The Chemistry Of Decomposition: The Mechanisms To Decay The Human Body, Lydia J. Buxa Apr 2025

The Chemistry Of Decomposition: The Mechanisms To Decay The Human Body, Lydia J. Buxa

Senior Honors Theses

Taphonomic analysis separates decomposition into four major stages: fresh, early decomposition, advanced decomposition, and skeletonization. It is easy to demarcate the observable changes to the body, but it is far more difficult to know what underlying biochemical processes are occurring. Fresh decomposition begins with algor mortis, livor mortis, and rigor mortis, which sets the stage for the major workforces of decomposition: autolysis and putrefaction. The external signs of decomposition appear in early decomposition, which can be attributed to the breakdown of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. This also leads to major changes in the moisture levels during advanced decomposition, …

We Are Our Brains: Disembodied Brain Films In 1950s Cold War America, David P. Pierson Apr 2025

We Are Our Brains: Disembodied Brain Films In 1950s Cold War America, David P. Pierson

Faculty, Staff, and Alumni Books

Personified Body Parts in Cinema, Literature, and Visual Culture investigates the power of personifying body parts in cinema, television, visual culture, literature, erotica, folklore, and mystique.

Culturally, socially, and poetically exposing hidden aspects and subtleties of human existentialism, this book vigorously questions and problematizes numerous artistic, aesthetic, technological, naïve, and macabre manipulations of body parts for various purposes. A diverse team of authors explore how scribing human traits to limbs, eyes, brains, genitalia, hearts, and other inner organs is grotesque and aesthetic, repealing and appealing, intimidating and intimate, rude and enjoyable, material and spiritual, surprising and mundane. Personified organs are …

(Woolly) Monkey Business Pre Release Behavioral Assessment Of A Semi-Wild Lagothrix Lagotricha Poeppigii Troop In The Ecuadorian Amazon., Peyton Munroe

Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation

Lagothrix lagotricha poeppigii are labelled as endangered with a decreasing population trend by the IUCN. Woolly monkeys are primarily frugivores and play an important role in seed dispersal in their territories. Their presence in an ecosystem supports plant growth significantly and their decreasing population presents a further risk of loss of biodiversity for the Ecuadorian Amazon. In this study a semi-wild troop of Lagothrix lagotricha poeppigii, woolly monkeys, on Sumak Allpa island were assessed for their slated translocation to Limoncocha Biological Reserve in December. There are few guidelines for primate reintroductions that have been proven to predict success. As such, this …

Primates From Senèze, Eric Delson Apr 2025

Primates From Senèze, Eric Delson

Publications and Research

Senèze has yielded two primate fossils, neither from the recent field work. A partial ulna can be identified as cf. Macaca sylvanus. A nearly complete female skull is the holotype of Dolichopithecus arvernensis Depéret, 1928, now included in Paradolichopithecus. Emended and differential diagnoses are provided for this genus and species for the first time, and the Senèze skull is described and briefly compared to those of other species of the genus. Dental and cranial measurements are provided, along with comparative data. The macaque and Paradolichopithecus are moderately to highly terrestrial, respectively, and they suggest a woodland to more open …

Creatine Supplementation Is Safe, Beneficial Throughout The Lifespan, And Should Not Be Restricted, Richard Kreider, Andrew Jagim, Jose Antonio, Douglas Kalman, Chad Kerksick, Jeffrey R. Stout, Robert Wildman, Rick Collins, Diego A. Bonilla Apr 2025

Creatine Supplementation Is Safe, Beneficial Throughout The Lifespan, And Should Not Be Restricted, Richard Kreider, Andrew Jagim, Jose Antonio, Douglas Kalman, Chad Kerksick, Jeffrey R. Stout, Robert Wildman, Rick Collins, Diego A. Bonilla

Faculty Scholarship

As researchers investigating creatine supplementation, we have become increasingly concerned about reports that government agencies are attempting to restrict the sale of dietary supplements, including dietary supplements containing creatine, to children and adolescents. Creatine is a naturally occurring compound found in every cell in the human body that plays a critical role in cellular metabolism. The daily turnover of creatine is about 2–4 grams/day, depending on muscle mass and physical activity levels (1, 2). About half of the daily need for creatine is synthesized in the body from amino acids (arginine, glycine, methionine) and stored as free creatine or phosphocreatine …

Anthropogenic Influences On Parasitoid Wasps’ Biocontrol Of Invasive Insect Pest Species In Africa, Fathiya M. Khamis, Inusa J. Ajene Apr 2025

Anthropogenic Influences On Parasitoid Wasps’ Biocontrol Of Invasive Insect Pest Species In Africa, Fathiya M. Khamis, Inusa J. Ajene

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Sustainable agriculture is crucial to ensuring food and nutritional security and improving livelihoods of millions across Africa. However, agricultural production is constrained by native and invasive pests. Indiscriminate insecticide use is often the first line of action to manage these pests, harming human and animal health, and impacting biodiversity. Thus, shifting to more ecologically sustainable alternatives is key to biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture. Biological control is a core component of integrated pest management strategies, and natural enemies, like parasitoid wasps, are considered one of the most environmentally sustainable means of managing pests. However, the Anthropocene plays a significant role …

Soberanía Alimentaria En Huilloc, Perú: Percepciones Comunitarias Sobre Wasi Mikuna Y Los Límites De Las Políticas Públicas En Contextos Campesinos Indígenas, Mindy Yan

Peru: Indigenous Peoples and Globalization

This investigation presents an assessment of the state of food sovereignty in the community of Huilloc, Peru based on their practices of food production and consumption as well as the implementation of Wasi Mikuna, a state program to provide food to public schools. Using an ethnographic approach, data was collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observations with farmers, shopkeepers, educators, and families of the community over the course of nine days of fieldwork. Huilloc—an indigenous town of the High Andes located in Ollantaytambo, a district in the department of Cusco, Peru—is characterized by an extensive agricultural tradition. The transition to …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 36. Wallace, Evolution And Providence., Charles H. Smith

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

One of Alfred Russel Wallace’s most important contributions to thought was his identification of the key role provident behavior assumes in human evolution. In this essay I set out the way this idea influenced his thought process after 1864, and especially how it affected his appreciation of the possible role of spiritualism in evolution.

Avifauna Of Kheri Morat National Park: Role Of Agricultural Habitat In Maintaining The Diversity Of Birds In The Presence Of Threats In Adjacent Forest Habitat, Syed Ali Hasnain Mosvi, Saeed Azam, Abdullah Ibrahim, Saleha Abbasi, Nadeem Munawar, Muhammad Arslan Asadi Mar 2025

Avifauna Of Kheri Morat National Park: Role Of Agricultural Habitat In Maintaining The Diversity Of Birds In The Presence Of Threats In Adjacent Forest Habitat, Syed Ali Hasnain Mosvi, Saeed Azam, Abdullah Ibrahim, Saleha Abbasi, Nadeem Munawar, Muhammad Arslan Asadi

Journal of Bioresource Management

Increasing land use for agricultural practices is commonly perceived as a threat to the avian diversity. However, a number of avian species depend on these croplands for food, water, and shelter. The present study was conducted in Khairi National Park, Pakistan, for the discourse of awareness gaps about the avifaunal diversity of the protected area and to compare the bird’s diversity in the agriculture fields and native forests. For the current study, the habitat was divided into two habitat categories, i.e., forest and croplands. The sampling was executed between February 2014 and February 2017. Stratified random sampling was used to …
