Influence Of Sodium And Calcium Chlorides In The Nutrient Solution On Secretions Of Salt Glands Of Tamarix Species, Don L. Chadwick
Influence Of Sodium And Calcium Chlorides In The Nutrient Solution On Secretions Of Salt Glands Of Tamarix Species, Don L. Chadwick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Salt glands are an adaptation for living in saline habitats possessed by several species of plants. In the family of Plumbaginaceae at least three mangrove genera, Aegialitis, Aegiceras, and Avicennia, possess salt glands according to Scholander (1962). Salt glands of the small ornamental shrubs, Statice gmelini, and Limonium latifoluim of the same family, were studied by Ruhland (1915) and Arisz (1955). Spartina townsendii of the Graminaceae and Tamarix petandra, Tamarix hispida, and Tamarix aphylla of the Tamaricaceae families also have the glands.
Populations Of Peritrichs On The Pond Snail, Physa Gyrina Say, Peter Moyle
Populations Of Peritrichs On The Pond Snail, Physa Gyrina Say, Peter Moyle
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
There are many obscure niches in a, pond that make fascinating ecological studies. The shell of a pond snail such as Physa gyrina Say, is one of these. In this study alone, 18 species of attached animals and plants were found growing on P; gyrina shells. About half of these species occurred on the shells in large numbers and completed a large part of their life cycle there. On P. gyrina, the most abundant animals included three species of protowans and a tendipedid larva. The protozoan species, Epistylus niagarae Stokes, Opercularia ramosa Stokes, and V orticella campanula Ehrenberg all belong …

Ecology Of Summer Aquatic Invertebrate Populations In A Marsh Area Of Utah Lake, David A. White
Theses and Dissertations
Mud Lake marsh lies east of Utah Lake between the cities of Provo and Springville in Utah County. Since 1936 it has become a polluted, odiferous, silted area. A study was conducted on the aquatic invertebrates during the summer of 1962 (June 19 to September 20). An .01 meter2 bottom sampler was used at 30 random stations. Each station was sampled once a week. Water depth, mud, water and air temperatures were taken at each station. Dissolved oxygen (Winkler method) and ion resistance (Wheatstone bridge) were taken each day. The aquatic invertebrate community consisted of benthic (Diptera, Oligochaeta, Nematoda), interphashic …
The Darkling Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site (Coleoptera - Tenebrionidae), Willis A. Packham
The Darkling Beetles Of The Nevada Test Site (Coleoptera - Tenebrionidae), Willis A. Packham
Theses and Dissertations
In the desert areas of southwestern United States the Coleoptera, family Tenebrionidae, constitute a conspicuous part of the ground-dwelling insects. Most species are black or dull chestnut-brown. They are primarily nocturnal and during the day can be found under rocks, debris, loose bark, or in rodent burrows. On cloudy days they may be seen lumbering along the desert floor. Most tenebrionids feed on plant materials of various sorts. In August, 1959, Brigham Young University initiated an ecological study at the Nevada Test Site near Mercury in Nye County, Nevada. As part of that study, emphasis was given to the ground-dwelling …

Comparison Of Spider Populations Of Ground Stratum In Arkansas Pasture And Adjacent Cultivated Field, W. H. Whitcomb, Harriet Exline, Maxine Hite
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Of 64 species of spiders taken from the ground stratum of an Arkansas pasture and adjoining cotton field, only 26 were common to both. Twenty-two were collected only in the cotton field; 16, only in the pasture. Many of the 18 species of lycosids were taken in greater numbers in the cultivated field, especially Pardosa milvina and Lycosa helluo. Eight species of lycosids were found only in the cotton field; two, only in the pasture. Only Schizocosa avida, of the better represented lycosids, appeared to show no preference. Similar relationships are given for dictynids, erigonids, linyphiids, oxyopids, gnaphosids, clubionids, thomisids, …

An Ecological Study Of An Exclosure In The Mountain Brush Vegetation Of The Wasatch Mountains, Utah, Elray S. Nixon
An Ecological Study Of An Exclosure In The Mountain Brush Vegetation Of The Wasatch Mountains, Utah, Elray S. Nixon
Theses and Dissertations
This is a comparative study of the vegetation and soils of an exclosure in the mountain brush vegetation of the Wasatch Mountains, Utah. The exclosure was fenced and initially analyzed during the summers of 1949-1950. The study area is located in Pole Canyon in the Uinta National Forest, a few miles northeast of Provo, Utah. The dominant woody species of the vegetation in the exclosure are big toothed maple (Acer grandidentatum) and Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii). After settlement of the area in and around Provo, Pole Canyon became overgrazed by livestock. Since 1949 the area has been protected from grazing. …
Introducing Aquatic Ecology To Ninth Graders, Inez P. Sutton
Introducing Aquatic Ecology To Ninth Graders, Inez P. Sutton
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
In discussing the basis for teaching high school biology, Van Deventer1 states, "...the present typical course in high school biology serves adequately neither the terminal student nor the college entrance student." He holds that today's courses present watered-down versions of college courses to the student before the intelligence of the student has matured enough to grasp such subject matter. As a result there is very little carry-over value from such courses, and the students may even develop a dislike for biology. This study constitutes an effort to understand these problems and to devise ways of solving …

Letter From Lawrence W. Quate To Dr. Jane C. Dirks-Edmunds, Lawrence W. Quate
Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Documents
This letter from Dr. Lawrence W. Quate is one of many such letters received by Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds. Dirks-Edmunds consulted a number of experts to help identify the specimens she collected while conducting fieldwork. Quate was an expert on midges, also known as psychodids. Many of the colleagues with whom Dirks-Edmunds corresponded resided far afield from her research site on Saddleback Mountain in Oregon.
Dirks-Edmunds, a 1937 graduate of Linfield College, graduated from the University of Illinois in 1941; she returned to teach in the Biology department at Linfield from 1941-1974.
The Aquatic Plants Of Central Utah And Their Distribution, Gerald E. Bessey
The Aquatic Plants Of Central Utah And Their Distribution, Gerald E. Bessey
Theses and Dissertations
It was the purpose of this study to determine what aquatic plants were common to central Utah and to outline the ecological factors that control their distribution. The main emphasis throughout has been upon the more macroscopic aquatic plants. Such algae were included as was warranted by their size,, abundance and importance in the various habitats in which they grew. As this study progressed it became evident that there was a need for a broad survey-type study of the aquatic plants that would include essentially all of the wet lands of the central Utah region. The area of study closely …

A Survey Of The Food Habits And Distribution Of The Fishes Of Tuckahoe Creek, Virginia, With Special Emphasis On Lepomis Macrochirus Rafinesque, David Andrew Flemer
Master's Theses
An integral part of the ecological study of any organism is a good understanding of the food relationships. Basic studies of the distribution and ecology of common fresh-water fishes are necessary before a more detailed analysis can be made of the fishes in a particular area. Lagler (1956) states that food habit studies help determine population levels, rates of growth, and condition of the fishes. He also concludes that they serve as a partial basis for determining the status of various predatory and competing forms. Raney (1942) states that an intelligent fishery management program depends heavily upon information gained through …

An Ecological Study Of The Bottom Fauna Of Bear Lake Idaho And Utah, Earl W. Smart
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In evaluating the potential ability of a lake to produce fish, probably no single standard is so important as an estimate of the amount of bottom fauna (Deevey and Bishop, 1942).
The study of the bottom fauna of Bear Lake was a part of the investigation of its limnology and fisheries, begun in 1952. This study was sponsored through federal monies made available through the Dingle-Johnson Act. The primary purpose of the study was to examine all the evidence in estimating the fish producing capacity of the lake. Bear Lake is the second largest fresh water lake in Utah but …
