AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT is one of fourteen reports in the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council's 1965 Research Series. Each report covers a separate aspect of the Region's development and includes the author's projections and recommendations. Thus the fourteen reports constitute a unified, detailed picture of the Region that will serve as a base for both general and special studies over the years to come. This study was to ascertain whether fomentation covers were contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus prior to being placed on a patient receiving a hydrotherapy treatment.

From a review of literature on the subject of the Staphylococcus aureus organism and from studies of hospital-acquired staphylococcal infection it appeared that: (1) researches had used various techniques for making cultures from fabrics, (2) the Staphylococcus aureus cultures may react in varying ways to the laboratory tests making the classification somewhat difficult, (3) the problem of hospital-acquired staphylococcal cross-infection was present, (4) the role played by the environment in hospital-acquired infections was controversial, and (5) …

Evaluation of many records is the only way valid judgments can be made on abundance and status. The necessity of obtaining exact dates, localities, numbers, and special weather conditions cannot be overemphasized. For this reason, records in supplement to this list are freely solicited.

The present checklist includes all species and subspecies for which specimens exist. In some instances sight records have been adequate reason for including a species on the list when no specimen existed. Two species of cotton rats, Sigmodon minimus Mearns (least cotton rat) and S. hispidus Baird (hispid cotton rat), occur in the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. The northernmost published record-station for S. hispidus is near Scorro, Scorro County ( Bailey, 1931: 167), and that S. minimus is near Isleta, Bernalillo County (Ivey, 1947: 498 and map). When recent field work by the author revealed the presence of both species in the Rio Grande Valley north of these published record-stations the problem arose whether the range extensions were the result of a recent northward extension of the range of the …
