na+, K+ and Cl- ions were calculated from two different measurements: The elemental concentrations were measured in freeze-dried tissue pieces, and the intracellular water content was determined by means of a recently developed X-ray microanalytic method, using frozen-hydrated and fractured bulk specimens as well as subsequent freeze-drying.

All the single monovalent ion concentrations and consequently, also the total monovalent ion content showed statistically significant …

Endometrium Cell Surface Abnormalities In The Syrian Hamster As A Result Of In Utero Exposure To Diethylstilbestrol, J. Gilloteaux, A. W. Steggles Aug 1984

Endometrium Cell Surface Abnormalities In The Syrian Hamster As A Result Of In Utero Exposure To Diethylstilbestrol, J. Gilloteaux, A. W. Steggles

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe changes in the hamster endometrium cell surface following in utero pre- and/or postnatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES). Some of the changes in cell surfaces are associated with alterations in cell sizes and shapes (from columnar to cuboidal and/or squamous) and in microvilli and mucous secretion. In all cases, DES treated uteri show mucosal cell surface pleomorphism, apocrine secretion and cystic accumulation of secretory material. Microvillous pleomorphism and peculiar linkages attaching one microvillus to others were investigated. Although the function and nature of such linkages is unclear, their presence seems to be more …

A Comparison Of Two Methods Of Presenting Nutrition Education To Senior Citizens Participating In A Congregate Meal Program, Janice M. Williams

Masters Theses

Senior citizens participating in a congregate meal program received nutrition education lessons in two different ways. One group received nutrition lectures, a second group recieved nutrition lectures accompanied by printed material. A third group served as a control. Each group contained an urban and rural site. The nutrition lectures and printed material centered on the Basic Four food groups. The lessons were presented to the subjects once a week in four successive weeks. The length of the nutrition lecture for each food group was twenty minutes. The senior citizen took pre and posttests to measure an increase or decrease in …

Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson Jun 1983

Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Silver impregnated sections of mouse digital pads were studied using light microscopy to detect age-related changes of the neuronal component of Meissner corpuscles. Direct microscopic observation, photomicrographs and camera lucida tracing were utilized. From qualitative observation, the corpuscular neurites were found to undergo morphological age-related changes of diameter, tortuosity, varicosity, branching and terminal expansion size. Quantitative examination was made of the number of corpuscles, corpuscular neurites, branching neurites, cross-innervations, terminal neurite expansions, neurite intraepidermal continuations and terminal axonal processes. The number of corpuscles and neurite intraepidermal continuations decreased with age while having significant linear correlation; whereas, branching increased with age …

The Effect Of Two Athletic Training Programs On Aerobic Capacity, Anaerobic Capacity, Reaction Time, And Percent Body Fat, Paul W. Petersen Jul 1976

The Effect Of Two Athletic Training Programs On Aerobic Capacity, Anaerobic Capacity, Reaction Time, And Percent Body Fat, Paul W. Petersen

Student Work

It is perhaps obvious that athletic teams, such as basketball and wrestling, use different conditioning programs during the regular season of competition because of the nature of their sports. Although many coaches initiate particular programs and use them year after year, rarely do they have any definite measurements concerning the effects of the program on their athletes other than a win-loss record. To better understand the conditioning that takes place in various sports, in this study, several parameters of fitness were calculated-using the basketball and wrestling teams at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The measurements will indicate the change …

Evaluation Of The Nutritional Needs Of The Elderly Residents In Southwestern Utah, Sharon Fisher May 1976

Evaluation Of The Nutritional Needs Of The Elderly Residents In Southwestern Utah, Sharon Fisher

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Biochemical composition of blood and urine and estimated nutrient intake were used to evaluate the nutritional status of 187 fasting, ambulatory elderly residents of five southwestern Utah communities in the spring of 1975. Nutritional assessments included 17 biochemical and 23 dietary parameters. Measurements were also taken of height, weight, and blood pressure.

Mean energy intakes were lower than the RDA for both men and women (1965 ± 527 Kcal and 1513 ± 371 Kcal, respectively), although a majority of the participants were above ideal weight. Cholesterol values above 250 mg/lOO ml of blood were found in 38 percent of the …

Nutrition Education For The Elderly, Laurie Manahan Aug 1975

Nutrition Education For The Elderly, Laurie Manahan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Abstract not included.

Introduction

This paper examines the topic of nutrition education for the elderly. Only within the past decade has proper nutrition been recognized as making a major contribution to the health and well-being of the elderly. This recognition of the importance of nutrition in the later years has led to the recent establishment of many nutrition programs for the elderly. As nutrition education is seen as an important tool in improving the nutritional status of the elderly, many of these now programs include nutrition education components.

Part One of this paper discusses the relationship between nutrition and aging. …

The Α-Glycerophosphate Cycle In Drosophila Melanogaster Iv. Metabolic, Ultrastructural, And Adaptive Consequences Of Αgpdh-1 "Null" Mutations, Stephen J. O'Brien, Yoshio Shimada Dec 1974

The Α-Glycerophosphate Cycle In Drosophila Melanogaster Iv. Metabolic, Ultrastructural, And Adaptive Consequences Of Αgpdh-1 "Null" Mutations, Stephen J. O'Brien, Yoshio Shimada

Biology Faculty Articles

"Null" mutations previously isolated at the αGpdh-1 locus of Drosophila melanogaster, because of disruption of the energy-producing α-glycerophosphate cycle, severely restrict the flight ability and relative viability of affected individuals. Two "null" alleles, αGpdh-1BO-1-4, and αGpdh-1BO-1-5, when made hemizygous with a deficiency of the αGpdh-1 locus,Df(2L)GdhA, were rendered homozygous by recombination with and selective elimination of the Df(2L)GdhA chromosome. After over 25 generations, a homozygous αGpdh-1BO-1-4stock regained the ability to fly despite the continued absence of …

Effect Of 9 Α-Fluorohydrocortisone Acetate On Gastric And Salivary Electrolytes Of Normal Fasting Subjects, Ardis Stern Beckner Sep 1962

Effect Of 9 Α-Fluorohydrocortisone Acetate On Gastric And Salivary Electrolytes Of Normal Fasting Subjects, Ardis Stern Beckner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effect of 9α-FF on the Na:K ratio, chloride, and pH of saliva and gastric secretions, and on the total and free acid of gastric juice in normal human subjects was investigated. This study was designed to investigate whether conditions could be produced in the normal human subject similar to those present in patients with primary aldosteronism by using large doses of 9α-FF. August and others found a change in salivary electrolytes when cortisone, desoxycortisone, or ACTH were given to normal subjects. In these cases as in primary aldosteronism there was a decreased Na:K ratio and potassium excretion, with sodium …
