A Survey Of The Effect Of Mineral Salts On Direct Dyeings, Lawrence R. Bortolotti May 1956

A Survey Of The Effect Of Mineral Salts On Direct Dyeings, Lawrence R. Bortolotti

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A study of the effect of various minerals salts on dyeings made with direct dyes. Dyes were chosen for their frequency of usage in the paper industry; the salts were chosen for several reasons, the prime one being that they form a floc at approximately the same pH as that of the stock run over the paper machine, also for its cost and availability. Sheets were made with the various dyes and salts in severals percentages of each dried, out up into test sheets for fading and bleeding. The test sheets were examined visually for evidence of fading and bleeding …

Impartial Evaluations Of The Printing Quality Of Paper, Warren R. Engel May 1956

Impartial Evaluations Of The Printing Quality Of Paper, Warren R. Engel

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Several methods for the evaluation of paper have been investigated for their desirability as means of an impartial evaluation of the printing quality of paper. The halftone plate method showed the most desired results as an impartial evaluation of both coated and uncoated papers. The printing gage was not found to be a satisfactory method of evaluation. The drawdown method is especially significant in evaluating properties which influence the printing quality but lacks a suitable numerical evaluation.

Forty Years Of Dairy Cattle Breeding At The North Platte Experiment Station, Mogens Plum, Myron G.A. Rumery May 1956

Forty Years Of Dairy Cattle Breeding At The North Platte Experiment Station, Mogens Plum, Myron G.A. Rumery

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In 1913 the Nebraska Legislature appropriated $17,500 to establish a Dairy Department at the North Platte Experiment Station. The department's herd was to be used in demonstrating management and breeding practices and as a source of breeding stock. Since the North Platte herd was started, research in the field of animal breeding has developed new concepts in many phases of dairy cattle breeding and selection. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the progress made under a system of dairy cattle breeding and selection carried out according to the principles that dominated 40 years ago. The results of …

Ecology Of Plant Distribution On The Salt-Deserts Of Utah, Dillard H. Gates May 1956

Ecology Of Plant Distribution On The Salt-Deserts Of Utah, Dillard H. Gates

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The reciprocal effects of vegetation and soils have long been a subject of speculation and conjecture. In the management of any natural land area the problem of interpreting vegetational expression is especially important. The effects of native vegetation on soils and the effects of the soil on the vegetation have been studied and observed for many years. The arid-desert range lands have been studied least and as a result are not well understood.

As human populations increase there will be additional need for agricultural production, and these lands may be put to higher use, perhaps even to irrigated crop production. …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Artificial insemination of dairy cattle has become a major part of the dairy industry during the past 15 years. There has been a steady increase in the number of cows serviced each year since the first artificial breeding association was organized in the United States in 1938. In 1952 there were 4,238,245 cows bred artificially. In 1953 there were 4,845,222 and in 1955, artificially bred cows numbered 5,250,000.

The Effect Of Bicarbonate On The Uptake Of Zinc By Plants, Lawrence G. Morrill May 1956

The Effect Of Bicarbonate On The Uptake Of Zinc By Plants, Lawrence G. Morrill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Zinc deficiencies occur in many fruit orchards in Utah even though the soil contains amounts of zinc that would normally be sufficient for good plant growth. The existing zinc problem in Utah is, therefore, one of availability.

Problems of zinc availability generally occur in the pH range of 6-8. Zinc deficiencies occurring within this pH range are more frequently found on well-aerated soils than on poorly aerated ones with other conditions being the same. It has been shown that carbon dioxide will convert both zinc hydroxide and zinc carbonate into more soluble bicarbonates with the concentration of Zn++ that …

A Farm Building Evaluation Technique For Tax Assessment, Joshua F. Robinson Apr 1956

A Farm Building Evaluation Technique For Tax Assessment, Joshua F. Robinson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The purpose of this study is to develop a technique which may be used to improve farm buildings assessment procedures in South Dakota, Since farm buildings contribute in varying amounts to farm productivity, they should be assessed in direct proportion to their contribution. Such a procedure should aid tax assessors to determine accurately the true valuation. The specific objectives of the study were (1) to determine the relationship between market price and soil productivity for use in assessment of farm real estate; (2) to establish a ratio of the market value of buildings to land; and (3) to develop a …

Some Effects Of Inorganic Fluoride On Plants, Animals, And Man, Delbert A. Greenwood

Faculty Honor Lectures

~~~ in the compounds of fluorine may be traced to one or more of the following factors: ( 1) the consumption of a drinking water containing one part per million of fluorine as a soluble flouride during the period of calcification and eruption of the teeth causes a reduction in the incidence of tooth decay; however, an intake of drinking water containing more than two parts per million of fluorine causes dental fluorosis of varying degrees in man and certain animals; (2) a continuous intake of excessive amounts of fluorine as mineral supplement, in contaminated forage, or the grazing of …
Bulletin No. 382 - Grass-Legume Mixtures For Irrigated Pastures For Dairy Cows, George Q. Bateman, Wesley Keller Mar 1956
Bulletin No. 382 - Grass-Legume Mixtures For Irrigated Pastures For Dairy Cows, George Q. Bateman, Wesley Keller
UAES Bulletins
Pastures have been important in the agricultural economy of the Intermountain Region. But as long as nearby valley bottom or other land not well suited for cultivation was available, the pressure for better irrigated pastures remained secondary to that for improved cash crops.
Only in recent years have dairymen generally realized that a productive herd, coupled with proper management, could make a good pasture a highly profitable crop. Bateman and Packer pointed out in 1945 this concept of pastures. Bateman et al. using newer mixtures strikingly verified the concept in 1949 and 1954. The growing awareness of the value …
Determination Of Copper In Lead And Lead Base Alloys, Mcgee A. Duff, Charles T. Kenner Jan 1956
Determination Of Copper In Lead And Lead Base Alloys, Mcgee A. Duff, Charles T. Kenner
Field and Laboratory
This work was undertaken in an effort to develop a rapid method for the determination of copper in the range of 0.01 to 0.06% in lead alloys and in the range of 0.001 to 0.005% in lead. A visual and a photometric method are suggested, based on the color developed by copper in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Iron interferes with the determination, but this interference is reduced by use of an aluminum file in the visual method, and is corrected for in the photometric method by determination of the Lron as the thiocyanate. The visual method is very rapid, is accurate …
A Review Of Pertinent Literature On The Thyroid Of Urodela, With Special Reference To Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr. Jan 1956
A Review Of Pertinent Literature On The Thyroid Of Urodela, With Special Reference To Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.
Field and Laboratory
The discovery by Gudernatsch (53) of the role of the thyroid in the control of metamorphosis in amphibia quickened interest in this field, with the result that an overwhelming number of papers has appeared since 1912 on the thyroid gland and its functions in amphibia and other cold-blooded vertebrates. Much of the literature has been reviewed elsewhere (75), and a complete analysis of all the publications will not be attempted here. The present review concerns, primarily, those papers dealing with the thyroid gland of Necturus; as also, secondarily, some papers treating of other animals, which were important in the development …
