The Plio-Pleistocene: Sediments, Environments, And Geochronology Along The Karari Escarpment, East Turkana, Kenya, Carl F. Vondra, Daniel R. Burggraf Jr., Howard J. White Jan 1978

The Plio-Pleistocene: Sediments, Environments, And Geochronology Along The Karari Escarpment, East Turkana, Kenya, Carl F. Vondra, Daniel R. Burggraf Jr., Howard J. White

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The sedimentary sequence of East Turkana, Kenya, provides an excellent opportunity to document change contemporary with the Plio-Pleistocene boundary in East Africa. Within exposures along the Karari Ridge, sediments of the Fluvio-lacustrine Koobi Fora Formation record a dramatic change in depositional regime from low to high energy attributable to climate change and/or tectonic activity. The correlation of this abrupt transition with the beginning of the Pleistocene epoch is not without question, but controversy resulting from radiometric dating of volcanic ash units, paleomagnetic zonation, and paleontologic data exists and indicates that resolution of the Plio-Pleistocene boundary at East Turkana will be …

The Middle Missouri Tradition In Retrospect, Warren W. Caldwell

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The "culture history" of the Missouri trench in North and South Dakota has been phrased in climatological parameters. The life cycle of the Middle Missouri Tradition in particular seems to correlate closely with the Neo-Atlantic eposide, yet the interpretation is speculatory because appropriate climatic data are not available.

Prehistoric Cremations From Nogales, Arizona *, Karl J. Reinhard, Jeff H. Shipman Jan 1978

Prehistoric Cremations From Nogales, Arizona *, Karl J. Reinhard, Jeff H. Shipman

Karl Reinhard Publications

In October, 1969, the Highway Salvage Section of the Arizona State Museum conducted emergency salvage excavations in conjunction with the construction of the Tucson-Nogales Highway. Ten cremations were recovered from a backhoe trench which had been placed within the city limits of Nogales, Arizona. Analysis of the cremations indicated cultural contact between the Trincheras culture of Sonora, Mexico, and the Hohokam culture of the Santa Cruz River Valley in southern Arizona.

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn Jul 1977

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Anthropological interest in human exploitation of resources has increased considerably during the last decade. Archaeological and ethnological literature concerning man's utilization of the world's oceans is relatively abundant and there are now several on-going anthropological research programs, e.g., Aleutian Islands, Pacific Northwest Coast, California, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Southern Africa which focus primarily on maritime adaptations. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to suggest that anthropological assumptions regarding marine food resources and their use are inadequate; (2) to examine marine ecosystems with respect to structure and dynamics, primary productivity, ecological efficiencies, distributional and quantitative …

Larval Cestode Parasites Of Edible Mollusks Of The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, Edwin W. Cake Jr. Jan 1977

Larval Cestode Parasites Of Edible Mollusks Of The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, Edwin W. Cake Jr.

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Ten distinct species of larval cestodes were obtained from 43 edible, or potentially edible, benthic mollusks of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Three of the infected mollusks, American oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin), Atlantic bay scallops, Argopecten irradians concentricus (Say), and sunray venus clams, Macrocallista nimbosa (Lightfoot), are important commercial species in the eastern Gulf and the remainder are occasionally eaten by epicurean shellfishermen or were consumed by prehistoric, aboriginal Indians of the Gulf coast. The cestodes represent four orders, seven families and nine recogized genera and include the trypanorhynchs, Euteirarhynchus sp. (of Cake 1975) and Parachristianella sp. (of Cake 1975), …

Two Possible Source Areas For The Quartzite Artifacts Of The Hudson-Meng Site -- A Comparative Study, Frank Witzel, John Hartley Oct 1976

Two Possible Source Areas For The Quartzite Artifacts Of The Hudson-Meng Site -- A Comparative Study, Frank Witzel, John Hartley

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Quartzites from quarries at Flint Hill, South Dakota and Spanish Diggings, Wyoming were examined using a binocular and petrographic microscope. A textural difference was discovered between material from the two quarries. Artifacts and debitage from the Hudson-Meng site (25 S x 115) was then examined and compared with quarry material. Tentative quarry affinities have been assigned to a portion of the Hudson-Meng collection.

The Newsletter Committee has succeeded in documenting departmental activities in an outstanding manner. All of us in the department appreciate the wonderful efforts and many hours spent by the Newsletter Committee: Brett Ratcliffe, Ron Rivers, Bruce Monke, Tim Miller and particularly the leadership of Lyle Klostermeyer as Committee Chairman. The typing assistance of our secretarial staff is greatly appreciated. The many changes in personnel and programs that have taken place during the period since the 1968 publication of Departmental Newsletter No.3 are well covered in various sections of the newsletter. Biological Inventory Of The Southern Nevada Water Project, Second Stage, W. Glen Bradley, J. Scott Miller Jan 1976

Biological Inventory Of The Southern Nevada Water Project, Second Stage, W. Glen Bradley, J. Scott Miller

Publications (WR)

The present report is a biological inventory of the Southern Nevada Water Project, Second Stage. The boundaries of the project encompass sections of North Las Vegas, Las Vegas, East Las Vegas and areas along Las Vegas Wash extending to its drainage point in Las Vegas Bay in Lake Mead. Therefore, it encompasses a wide array of ecological situations and landscapes ranging from essentially natural to various stages of urban development.

This biological inventory presents basic ecological classifications, descriptions of vegetation, lists of vascular plants and vertebrates known to occur in the area. Each major group, i.e., plants, fish, amphibians, reptiles, …

Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr. Dec 1975

Tobacco Farming: The Persistence Of Tradition, Eugene Umberger Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The culture of tobacco has been associated with the history of Kentucky almost from the beginning and remains to this day a vital force in the state’s economy. In this age of scientific and technological advances – of increasing automation – we find that in tobacco farming, hand labor still figures prominently in the production of a major staple crop. This has resulted in the retention of traditional method, technology and terminology, long since lost in the culture of other crops which lent themselves more easily to mechanization.

The study is divided into three parts. Chapter I deals briefly with …
