Food Of The Red Drum, Sciaenops Ocellata, From Mississippi Sound, Robin M. Overstreet, Richard W. Heard
Food Of The Red Drum, Sciaenops Ocellata, From Mississippi Sound, Robin M. Overstreet, Richard W. Heard
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Examined digestive tracts of the red drum in Mississippi Sound contained mostly decapod crustaceans. Crustaceans accounted for 34 of 59 encountered taxa, more than reported from any other region. Nevertheless, the general diet for 104 fish with food contents out of the 107 examined is similar to that reported for red drum in several other studies from other areas. In addition to crustaceans, fishes followed by polychaetes occurred as the most important items (in 99, 43, and 15% of the drum with food, respectively). Blue crabs occurred in even more drum than the frequently encountered penaeid shrimps. Other commercial species …

Epizoic Protozoa Of Planktonic Copepoda And Cladocera From A Small Eutrophic Lake, And Their Possible Use As Indicators Of Organic Water Pollution, Michael Stevens Henebry
Masters Theses
The epizoic protozoa of planktonic copepoda and cladocera from a eutrophic lake (Ashmore Lake, Coles County, Illinois) were studied over a 13-week period in the summer and fall of 1975. All organisms were collected with a 125 micron mesh plankton net. Epizoans (all peritrichs and suctorians) were hosted by three of four species of copepods and four of the ten species of cladocerans. The percentage of total organisms hosting epizoans varied significantly (0.001 alpha level) by month, but averaged 11.6 percent. This high occurrence of epizoans was thought to be related to the highly-eutrophic conditions existing in the lake. If …

As our knowledge of bivalves has increased, so has information about their parasites. Most studies of bivalve parasites have been devoted to groups infesting commercially important mollusks, notably trematodes and copepods. Another group of bivalve symbionts which has been known since the early nineteenth century is the brachyuran genus Pinnotheres Latreille, 1802 (commonly known as pea crabs). The generic name was given because of the belief that the crabs were predators upon the scallops in which they were most frequently found (Pearce, 1966). However, Stebbing (1893) suggested that instead of acting as predators, the crabs were in fact serving as …

Poecilancistrium Caryophyllum And Other Trypanorhynch Cestode Plerocercoids From The Musculature Of Cynoscion Nebulosus And Other Sciaenid Fishes In The Gulf Of Mexico, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Examination of over 3,000 fish, all sciaenids, has shown that plerocercoids of Poecilancistrium caryophyllum infect Cynoscion nebulosus, Bairdiella chrysura, Sciaenops ocellata, C. arenarius, Micropogonias undulatus, and Pogonias cromis in Mississippi Sound. In addition to P. caryophyllum, a pseudophyllidean-like trypanorhynch also infected C. nebulosus and M. undulatus. Pseudogrillotia pleistacantha selectively infected large P. cromis, Pterobothrium heteracanthum infected M. undulatus, and Pterobothrium lintoni infected Menticirrhus americanus. Prevalence and intensity of infections of P. caryophyllum in C. nebulosus from Mississippi, roughly 40% of the fish each possessing an average of about two worms, …

The Mammals Of Zion National Park With Emphasis On Ecology And Distribution Of Twelve Species Of Rodents, Paul A. Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Information concerning the mammals of Zion National Park was needed for management purposes and general information. During the summers of 1975 and 1976, mammals observed throughout the park were recorded and habitat structure was measured for each animal at the immediate observation site. Ordinations based on stepwise discriminant analyses of the data on 12 rodent species were constructed and substantiated by Bray-Curtis analyses. The results showed that amounts of cover and boulders contrasted the habitats of Peromyscus eremicus, P. maniculatus, P. crinitus, P. boylii and P. truei. A second group of species--Eutamias minimus, E. umbrinus, Spermophilus variegatus, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, Dipodomys …

The Distribution Of Orcuttia Californica (Poaceae) In The Vernal Pools Of The Santa Rosa Plateau, Riverside County, California, Cluney M. Stagg
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Ecological studies were conducted on the rare annual grass Orcuttia californica (Vasey), an endemic to California, from April to September, 1976 in 11 vernal pools located on the Santa Rosa Plateau in Riverside County. To help determine why Orcutt grass occurs in only 6 of the 11 pools and more specifically why it only occurs in patches within a given pool, biweekly measurements of frequency, density and phenology were taken within each of a total of 28 circular plots (r = 10 meters) in 5 pools. This data was related to concurrent biweekly measurements of soil moisture, soil texture and …

The Vegetation Of South Padre Island, Texas In Relation To Topography, Frank W. Judd, Robert I. Lonard, Sammie L. Sides
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Vegetation patterns were studied in relation to topography to ascertain the degree of phytosociological change and to provide an inventory of the vegetation of South Padre Island. Six major terrestrial topographic zones were recognized: (1) Foreshore, (2) Backshore, (3) Primary dunes, (4) Secondary dunes and vegetated flats, (5) Tidal flats, and (6) Washovers. The flora includes at least 204 species of angiosperms representing 47 families. Five families, Compositae (26), Cyperaceae (10), Gramineae (46), Leguminosae (24), and Scrophulariaceae (8), account for 55.9% of the species diversity. The vegetation occurs in distinct zones that correspond closely to topographic facets. Comparison of three …
The Intestinal Platyhelminths Of Southwestern And Central West Virginia Amphibia And Relationships Between The Degree Of Infestation And Habitat Of Amphibians And Sex Of Host, Stanley B. Mills
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In April and May, 1977, 397 (14 species) amphibians were collected from southwestern and central West Virginia and examined for parasites. Five species of trematodes and two species of cestodes were found from 93 hosts. The total of 397 amphibians was subdivided, for convenience, into six categories of amphibians; aquatic male and female, terrestro-aquatic male and female, and terrestrial male and female. Nine of 24 (37.5%). female aquatic amphibians was the highest incidence found, while terrestro-aquatic females contained the highest mean number (6.0) worms per incidence, and parasite loads of host. Hosts, each platyhelminth specimen are given.
Impact Of Dog Predation On Minnesota Whitetail Deer, Terry John Kreeger
Impact Of Dog Predation On Minnesota Whitetail Deer, Terry John Kreeger
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A survey was conducted among conservation officers in Minnesota to investigate predation by dogs (Canis familiaris) on the whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and the distribution of dog-killed deer within the state. Of the 124 conservation officers checked, 95 confirmed 407 deer killed by dogs from April 1, 1975, through March 31, 1976. Officers also received 1,483 complaints of dogs chasing deer and 626 dogs were destroyed in this activity. Ninety-four percent of these dogs were thought to be domestic, as opposed to feral. The effects of long-distance chases of deer by dogs, prey selectivity and the profile of the free-roaming …

Upland Nesting Of American Bitterns, Marsh Hawks, And Short-Eared Owls, Harold F. Duebbert, John T. Lokemoen
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Nests of American Bitterns (Botaurus lentiginosus), marsh hawks (Circus cyaneus), and short-eared owls (Asio flammeus) are usually found in wetland habitats. Although large marshes containing dense stands of bulrushes (Scirpus), cattails (Typha), or other wetland vegetation are favored nesting cover, these birds have also been reported to nest in stands of tall, dense shrubs and grasses on the upland (Bent 1961, 1963; Palmer 1962; Sealy 1967; Stewart 1975). During 1968-74, we regularly found upland nests of these three species while conducting duck nesting studies in planted fields of undisturbed grass-legume …

Blood Parasites Of Squirrels From Coles And Lake Counties In Illinois, Nicholas I. Obiri
Masters Theses
Hepatozoon and microfilariae are described from the blood of fox and gray squirrels captured in Coles and Lake Counties in Illinois during 1976 and 1977. The hepatozoon species is identified as Hepatozoon griseisciuri on the basis of parasite morphology and hosts. A higher rate of infection (35.7% : 11.1%) was observed in gray squirrels than in fox squirrels and more adults were infected than juveniles. No microfilariae were found in gray squirrels but fox squirrels had a 57.1% infection rate with no difference based on age. The observed microfilariae are similar to that described by Davidson from Maryland gray squirrels …

Rotifers In Lake Itasca, Judy Helgen
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Rotifers were collected from both the Littoral and Limnetic zones in Lake Itasca, Clearwater County, Minnesota, during two weeks in midsummer. In total, 82 species of rotifers were found, and 69 were identified to species. The littoral zone produced 67 species of rotifers, primarily associated with the aquatic macrophytes. While 35 species were collected in the limnetic zone, only 13 of them were restricted to that habitat. Species are listed by habitat and by type of plant on which they occurred.

Great Basin Naturalist
The riverbottom forest community of St. Mary River, Lee Creek, and Belly River in southwestern Alberta, Canada, is a unique ecological entity characterized by poplar species having their major Alberta distribution along these streams. Stands in the community are dominated by three tree species, six shrub species, and nine herb species. Establishment of the community is dependent on climate and substrate; destruction is the result of progressive lateral stream-flow erosion. Soils are sandy loams above gravel, with pH values of 7.7 to 8.0 and soluble salt concentrations of 176 to 458 parts per million. Trees in mature stands averaged 23.0 …
