The Chemistry Of Decomposition: The Mechanisms To Decay The Human Body, Lydia J. Buxa Apr 2025

The Chemistry Of Decomposition: The Mechanisms To Decay The Human Body, Lydia J. Buxa

Senior Honors Theses

Taphonomic analysis separates decomposition into four major stages: fresh, early decomposition, advanced decomposition, and skeletonization. It is easy to demarcate the observable changes to the body, but it is far more difficult to know what underlying biochemical processes are occurring. Fresh decomposition begins with algor mortis, livor mortis, and rigor mortis, which sets the stage for the major workforces of decomposition: autolysis and putrefaction. The external signs of decomposition appear in early decomposition, which can be attributed to the breakdown of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. This also leads to major changes in the moisture levels during advanced decomposition, …

Hybrid Bermudagrass Drought Tolerance In A Cool-Season Climate, Ashley J. Beazer Apr 2025

Hybrid Bermudagrass Drought Tolerance In A Cool-Season Climate, Ashley J. Beazer

Theses and Dissertations

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) (KBG) is the most commonly grown cool-season C3 turfgrass. However, as global temperatures rise, KBG struggles to tolerate higher temperatures, leading to increased irrigation demands--a growing concern in arid and semi-arid regions facing escalating drought conditions. In contrast, hybrid bermudagrass (HBG; Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers. x Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt Davy), a warm-season C4 grass, has demonstrated promising adaptability in traditionally cool-season climates. Since 2008, HBG has been successfully grown with minimal winterkill in Provo, UT, USA, and is now being considered for broader adoption in similar climates. Two separate studies were conducted to evaluate the …

Metabolic And Microbial Crossroads: Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors And Urinary Tract Infections In (Asian) Diabetes Care, Rob E. Carpenter Apr 2025

Metabolic And Microbial Crossroads: Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors And Urinary Tract Infections In (Asian) Diabetes Care, Rob E. Carpenter

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

The global rise of type 2 diabetes, particularly in Asian populations, has led to widespread adoption of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors for glycemic control. While effective, these agents elevate the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by inducing glycosuria, which creates a nutrient-rich environment that favors uropathogen growth. Asian individuals may be disproportionately vulnerable to SGLT2 inhibitor–associated UTIs due to a confluence of factors, including lower body mass index, increased visceral adiposity, congenital urinary tract anomalies, and genetic polymorphisms that impair uroepithelial integrity and immunity. This review integrates emerging evidence on the molecular, anatomical, and immunometabolic mechanisms that underlie infection …

Starting at middle age, adults often suffer from visceral adiposity and associated adverse metabolic disorders. Lineage tracing in mice revealed that adipose progenitor cells (APCs) in visceral fat undergo extensive adipogenesis during middle age. Thus, despite the low turnover rate of adipocytes in young adults, adipogenesis is unlocked during middle age. Transplantations quantitatively showed that APCs in middle-aged mice exhibited high adipogenic capacity cell-autonomously. Single-cell RNA sequencing identified a distinct APC population, the committed preadipocyte, age-enriched (CP-A), emerging at this age. CP-As demonstrated elevated proliferation and adipogenesis activity. Pharmacological and genetic manipulations indicated that leukemia inhibitory factor receptor signaling was …

Cover Crop Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Global Warming Potential In Furrow-Irrigated Corn In The Lower Mississippi River Valley, Diego Della Lunga, Kristofor Brye, Michael J. Mulvaney, Mike Daniels, Tabata De Oliveira, Beth Baker, Timothy Bradford Jr, Chandler M. Arel

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Corn (Zea mays) production systems are described as high risk for emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) due to large fertilizer inputs. Conservation practices, such as cover crop (CC), can limit the effects of agricultural activities on GHGs while increasing carbon and nitrogen storage. The objective of the study was to assess the effects of cover crops, i.e., with CC and no-CC, on GHG (i.e., CO2, CH4, and N2O) emissions and global warming potential (GWP) in furrow-irrigated corn in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Gas sampling was conducted with an automated system that measured GHGs four times daily during the 2024 …

Investigating Genetic Regulators Of Crystal Cell Development In Drosophila Melanogaster, Andrea Feria, Nyla Walbrook, Anisa Turaeva, Rebecca Spokony

Publications and Research

Crystal cells, a subset of Drosophila melanogaster hemocytes, are important for melanization, a crucial immune response. While the genetic regulation of crystal cell develop remains incompletely understood, this study investigates the functions of five candidate genes: ACXB, ACXA, Gp210, CG4390, and Cyp4s3; identidied through previous genome-wide association studies. Using the Gal4/UAS system along with RNA interference (RNAi), we exclusively knocked down each gene in third instar larvae and quantified crystal cell populations following heat shock-induced melanization. Our results imply that the knockdown of ACXB and ACXA significantly increased crystal cell counts in both sexes, suggesting these genes either act as …

Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl Apr 2025

Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl

Honors Projects

When first looking at a children’s book, it appears to be a simple creative project. However, when one finds out the components that go into making one, it becomes clear that simplicity is deceiving. Research, ideation, rough drafts, and scripts are just a few of the necessary components for the finished product, and each one of these components can take multiple days or weeks to complete. This essay is a reflection on my experience of creating a picture book in one semester as I attempt to answer the questions “What if the most efficient process for creating a children's picture …

Water Conservation For The Great Salt Lake: Measuring Success And Uncertainty In Utah's Efforts, Sarah E. Witney Apr 2025

Water Conservation For The Great Salt Lake: Measuring Success And Uncertainty In Utah's Efforts, Sarah E. Witney

Theses and Dissertations

The Great Salt Lake in Utah, United States is one of many saline lakes worldwide that is currently in decline. The shrinkage and collapse of global saline lakes is primarily caused by irrigated agriculture and other human consumptive uses, with secondary contributions from global climate change. Great Salt Lake's area has decreased by more than 50% relative to its long-term natural level. The decline of these lakes triggers serious and long-lasting socioeconomic consequences, including destruction of habitat, degradation of air quality, and damage to the economy. The Utah state government has instituted a variety of programs to conserve water to …

Development And Validation Of A Dynamic Real-Time Risk Prediction Model For Intensive Care Units Patients Based On Longitudinal Irregular Data: Multicenter Retrospective Study, Zhuo Zheng, Jiawei Luo, Yingchao Zhu, Lei Du, Lan Lan, Xiaobo Zhou, Xiaoyan Yang, Shixin Huang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Timely and accurate prediction of short-term mortality is critical in intensive care units (ICUs), where patients' conditions change rapidly. Traditional scoring systems, such as the Simplified Acute Physiology Score and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation, rely on static variables collected within the first 24 hours of admission and do not account for continuously evolving clinical states. These systems lack real-time adaptability, interpretability, and generalizability. With the increasing availability of high-frequency electronic medical record (EMR) data, machine learning (ML) approaches have emerged as powerful tools to model complex temporal patterns and support dynamic clinical decision-making. However, existing models are …

The gut microbiome hosts trillions of microorganisms that metabolize xenobiotics such as drugs and food dyes. Individual differences lead to variable drug metabolism. We studied two azoreductases: E. coli’s P41407 and Alistipes sp. CHKCL003’s A0A143XFE8. Enzyme P41407 acted on methyl red and ethyl red, while A0A143XFE8 acted on these and also on phenol blue, HMND, and sunset yellow. We propose these enzymes function as quinone reductases, requiring a quinone-like intermediate. Three synthesized compounds confirmed similar kinetics. In conclusion, these insights significantly advance …

Effects Of Integrated Pest Management On Honey Bee Behavior And Colony Level Health, Kaitlyn Bresnahan Apr 2025

Effects Of Integrated Pest Management On Honey Bee Behavior And Colony Level Health, Kaitlyn Bresnahan

Biology Student Scholarship

Kaitlyn Bresnahan ’25, Biology major

Faculty mentor: Dr. Rachael Bonoan, Biology

Honey bees face threats from many directions, but the most pressing is the parasitic mite Varroa destructor. One popular method of combatting Varroa is adding drone comb which forces the colony to raise larger, mite-preferred male bees. While this method reduces mite numbers, it may add unnecessary colony-level stress. My research investigates how forcing the hive to raise drones for mite management affects honey bee population growth and foraging behavior. This was accomplished by estimating adult bee population and area of drone brood, and by examining foraging behavior of …

Mycobacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria of the Mycobacterium genus. Several thousand mycobacteriophages have been discovered, isolated, and characterized to advance the current understanding of their genomic diversity. The mycobacterium phage selection proves valuable, as they have a broad host range and potential for therapeutic application to treat pathogenic and antibiotic-resistant mycobacteria, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis infection. Kraw was isolated from a soil sample collected in Oaks Bluff, Massachusetts, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in July 2023. FairyPath, Calvinny, …
