Theses and Dissertations
During the spring seasons of 1967 and 1968 ecological studies were made of nesting Ferruginou.s Hawks (Buteo regalis) in a 325 square mile area in west-central Utah. In the springs of 1967 and 1968 a systematic search was conducted throughout the study area for Ferruginous Hawk nests. When active nests were located they were kept under observation throughout the study. The density of nesting pairs in 1967 and 1968 ranged from 7 to 15.4 square miles per pair. An annual seasonal displacement was exhibited, with Ferruginous Hawks being present in the study area only during the nesting season, which lasted …

Niche Differentiating Mechanisms In Two Sympatric Species Of Swallows, David Thomas Moody
Niche Differentiating Mechanisms In Two Sympatric Species Of Swallows, David Thomas Moody
All Master's Theses
The present study considers certain aspects of the ecologies of cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and bam swallows (Hirundo rustica) in an area of overlap, where both species are found nesting together and foraging over the same fields. Careful attention was given to foraging flight patterns, foraging elevations, and food consumed by each species in an effort to determine whether or not there is any evidence of competition for food resources. Aggressive interactions between the species were recorded, and the general timing of their nesting cycles was noted.

Marine Fungi Of Iceland: A Preliminary Account Of Ascomycetes, A. R. Cavaliere
Biology Faculty Publications
This paper reports, for the first time, 25 species of marine pyrenomycetes from Icelandic waters. Taxonomic notes are included for certain species.
Surtsey, a submarine volcanic upthrust off the south coast of Iceland (Thorarinsson, 1967), is a current center for cooperative geophysical, geochemical, and biological investigations on an international scale. The mycological portion of the total biological research effort of the Surtsey project has emphasized a survey of the marine and freshwater mycoflora on the mainland of Iceland itself as a necessary prerequisite to ecological studies on Surtsey. With the exception of two reports on aquatic phycomycetes (Larsen, 1931, and …

Daily Nest Opening And Closing Of The Ant Pogonomyrmex Californicus, Lynn R. Heath
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In a study of timing in this ant ten of the twelve nests which were observed opened synchronously in the morning and closed in the evening. However, one was never seen to close and another closed during the day and stayed open at night.
A seasonal progression was shown by later opening times and earlier closing times. Opening and closing temperatures at the surface of the ground and three inches deep showed no seasonal progression.
In most cases the days when the nests opened the earliest the temperatures at opening time were the highest.
Soon after nests had closed they …
Elevational Occurrence Of The Ticks Dermacentor Andersoni And Dermacentor Parumapertus In Utah County, Utah, William J. Despain
Elevational Occurrence Of The Ticks Dermacentor Andersoni And Dermacentor Parumapertus In Utah County, Utah, William J. Despain
Theses and Dissertations
Considerable research on ticks has been done since it was discovered that the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, was a principal vector of Rocky Mountain spotted fevero Additional disease agents of man are also transmitted by D. andersoni. This tick and a closely related species, Dermacentor parumapertus Neuman, occur commonly in Utah. The two species are often closely associated, although D. andersoni is believed to occur in the mountains, whereas D. parumapertus is in the desert valleys. Diseases affecting animals in nature are transmitted by ticks of both species. Consequently, any interaction between the two may be influential …
A Taxonomic And Ecological Survey Of The Algae Of Lilly Lake, Ann C. Palmer
A Taxonomic And Ecological Survey Of The Algae Of Lilly Lake, Ann C. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
A taxonomic and ecological survey of the algae of Lilly Lake in the Uinta Mountains, Utah, was carried on from June 1967 to November 1967. The lake is a typical acid bog lake with an average pH range of 4.5 to 6.9. Extremes of pH in the alkaline range were present due to additional factors. Algae identified included 96 genera and 208 species. These were found in many different types of microenvironmental niches. The main factors which limited the algae to definite areas of the lake were pH, water temperature, light available, and type of substrate. The predominant algal genera …

A Biosystematic Study Of The Genus Aconitum (Ranunculaceae) In The Intermountain Region, Rex Cates
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study dealt with the Intermountain aconites of which the chromosome number of n = 8 was obtained.
The bumblebees, Bombus rufocinctus Cresson, B. appositus Cresson, and B. centralis Cresson, are the major pollinators of the allogamous and autogamous aconites.
Two-dimensional thin layer chromatography of cauline leaf extracts showed that the Intermountain aconites studied here consist of one chemical group.
The overall evidence indicates that the Intermountain aconites consist of one species, Aconitum columbianum Nutt., with two varieties, variety columbianum and variety ochroleucum A. Nels.

Differences include: the establishment of Ferrcbacillus ferrooxidans, for which procedures were developed for direct colony isolation from the stream; fewer saprophytic bacteria; more numerous and more diversified filamentous and unicellular fungi; and characteristic differences in algal flora. Representatives of 42 genera of filamentous fungi were identified. Of these, 21 were isolated only from Cane Branch. Representatives of …
Prairie Plants And Their Environment, J. E. Weaver
Prairie Plants And Their Environment, J. E. Weaver
Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)
When, in 1916, the writer came to the University of Nebraska as a young instructor, he came with a background that well fitted him for studies in the field. His research in the grassland and adjoining forests of southeastern Washington and adjacent Idaho had been completed and a fine acquaintance had been made with methods of examining the prairie both above and below ground level (Weaver, 1915, 1917). Similar studies in the area between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains were now to be made, and these have resulted in many new investigations that are of both scientific and …

Parasites Of The Inshore Lizardfish, Synodus Foetens, From South Florida, Including A Description Of A New Genus Of Cestoda, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The parasites of the inshore lizardfish, Synodus foetens, were studied from collections taken from an estuarine canal in south Florida between January 1963 and December 1964. A new genus of Cestoda (Bothriocephalidae) has been erected with the proposed name Anantrum. Several larval and adult helminths and a dinoflagellate were studied from monthly samples of Synodus. Incidence of infection, intensity of infection, location of parasites in the host, and associations among parasites are discussed. Extensions of ranges for parasites in S. foetens and parasites heretofore not recorded from S. foetens are noted.

An Ecological Study Of Notoplana Acticola, A Polyclad Flatworm, In A Rocky Intertidal Habitat On The North Central California Coast, Alan Bradley Thum
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The taxonomy of the polyclad flatworms is fairly well-known and some attention has been given to study of their physiology. Investigations of an ecological nature, however, are scarce; in fact, no ecological studies have been made on the Pacific Coast of North America. Else- where, Pearse and Wharton (1938) investigated the general ecology of Stylochus frontalis, associated with oysters on the coasts of Florida, and occasional notes have appeared, reporting on polyclads as predators on oysters and barnacles (Book, 1925: Wolke, 1954; Loosanoff, 1956: Skerman,1960)

Annotated Checklist Of Bats From South Dakota, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Excepting the generalized accounts of Over and Churchill (1945), no attempt has been made previously to summarize the distribution of bats in South Dakota. In 1960, 1961, and again in 1965, field parties from the Museum of Natural History of The University of Kansas collected mammals in that state. Bats obtained by these parties, together with those on deposit in other institutions and the few specimens earlier reported from South Dakota by other workers (see cited literature), form the basis of the present report. Eleven species are here treated; two of these are represented in the state by two subspecies. …
