Acute Effects Of Acetazoleamide (Diamox) Administration On Pulmonary Carbon Dioxide Exchange In Humans, George G. Burton Jun 1960

Acute Effects Of Acetazoleamide (Diamox) Administration On Pulmonary Carbon Dioxide Exchange In Humans, George G. Burton

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous studies dealing with the effects of oral acetazoleamide (DiamoxR) administration in humans have yielded equivocal results. Effects of intravenous administration of this agent, a potent carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, have not been studied until recently. It is postulated that difficulty in interpreting these results has risen in part from failure to evaluate given parameters in terms of drug concentrations or degree of carbonic anhydrase inhibition achieved.

These concentrations were ascertained throughout the present work of this Thesis, which deals with the effects of both small and large doses of this agent upon ventilatory parameters in man.

In these …

4-H Handicraft Guide : Metal Craft, Henrietta Gohrig, Ivan Sundal May 1960

4-H Handicraft Guide : Metal Craft, Henrietta Gohrig, Ivan Sundal

SDSU Extension Circulars

Metalcraft is an art that dates back mamy centuries, yet always proves to be very fascinating and practical. Metals most commonly tooled are aluminum, copper, and brass. The tooling of thin sheets of these materials is a craft that may be done by a first grader or a skilled craftsman. Annealed (softened) metals are best for hand tooling. The desirable thickness varies from 40 gauge to 34 gauge; 36 gauge is most commonly used. The metals are rolled into coils, and are sold by the lineal foot. They can be cut to the desirable size by household shears. The coils …

A Comparison Of Daughters Of Sires In Artificial Breeding At Different Levels Of Management, Richard C. Cook May 1960

A Comparison Of Daughters Of Sires In Artificial Breeding At Different Levels Of Management, Richard C. Cook

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the largest problems facing the successful dairyman of today is selection of proper sires to mate to his high producing cows. Many breeders and dairymen have the impression that proven sires will give the same increase in production regardless of the dam's production or the level of environment present. Even though sires come from high producing herds, some as high as 600 pounds of butterfat, the average production of all cows in the state of Utah remains at a much lower figure. The average for all cows in Utah is about 250 pounds of butterfat and the average …

The Influence Of Soil Moisture Suction And Evaporative Demand On Actual Evapotranspiration And Yield Of Alfalfa, Bozorg Bahrani May 1960

The Influence Of Soil Moisture Suction And Evaporative Demand On Actual Evapotranspiration And Yield Of Alfalfa, Bozorg Bahrani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Evapotranspiration has been defined as the combination of evaporation of water from the soil surface and transpiration of water by vegetation. If the ground is well covered by plants, most of the water is lost by transpiration of water directly from the plant tissue, rather than by evaporation of water directly from the soil surface. The term consumptive use is synonymous with evapotranspiration.

The Inhibitory Effects Of Tarweed Upon The Germination And Growth Of Seedlings, Glenn F. Carnahan May 1960

The Inhibitory Effects Of Tarweed Upon The Germination And Growth Of Seedlings, Glenn F. Carnahan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Extensive areas of potentially productive but depleted range land in the United States are occupied by a weed commonly known aa cluster tarweed (Madia glomerata). Moat attempts at seeding these areas to useful forage plants have resulted in failure. Many of these failures have been attributed to the vigorous competitive growth of tarweed plants. More recent observations of seedings in tarweed areas and laboratory work at the University of Utah indicate that tarweed is not only a strong competitor but may also produce substances which inhibit the germination and growth of other species of plants.

Influence Of Moisture And Nitrogen Levels And Harvest Interval On Water Requirement Of Two Genotypes Of Orchardgrass, William W. Wagner May 1960

Influence Of Moisture And Nitrogen Levels And Harvest Interval On Water Requirement Of Two Genotypes Of Orchardgrass, William W. Wagner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the semi-arid west, moisture is often the limiting factor in plant growth. High crop production is dependent upon rainfall and supplemental moisture supplied through irrigation. Plants for these areas, which are most efficient in use of water, other things being equal, would be more desirable.

The Effect Of Feeding Various Levels Of Fluoride To Dairy Cattle On Their Pepsin Activity, Hassan Sabeti-Rahmati May 1960

The Effect Of Feeding Various Levels Of Fluoride To Dairy Cattle On Their Pepsin Activity, Hassan Sabeti-Rahmati

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In certain industrial areas fluorides are present in various amounts in the atmosphere. These fluorides are liberated by industrial processes at high temperature in treatment of materials containing fluoride, either as a natural impurity, or as added material for technical purposes. Equipment and procedures have been installed in many plants to reduce the output of fluorides significantly, yet forage and hay grown near the plants may contain elevated amounts of fluorides. The feeding of such material to young livestock for many months may cause fluorosis or chronic fluoride poisoning. Some springs contain a high concentration of fluorides and the continuous …

A Quantitative Study Of Sexual Behavior Of Mallards And Black Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard Apr 1960

A Quantitative Study Of Sexual Behavior Of Mallards And Black Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

In recent years an increased interest in the use of behavioral characteristics in evolutionary studies has developed, and this is particularly true in the case of waterfowl. The classical studies of Heinroth (1911), who was one of the first to apply knowledge of waterfowl behavior to systematics, have been elaborated on by Lorenz (1941; 1951-1953) in his important contribution toward the understanding of relationships in the Anatinae. These, and other, studies have stressed the qualitative behavioral differences occurring among different species as providing possible isolating mechanisms through their presumed function of conveying species-specific recognition signals. To the present, no extensive …

An Economic Analysis Of The Effects Of Alternative Shearing Methods On Wool Quality In Eastern South Dakota, Gerald E. Marousek Mar 1960

An Economic Analysis Of The Effects Of Alternative Shearing Methods On Wool Quality In Eastern South Dakota, Gerald E. Marousek

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The lack of information relating the quality of the wool clip at the farm to its value to the manufacturer has been recognized for several years. The following objectives were set out as a means of guiding the study of wool quality improvement in eastern South Dakota: To determine the theoretical effects of improved methods of shearing and handling wool on quantities produced, prices received, apportionment of benefits between producers and consumers, farm resource allocation, producers' bargaining power, and marketing costs; to develop and test practical methods of farm preparation of fleeces which could be expected to improve the quality …

4-H Handicraft Guide : Leather Craft, Ima Crisman, Frank Heitland Jan 1960

4-H Handicraft Guide : Leather Craft, Ima Crisman, Frank Heitland

SDSU Extension Circulars

Leather craft is both fascinating and functional. There are three primary ways to decorate leather - tooling, carving, and stamping. Beginners should select a simple project to learn the techniques without investing a great amount in leather or equipment. The design should be free from complicated lines; yet it should be appropriate for the article being tooled. Many leather companies have designs made especially for a particular article. Calfskin and tooling sheepskin are the best leathers for tooling. Cowhide can be used for carving and stamping.

Distribution Of Latex In Impregnated Paper, Donald Ward Nay Jan 1960

Distribution Of Latex In Impregnated Paper, Donald Ward Nay

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Introduction

Impregnation of paper products first began in the early 1920's. It became an important aspect of the industry during World War II when several factors came together to provide the basis for its growth. First of all, the development of synthetic materials provided many new agents with new properties in which to impregnate with. New equipment available at this same time made application and control of the process much easier. To put the drive in the new area, there simultaneously occurred a realization of many new products that impregnated papers could provide. The most important of those during World …

Enzymatic Sulfurylation Mechanisms, Irving Hyman Goldberg Jan 1960

Enzymatic Sulfurylation Mechanisms, Irving Hyman Goldberg

Student Theses and Dissertations

Sulfate activation and transfer to lipids, polysaccharides, and aminoalkyl phenols have been studied In a variety of biological systems. The transfer of S35O4 from radioactive 3'-phosphoadenoslne 5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS35) into lipid-soluble material has been investigated in cell-free preparations of rat brain and liver. In brain of 10-20 day old rats activity was found in the particulate fraction of the homogenate, whereas in young adult rat liver activity resided in the supernatant fraction (105,000 x g). In both systems incorporation was stimulated by the addition of a crude mixture of the isomers of N-acetyl sphingosine. Evidence accumulated …
