Systematics And Population Ecology Of Late Pleistocene Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Of Natural Trap Cave, Wyoming, Xiaoming Wang Jan 1988

Systematics And Population Ecology Of Late Pleistocene Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Of Natural Trap Cave, Wyoming, Xiaoming Wang

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Large numbers of Late Pleistocene bighorn sheep (total counts of identifiable elements: 4,497) Ovis canadensis. are described from the Natural Trap Cave, northern Wyoming. The specimens consist of nearly-intact skulls and enough post-cranial materials to assemble several complete sheep skeletons. Most of the fossils yield radiocarbon dates from 12,000 to 21,000 BP, while the oldest are more than 110,000 years old as dated by the fission-track method on the volcanic ash. The specimens resemble modern bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in having shallow lachrymal fossae and relatively wide rostra. in contrast to the Asian argali (Ovis ammon …

Suggestions Regarding Alcoholic Bird Collections, Peter F. Cannell, Murray R. Bakst, Cheryl S. Asa Jan 1988

Suggestions Regarding Alcoholic Bird Collections, Peter F. Cannell, Murray R. Bakst, Cheryl S. Asa

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

One third of the known species of birds are unrepresented in alcoholic collections and nearly 70% of the rest are represented by 10 or fewer specimens (Wood et al. 1982, Zusi et al. 1982). Simply put, "existing anatomical specimens do not meet present and future research needs and . .. the situation must be corrected" (Jenkinson and Wood 1985:587). Actually, current alcoholic specimen resources may be even worse than indicated by Wood et al. (1982), despite commendable recent improvements. Here, we argue the urgent need for additional alcoholic specimens, stressing in particular quality of fixation, the importance of series, documentation …

A Review Of Methodology And Quantification In Dental Microwear Analysis, K. D. Gordon Dec 1987

A Review Of Methodology And Quantification In Dental Microwear Analysis, K. D. Gordon

Scanning Microscopy

Dental microwear analysis is a method of inferring oral events (primarily food processing and aspects of masticatory biomechanics) from microscopic abrasion patterns retained on the enamel surfaces of teeth. Although some qualitative pattern differences may be easily distinguishable, most of the significant results produced thus far have derived from quantified studies of SEM images of occlusal enamel. It often goes unnoticed by readers of microwear reports who are not themselves specialists that microwear analysis is essentially a statistical method, not a visual one. In this review of current techniques and methods, several problems in current approaches are detailed. It is …

A Review Of Dental Microwear And Diet In Modern Mammals, Mark F. Teaford Dec 1987

A Review Of Dental Microwear And Diet In Modern Mammals, Mark F. Teaford

Scanning Microscopy

Recent work has shown that microscopic wear patterns on teeth may yield insights into variations in diet and tooth use in modern and prehistoric mammals. This paper presents a review of dental microwear and diet in modern mammals, plus a discussion of topics for further research. To date, incisor and molar microwear have been examined, although there are far fewer studies of the former. Facilitated by the use of high-resolution casts and scanning electron microscopy, analyses have ranged from: qualitative to quantitative, low magnification to high magnification, and experimental studies to comparative studies of museum collections. Results are encouraging and …

Tandem Scanning Reflected Light Microscopy Of Primate Enamel, Alan Boyde, Lawrence Martin Aug 1987

Tandem Scanning Reflected Light Microscopy Of Primate Enamel, Alan Boyde, Lawrence Martin

Scanning Microscopy

Studies of the cross sectional packing arrangements of primate enamel prisms have been used in a number of recent studies in attempts to determine their taxonomic utility. Credibility of the results has been greatly influenced by the methods employed to examine enamel prism packing patterns and also by the limited sampling. We report here the use of a technique for the non destructive examination, in depth, of enamel prism packing patterns in modern and fossil primate teeth which has considerable advantages over any others so far used, and the preliminary results of a survey of enamel structural diversity in the …

Tooth Enamel Structure In The Koala, Phascolarctos Cinereus: - Some Functional Interpretations, William G. Young, Maria Mcgowan, Terrence J. Daley

Scanning Microscopy

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the structural organization of Pattern 2 marsupial enamel in the Koala is disposed to resist wear on the sectorial crests of the molar teeth. The orientation of wear on the crests is uniformly delineated by parallel scratches on their polished surfaces. Twin blades, a leading and a trailing edge of enamel are formed on each crest by wear into dentine on which the differential wear at enamel to dentine interfaces indicates that the direction of wear is labial to lingual.

96 leading and trailing edges from 12 koala molars were examined …

Cracks In Fossil Enamels Resulting From Premortem Vs. Postmortem Events, John M. Rensberger Feb 1987

Cracks In Fossil Enamels Resulting From Premortem Vs. Postmortem Events, John M. Rensberger

Scanning Microscopy

Vertebrate enamel preserves a record of fracture-producing strain. Fracturing during the life of the individual is potentially a source of selection for stronger enamel in the course of evolution. To determine if it is possible to recognize such fractures in fossil enamel, cracks in a variety of fossil materials, including enamel-covered holostean scales, crocodilian teeth, theropod and hadrosaurid dinosaur teeth, and mammalian teeth were examined. Cracks that occurred during the life of the individual could be recognized by abrasive wear on edges exposed at the surface of the enamel in areas worn by oral or locomotor abrasion. Certain distinctive crack …

Intsormil Annual Report 1987, John M. Yohe, Timothy T. Schilling

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

The Sorghum/Millet CRSP was initiated on July 1, 1979. This annual report covers the activities for program Year 8. Eight years of experience have reaffirmed the need for this type of research program aimed at relieving the constraints to improved sustainable sorghum/millet production in developing countries. The emphasis by the CRSP on development of collaborative linkages with national sorghum/millet research programs has been unique. Significant contributions have been made toward resolving constraint problems and enhancing the national program capability by strengthening its human resource base as well as the national institutional capability to conduct collaborative research. Thus, the CRSPs present …

Helminth Remains From Prehistoric Indian Coprolites On The Colorado Plateau, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly, Glenn A. Anderson Jan 1987

Helminth Remains From Prehistoric Indian Coprolites On The Colorado Plateau, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly, Glenn A. Anderson

Karl Reinhard Publications

Examination of coprolites excavated from archaeological sites in the Americas demonstrates excellent preservation of helminth eggs and, in some cases, larvae. To gain an understanding of helminth parasitism in prehistory on the Colorado Plateau of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, 319 coprolites from 5 archaeological sites were analyzed. Helminth eggs and larvae were recovered after the coprolites were rehydrated, screened, and sedimented. At a sixth site, soils excavated from 5 rooms used as latrine areas were processed with palynological techniques. The results indicate that all but 1 of the prehistoric populations examined were infected with intestinal worms. The helminths implicated …

The Scanning Electron Microscopy/Replica Technique And Recent Applications To The Study Of Fossil Bone, Timothy G. Bromage Dec 1986

The Scanning Electron Microscopy/Replica Technique And Recent Applications To The Study Of Fossil Bone, Timothy G. Bromage

Scanning Microscopy

The SEM/replica technique employs high resolution replica materials in order to reflect microstructural details of specimens, such as fossil bones, which cannot be observed directly. The described technique is simple, provides excellent resolution, is maximally adaptable to field and laboratory settings, and is applicable to large and topographically complex bone surfaces. The advent of the technique has made it largely possible to address certain issues in anthropology and paleontology. These contributions have principally been concerned with taphonomy as the study of the bone damage process, and bone biology as it relates to bone growth remodeling processes characterizing the facial growth …

Quantitative Analysis Of Occlusal Microwear In Australopithecus And Paranthropus, Frederick E. Grine Dec 1986

Quantitative Analysis Of Occlusal Microwear In Australopithecus And Paranthropus, Frederick E. Grine

Scanning Microscopy

Quantitative analysis of microwear features preserved on the occlusal surfaces of the M2s of southern African specimens of Australopithecus and Paranthropus (the so-called 'gracile' and 'robust' australopithecines) reveals that there is no striking relationship in either taxon between occlusal facet inclination and the incidence of wear features. Within each taxon, Phase I and Phase II facets tend to differ in a similar manner in the total number of wear features, the percentage frequency of pitting, and in the orientation of wear scratches. Nevertheless, Paranthropus molars tend to display significantly greater numbers of microwear features on both Phase I …

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Early Dinosaur Egg Shell Structure: A Comparison With Other Rigid Sauropsid Eggs, Frederick E. Grine, James W. Kitching Dec 1986

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Early Dinosaur Egg Shell Structure: A Comparison With Other Rigid Sauropsid Eggs, Frederick E. Grine, James W. Kitching

Scanning Microscopy

Fossil eggs attributable to dinosaur (probably prosauropod) parentage that have been recovered from the early Jurassic Elliot Formation sediments at the Rooidraai locality possess shells that are similar to those of birds and crocodilians, and distinctly unlike those of chelonians and gekkonids. The preserved shell is very thin, and distinct mammillary processes are lacking, although the inner surface displays an undulating contour. The absence of these processes may be attributable to the inner portion of the shell having been at least partially decalcified during incubation and not preserved in the fossil state. The shells appear to be composed of broadly …

Replication Technique For Studying Microstructure In Fossil Enamel, A. D. Beynon Dec 1986

Replication Technique For Studying Microstructure In Fossil Enamel, A. D. Beynon

Scanning Microscopy

The present paper describes a two stage impression technique using a silicone elastomer suitable for field replication studies; which requires high dimensional stability, defined resolution, and being capable of reproducing inaccessible details. A test object consisting of etched pearlite possessed fine detail [>1μm to <0.1μm] which was suitable for testing negative/ positive replica combinations. Coltene President light-body impression material was capable of resolving parallel side depressions of widths ≧0.2μm, and it possesses very good dimensional stability with time, allowing the production of positive casts to be deferred for several months. Low viscosity Spurr resin reproduced this detail, and flowed into inaccessible sites.

Although there was evidence of bulk contraction on curing, there was no significant shrinkage on flat [linear] surfaces or in vertical relief dimensions.

Replicas of fractured hominid teeth showed good surface detail, and reproduction of inaccessible three-dimensional features on enamel surfaces. Enamel prism shape was pattern 3.

Bears and Men: A Gathering, William Mills, 108 pp., 9¼ x 9¼, Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC, cloth $24. 95. The author’s pictures, mostly of polar bears, but with a few of seals, arctic fox, men and their machine, and two of Ptarmigan, are probably more important than the text, which describes a trip out from Churchill in a tundra buggy towing a dormitory accommodation, both supposedly (but not too) bear-proof. The trip was organized for those who were interested in photographing polar bears under relatively natural conditions. In the course of the narrative the author …
