Light Lands In Western Australia. 1. History And Future Prospects, F L. Shier

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

BECAUSE of the scattered distribution of light lands of the agricultural areas of Western Australia among the better soils, and their large total area, it is not surprising that attempts to develop these unattractive soils for agriculture started many years ago.

Studies On Parorchis Acanthus (Trematoda: Digenea) As A Biological Control For The Southern Oyster Drill, Thais Haemastoma, Nelson R. Cooley

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Events in the attack on the southern oyster drill, Thais haemastoma, by miracidia of the digenetic trematode, Parorchis acanthus, are described.

Infection rates in wild drill populations of various Gulf Coast localities from Florida to Texas were low, but intensity of infection in individual drills was high and caused castration. Infection rates in laboratory experiments were high, but intensities were low.

Pathology of natural infections in drills is described. The infection lasts at least two years, possibly even for life.

Natural infection rates of juvenile herring gulls (Larus argentatus) , ring-billed gulls (L. delawarensis), and …

The Chaetognaths Of The Dillon Beach Area And Their Possible Use As Indicators Of Water Movements, Roby Ward Renshaw

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In August, 1959, Pacific Marine Station became an active participant in the California Co-operative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (C.C.O.F.I.). The program began in 1949 as an investigation of factors that might be associated with the disappearance of the California Sardine. Since that time, the general scope and purpose has broadened, and new information about the coastal water of California has been obtained. With each passing year, more information is being gathered and put to use. Participation in this program by Pacific Marine Station has consisted of taking monthly oceanographic observations near the head of Bodega Submarine Canyon, twenty-five miles west of …

Massive Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage Originating From The Cecum, C. Grodsinsky, B. E. Brush

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Six cases are reported of arterio-venous malformations of the cecum presenting with hemorrhage. Newer techniques of diagnosis and management are reviewed. These cases are of interest because of their relative uniqueness and clinical importance. The diagnosis of underlying disease in these cases is often difficult. Massive bleeding, if not controlled, is an indication for immediate operation. Recurrent bleeding, even if previously controlled, can also be considered a surgical indication.

A Reappraisal Of The Relationship Between Free And Bound Coumarin In Melilotus, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz Sep 1961

A Reappraisal Of The Relationship Between Free And Bound Coumarin In Melilotus, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In early work on coumarin in sweetclover, the assumption was made that the free form of the compound predominated in the intact plant. Subsequent investigations demonstrated the presence of bound coumarin in addition to free, and it was then thought that both forms were normally present. Recent work indicates that when suitable extraction procedures are used, virtually all the coumarin is obtained in the bound form. Such extraction procedures must provide for the rapid inactivation of β-glucosidase, thus preventing the hydrolysis of bound coumarin (apparently the glucoside of cis-o-hydroxycinnamic acid) during the extraction process. In the present study, inactivation …

Enjoy Christmas Music, Kay Sharp Nelson Aug 1961

Enjoy Christmas Music, Kay Sharp Nelson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Christmas not only affects the family unit internally but also relates it to the community. Many families have developed their own personal traditions. They attend church activities together; they have special festive occasions; home and tree decorations often represent certain incidents or memories to cherish. The philosophy of "doing-for-others" grows stronger at Christmas time.

Introducing Aquatic Ecology To Ninth Graders, Inez P. Sutton Jul 1961

Introducing Aquatic Ecology To Ninth Graders, Inez P. Sutton

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

In discussing the basis for teaching high school biology, Van Deventer1 states, "...the present typical course in high school biology serves adequately neither the terminal student nor the college entrance student." He holds that today's courses present watered-down versions of college courses to the student before the intelligence of the student has matured enough to grasp such subject matter. As a result there is very little carry-over value from such courses, and the students may even develop a dislike for biology. This study constitutes an effort to understand these problems and to devise ways of solving …

Evaluation Of Hydroxyprogesterone Acetate In The Prevention Of Canine Estrus, Kenneth B. Haas Jul 1961

Evaluation Of Hydroxyprogesterone Acetate In The Prevention Of Canine Estrus, Kenneth B. Haas

Masters Theses

Foreword

Thirty years ago, endocrinology was a laboratory curiosity appreciated by few veterinarians. In those rare instances when the new science escaped from the laboratory and reached the clinic, the endocrine preparations used were extremely crude and often ineffective. In the growth of endocrinology as a science, availability of pure crystalline hormones has played an essential role, and to chemical synthesis must be credited the preparations which make specific endocrine therapy possible today.

In the last two decades endocrinology has come into its own in veterinary medicine, especially in regard to sex endocrinology. But only in the last ten years …

"A Study Of A Method To Predict Printing Quality Of Paper By Means Of Smoothness And Elongation Test Results", William R. Castle Jun 1961

"A Study Of A Method To Predict Printing Quality Of Paper By Means Of Smoothness And Elongation Test Results", William R. Castle

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The object of this thesis is to investigate the use of smoothness and elongation test results as criterion for evaluating the printing quality of paper. The relationship of smoothness and printing quality has been known for many years and in all previous work it has been shown to be influential to printing quality. The relationship of elongation and printing quality has never been investigated. The experimental procedure consisted of testing the paper samples for smoothness and elongation, and determining the printing quality of the different papers with the I. G. T. Printability Tester. The results of the analysis of the …

The Effect Of Chlorine, Hypochlorite, And Chlorine Dioxide Bleaching On The Hemicellulose Content Of Pulp, C. Wesley Smith Jun 1961

The Effect Of Chlorine, Hypochlorite, And Chlorine Dioxide Bleaching On The Hemicellulose Content Of Pulp, C. Wesley Smith

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Until the recent time hemicelluloses were regarded as an undesirable part of the cellulose fiber; the most desirable fiber for paper-making purposes was believed to be one containing 100% pure cellulose. This theory is fallacious, since it is now known that hemicellulose plays a major role in paper-making and in fact, a satisfactory paper cannot be formed from wood pulp without some hemicellulosic material being present. The best pulp is one which has been cooked to remove most of the lignin, but not so drastically cooked as to degrade the cellulose or remove too much of the hemicellulose fraction. Such …
