The Arrhenuri Of The United States, Ruth Marshall
The Arrhenuri Of The United States, Ruth Marshall
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The Arrhenuri comprise the largest genus of the Hydrachnidz, and one of the most highly differentiated and widely distributed. The genus is easily recognized by the following characters. The thick chitinous covering of the body is pierced by large pores. A circular furrow on the dorsal side marks off an area which is entirely enclosed in the female, in the male usually open onto the posterior extension of the body. The females are oval in form and much alike ; the males are smaller and vary greatly from each other and from the females. They are characterized by a posterior …

UAES Bulletins
Investigations regarding the chemical and milling characteristics of some of the various varieties of wheat grown in the State have been carried on since the season of 1904. This is, however, the first report of the investigations that has been published. The work was started with the hope of assisting in the determination of the varieties of wheat best adapted to the State. While, of course, the variety which does not yield well but which has excellent chemical and milling characteristics is not desirable, yet on the other hand, as has already been so often pointed out, neither is the …

Revision Of The Non-Combed Eyed Siphonaptera, Karl Jordan, Nathaniel Charles Rothschild
Revision Of The Non-Combed Eyed Siphonaptera, Karl Jordan, Nathaniel Charles Rothschild
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Introduction (excerpt)
The importance of certain species of fleas in relation to the epidemiology of plague has been so amply demonstrated (see Journal of Hygiene, volumes VI 1906, p. 426, and VII 1907, p. 395) that an explanation appears scarcely necessary for our publishing a paper dealing with a revision of the non-pectinated eyed Siphonaptera. With the demonstration that fleas are capable of transmitting plague, their study at once ceased to be the mere hobby of a small group of entomological specialists. An accurate knowledge of fleas, both with regard to their structure and biology, is at present a …

Bulletin No. 102 - Poultry Experiments, James Dryden
UAES Bulletins
There are many problems connected with the housing of poultry. Among them the question of egg fertility is one of the most important. We have begun investigations at this Station to learn if possible what kind or method of housing is most conducive to a high percentage of fertility in the eggs. It is a serious question with many poultrymen how to maintain the percentage of fertile eggs, and there have been cases where the poultryman has been driven out of the business because of inability to renew his flock. There is little doubt that the artificial methods, both in …

Since the establishment of sugar factories in this State, considerable inquiry has arisen regarding the food value of sugar beets and the by-products of the factories. The last publication from this station on the subject was Bulletin No. 90 which gave the results of feeding sugar beet pulp and molasses in various combinations to sheep and steers. Previous to the appearing of this publication some experimental work had been carried out in feeding sugar beets to swine and sugar beet pulp and beet molasses to sheep. The results secured seemed to warrant further work in the same direction and in …

The Utah Legislature of 1903 passed a bill providing for the investigation by the Experiment Station of dry-land farming problems in the State of Utah, and appropriating $12,500 to be expended in carrying on this work during the two years, 1903 and 1904. Six experimental dry farms were located one in each of the following counties: Iron, Juab, San Juan, Sevier, Tooele and Washington. A second appropriation of $15,500 was made by the Legislature of 1905, for the purpose of continuing, the investigations.

UAES Bulletins
A general plan for the scientific investigation of the laws governing plant production as influenced by the application of irrigation water, was outlined in 1900 by Dr. John A. Widtsoe as Director of the Utah Experiment Station. The detailed plans were prepared by the heads of the Chemical, Agronomy and Irrigation Department, under whose cooperation the work was to be carried on. In 1903 the Office of Experiment Stations of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, by contributing funds to this work, became a party to the experiments. Since then the investigations have been under the joint supervision of the …

Malarial Fever In Horses, A. T. Peters
Malarial Fever In Horses, A. T. Peters
University of Nebraska Historical Extension: Bulletin
This disease is also called "swamp fever" by farmers, and "pernicious anaemia" by veterinarians. In Nebraska many of the farmers call the disease "typhoid fever," for it resembles this fever very much. The manner in which the disease is contracted by horses is not definitely understood. In the last few years, the veterinarians in the Philippines have discovered a disease, prevalent in India under the name of "surra," the description of which corresponds very much to that of malarial fever of horses in this country, with the exception that bacteriologists have not been able to find the surra parasite in …

Embryology And Evolution, Malo Marius Amunson
Manuscript Thesis Collection
The proofs of evolution must be sought in the entire field of science. Direct proof is found in the study of Morphology, whose bases are comparative anatomy; embryology; in the study of paleontology, of geology, of geographical distribution, in the study of nature and experiments of today. In this vast field of direct proofs of evolution it is our purpose to present some of the evidences of evolution as furnished by one of these, namely, Comparative Embryology.

Bulletin No. 96 - Care Of Milk On The Farm And The Manufacture Of Butter And Cheese, R. W. Clark
UAES Bulletins
Dairying is one of the most profitable lines of agriculture in Utah. Ever since the establishment of the dairy industry in the State, the demand for Utah butter and cheese has been strong and prices have averaged good. A good article will always sell at top price; a poor article may sell at a good price when the demand is strong, but it will not sell at a good price, if at all, when the demand is weak. High prices are undesirable at any time if they create a tendency to put out a poor article. The success of any …

Bulletin No. 95 - Codling Moth Work In 1904: The Relative Value Of Early And Late Sprays, E. D. Ball, E. G. Peterson
UAES Bulletins
The codling moth continues to be the most s serious pest of the Utah horticulturist and was therefore made the main subject of investigation by the Entomological Department for the season of 1904.
In spite of the immense amount of work that ha been done on this subject by various entomologists in this and other countries, several vital points still remain unknown and many more that have been worked out for other localities must be verified and adapted to our conditions.

For a number of years I have been studying the spermatogenesis of Papilio rutulus (pl. 12, fig. 1) not ,with any one single problem especially in view, but with the aim of ascertaining the entire life history of its sperm cell, its various phases of development, its mode of growth and differentiation, the history of its several parts, and its relation to the organism.
