Bacterial Gill Disease Of Freshwater Fishes, S. F. Snieszko Jan 1981

Bacterial Gill Disease Of Freshwater Fishes, S. F. Snieszko

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Bacterial gill disease (BGD) was first described by Davis (1926, 1927), who observed it in fry and fingerling brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) in hatcheries in Vermont. The affected trout were kept in dirt-bottom ponds and were not crowded; , daily mortalities were very low. Mortalities rapidly increased when the water temperature increased and diminished when the temperature decreased. Examination of the diseased trout revealed clubbing of gill filaments. In microscopic examination of wet mounts of the filaments" Davis found that the gill surface was covered with closely adhering strands of long, …

Ethical Concerns In Primate Use And Husbandry, Ardith A. Eudey Jan 1981

Ethical Concerns In Primate Use And Husbandry, Ardith A. Eudey

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

After World War II, a dramatic increase occurred in the utilization of nonhuman primates in biomedical and psychological research and industry. At the same time, field studies on the ecological and social behavior of natural

populations of primates also increased, making possible more realistic assessments of both the behavioral potentiality of primate populations and their conservation status. Despite the growing body of information indicating the endangered or threatened status of most species, many laboratory workers and planning agencies continue to regard primates as renewable resources, even seeking to bypass protective legislation in habitat countries to obtain them. As a consequence, …

The Role And Responsibility Of Zoos: An Animal Protection Viewpoint, John E. Cooper Jan 1981

The Role And Responsibility Of Zoos: An Animal Protection Viewpoint, John E. Cooper

Zoos and Aquariums Collection

The aim of this paper is to look at zoological collections from the viewpoint of the animal and, in particular, to draw attention to areas where welfare considerations should be paramount. I do not intend to cover the capture and transportation of zoo animals, although this is obviously of great importance and must be included in any overall consideration of the welfare of zoo animals. In this paper, however, I shall concentrate upon the care of the animal within the zoo environment.

Scale And Community Structure Of Coral Reef Fishes: A Long-Term Study Of A Large Artificial Reef, John C. Ogden, J. P. Ebersole Jan 1981

Scale And Community Structure Of Coral Reef Fishes: A Long-Term Study Of A Large Artificial Reef, John C. Ogden, J. P. Ebersole

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

he fish community of a large artificial reef made In 1960 of 800 concrete blocks in a seagrass bed on the south coast of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, was studied by comparing a series of visual censuses (1975-1979) with each other and with a 1962 total-poison station collection (Randall, 1963). Discounting the presence of some cryptic species in the poison station that would not normally be seen in visual censuses (N = 10), as well as discounting seagrass-bed residents and roaming species only transient on the reef (N = 13), all of the censuses and the poison station (range …

Trophodynamics Of The Fish Valenciennellus Tripunctulatus. Ii. Selectivity, Grazing Rates And Resource Utilization, R. C. Baird, Thomas L. Hopkins Jan 1981

Trophodynamics Of The Fish Valenciennellus Tripunctulatus. Ii. Selectivity, Grazing Rates And Resource Utilization, R. C. Baird, Thomas L. Hopkins

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Various patterns of resource utilization in the feeding strategy of Valenciennellus tripunctulatus, a small mesopelagic fish of tropical-subtropical oceans, were explored. Ivlev electivity indices suggest that copepods in general and the genus Pleuromamma in particular are being actively selected. Prey-size selection was apparent and strong negative indices were calculated for all plankton smaller than 1 mm. Non-crustacean prey in all size classes also gave negative indices. Strong positive indices were indicated for prey size classes greater than 2 mm. A model was developed to estimate grazing rates and efficiencies which is linearly influenced by swimming speed and plankton abundance, …

Trophodynamics Of The Fish Valenciennellus Tripunctulatus Iii Energetics, Resources And Feeding Strategy, Ronald C. Baird, Thomas L. Hopkins Jan 1981

Trophodynamics Of The Fish Valenciennellus Tripunctulatus Iii Energetics, Resources And Feeding Strategy, Ronald C. Baird, Thomas L. Hopkins

Marine Science Faculty Publications

A model was constructed which relates energy in diet to metabolic requirements for the mesopelagic zooplanktivore fish Valenciennellus tripunctulatus. Linear and Von Bertalanffy growth models were used to explore the energetic consequences of a number of feasible age/growth strategies. Maxlmum efficiencies were obtained with linear growth to about 30 mm in 1 y. Efficiencies declined rapidly for slower growth strategies. It was hypothesized that an 'annual' life history strategy was optimum based on energetic considerations. Copepod prey in the 1-2 mm size class were an order of magnitude more abundant and over 4 times higher in caloric content than …

A Study Of Leslie Model Under Stochastic Environments, Kamran Shaukat Jan 1981

A Study Of Leslie Model Under Stochastic Environments, Kamran Shaukat

Dissertations and Theses

The prediction and analysis of changes in the numbers of biological populations rest on mathematical formulations of demographic events (births and deaths) classified by the age of individuals. The development of demographic theory when birth and death rates vary statistically over time is the central theme of this work. A study of the standard Leslie model for the demographic dynamics of populations in variable environments is made. At each time interval a Leslie matrix of survival rates and fertilities of a population is chosen according to a Markov process and the population numbers in different age classes are computed. Analytical …

Plasmid-Mediated Resistance To Arsenite And Arsenate In Escherichia Coli, Thomas Patrick Trezona Jan 1981

Plasmid-Mediated Resistance To Arsenite And Arsenate In Escherichia Coli, Thomas Patrick Trezona

Dissertations and Theses

Bacterial strains resistant to arsenite, arsenate (or both) are readily isolated from nature. The resistance, in many cases, can be shown to be determined by conjugal plasmids. The mechanisms by which these plasmids confer resistance to arsenic compounds are entirely unknown. This study was undertaken to shed light on some of the physiological and genetic aspects of this resistance using plasmid-bearing strains of Escherichia coli which are highly resistant to both arsenite and arsenate. Most studies were carried out using E. coli J53 (R773) or the plasmid-free strain J53.

Sex Ratio Evolution In A Variable Environment, Eric Charnov, Hartogh R.L. Los-Den, W.T. Jones, J. Van Den Assem Jan 1981

Sex Ratio Evolution In A Variable Environment, Eric Charnov, Hartogh R.L. Los-Den, W.T. Jones, J. Van Den Assem

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

We develop a natural selection model for sex ratio control in a spatially variable environment. Predictions of sex ratio alteration as a function of environmental change are tested in laboratory experiments with two parasitic wasps. Field data from a variety of other organisms also support the model. Finally, we discuss possibilities and difficulties for testing this type of evolutionary model.

Measures Of Racetrack Performance With Regard To Breeding Evaluation Of Trotters, M. J. Ojala, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1981

Measures Of Racetrack Performance With Regard To Breeding Evaluation Of Trotters, M. J. Ojala, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Trotting records on the Finnish Horse were divided into two subsets: the total data set, with 13,000 race records on 554 horses by 206 sires, and the summary data set, with 1,378 records summarized annually for each horse. The purpose of the study was to determine whether these data could be utilized in a simple, yet useful way for the assessment of breeding value. A total of 24 measures of performance based on time at finish, money won and rank at finish were studied in the summary data set. The total data set included four traits compiled from records made …

Studies On Beneficial And Adverse Effects Of Dietary Buffers For Lambs, Jong Kyu Ha Jan 1981

Studies On Beneficial And Adverse Effects Of Dietary Buffers For Lambs, Jong Kyu Ha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Experiments using lambs were conducted to study the effects of buffers or roughages against acidosis occurring during rapid dietary changes. Experiments using rats were conducted to investigate vitamin A and thiamin stability and/or utilization as influenced by bentonite. Incubating rumen fluid in vitro at a pH lower than 6 reduced volatile fatty acid (VFA) production and increased lactate accumulation. Limestone or bentonite at levels of 2% in 92% concentrate diets had little effect on feed intake or rumen and blood parameters during a 7-day treatment period using rumen-canulated sheep. However, 2% NaHCO3 increased rumen pH and feed intake on …

Dye Marking Of Antibiotics Used In Treatment Of Mastitis, Nancy Fairbank Novak Jan 1981

Dye Marking Of Antibiotics Used In Treatment Of Mastitis, Nancy Fairbank Novak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The National Mastitis Council, Inc. defines mastitis as the infection of udder tissues (74). Mastitis is the most costly disease affecting dairy cows; many people do not realize the considerable losses due to mastitis (6). A reasonable estimate of the prevalence of mastitis is 50% of cows infected at any time (62); cows in the average herd contract clinical mastitis 1.5 times per year (74). The minimum antibiotic treatments per case of mastitis is two; with approximately 11 million dairy cows in the United States, the annual minimum number of antibiotic treatments is 33 million. In South Dakota, with nearly …

Sodium Flux Ratio In Voltage-Clamped Squid Giant Axons, David D. Busath, Ted Begenisich Jan 1981

Sodium Flux Ratio In Voltage-Clamped Squid Giant Axons, David D. Busath, Ted Begenisich

Faculty Publications

The sodium flux ratio across the axolemma of internally perfused, voltage-clamped giant axons of Loligo pealei has been measured at various membrane potentials. The flux ratio exponent obtained from these measurements was about unity and independent of membrane voltage over the 50 mV range from about -20 to +30 mV. These results, combined with previous measurements of ion permeation through sodium channels, show that the sodium channel behaves like a multi-ion pore with two ion binding sites that are rarely simultaneously occupied by sodium.
