Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Since the 1980s, rare earth elements (REE), particularly gadolinium (Gd) used in gadolinium-based contrast agents (GdCA), have revolutionized Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) diagnostics. However, the near-complete persistence of these compounds through wastewater treatment processes has led to widespread global environmental contamination. Here, we present a global assessment of REE concentrations and GdCA signatures in tap water from 148 cities across 89 countries and Antarctica, where anthropogenic Gd ranges from 0.1 to 61.2 ng L–1 and accounts for up to 99% of total dissolved Gd. Contamination hotspots are concentrated in Europe and North America. While Gd levels scale with MRI usage …

Consumer Judgment, Choice, And Meaning-Making In Food Packaging Design From The Perspective Of Consumption Alienation, Guo Jingzhi, Xu Ming

Food and Machinery

In the context of contemporary food consumption, food packaging has gradually shifted from a tool for product protection and information transmission to an important cognitive interface that influences consumer perception, judgment, and choice. Existing studies in this field mainly focus on functional optimization, behavioral guidance, and cultural expression, while insufficient attention has been paid to how packaging design affects consumer cognitive processes. This paper introduces the theoretical perspective of consumption alienation and employs literature analysis and comparative case studies to construct a three-layer analytical framework of “judgment–choice–meaning.” Furthermore, it proposes a regression-based analytical pathway centered on comprehensibility, choice support, and …

The spatial and energetic encoding of allosteric regulatory sites remains a major challenge in structural biology, frequently representing a “blind spot” for sequence-based artificial intelligence (AI) models. We present a protein language model (PLM)-guided approach complemented by the energy landscape frustration analysis as a dual-stream framework to investigate the relationship between AI prediction of binding sites and biophysical organization of regulatory pockets across the human kinome. By probing a fine-tuned residue-level PLM classifier across 453 kinase structures, a clear performance gap is discovered between highly predictable orthosteric pockets (Types I, I.5, and II) and poorly resolved distal allosteric sites (Type …

Proteins contain small pockets that form due to imperfections in residue packing or the rotational and conformational movement of amino acids. In this work, we used the fluorescent probe 1-aminoanthracene (AMA) to detect a small ligand pocket in the hydrophobic core of human proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), which is a critical protein for DNA replication and repair. Fluorescence measurements of AMA reported that the core of PCNA had a dielectric constant (ε) of 4, which was very apolar and similar to cyclohexane (ε = 2). Protein mutagenesis, photoaffinity labeling, and molecular dynamics simulations localized the binding site for AMA …

Nanoscale Morphological Perturbations Of Lipid Membranes Induced By Membrane Active Peptides, Yasith Sandeepa Indigahawela Gamage

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Membrane-active peptides (MAPs) are a diverse group of biologically relevant molecules that induce nanoscale modulations during their interactions with cell membranes. Understanding the precise mechanism by which these MAPs perturb or modulate the cell membranes is a cornerstone of membrane biophysics, as it facilitates rational design of useful therapeutics. That is, if we have the knowledge to determine what the peptide can do, how selective it is, or how toxic it might be, we can optimize them and design new peptide therapeutics such as for antimicrobial, anticancer, or drug-delivery applications. In general, MAPs can be categorized into two classes based …
