A Critique Of Some Of The Metabolic Changes In The Mucosa Of The Alimentary Tract, Anthony Sanfelippo May 1933

A Critique Of Some Of The Metabolic Changes In The Mucosa Of The Alimentary Tract, Anthony Sanfelippo

Bachelors’ Theses

Among the many clinical conditions found in human beings, by both physician and surgeon, metabolic changes in the mucosa or peptic ulcer, as they are commonly known, stand out prominently from a purely scientific point of view, because of the divergent views brought forth during the past hundred yea.rs by even the ablest men. Peptic ulcer is a condition which manifests itself by a disturbance of the alimentary and digestive tracts, locally shown by an erosion of the devitalized cells of the mucous membrane.

A Morphological Study Of Daphniidae, Stanley E. Zawodny May 1933

A Morphological Study Of Daphniidae, Stanley E. Zawodny

Bachelors’ Theses

Th importance of fresh-water organisms is usually underestimated, especially by the very people who live near bodies of fresh-water and who thus can observe such organisms throughout the year. It is really easier to study minute life forms than it is to study larger organisms, for the former can be examined under all kinds of conditions as experiments are performed upon them. The purpose of this thesis is to give a short survey of the chief type among the fresh-water, Crustaceans, with special reference to morphology.

Parasitology: With Special Reference To The Frog, Leo M. Boxer May 1933

Parasitology: With Special Reference To The Frog, Leo M. Boxer

Bachelors’ Theses

Prior to the middle of the sixteenth century the knowledge of parasites, their habits, life-histories and forms as limited to a few external parasites and a few parasitic worms. Previous to the discovery of, and knowledge gained by, the study of microscopic parasites, and the effects produced by them, nearly all diseases were thought of as some sort of punishment for sins committed.

Bird Studies Of The Bear River Marshes, Ernest W. Parkinson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The establishment of the Bear River Bay Bird Refuge has created for the state of Utah an immense and valuable biological field, a veritable paradise for naturalist and sportsman alike. The naturalist wants a place to study wild life and the sportsman desires game. With the proper control of open seasons on wild fowl the hunting instinct and incentive for the sport should be satisfied for the sportsman. To the naturalist this region will open up bountiful treasures of knowledge that is to be gained only by intense and prolonged scientific study.

The Comparative Anatomy Of The Kidneys, Edward Silberman Apr 1933

The Comparative Anatomy Of The Kidneys, Edward Silberman

Bachelors’ Theses

Most of the Information which I have been able to amass has been taken from text books dealing with the kidney as an excretory organ only. My bibliography, therefore, covers a rather limited field. In it there will be found no articles in the various journals as my endeavors to find any such articles on my particular subject have not met with success. My thesis does not only contain a comprehensive account of the kidney, its weight and size, but also an account of its shape, size and correlation in growth and size to the age and weight of the …

The Influence Of Feed And Sunshine On The Vitamin D Content Of Cow’S Milk, Ben L. Robinson Jan 1933

The Influence Of Feed And Sunshine On The Vitamin D Content Of Cow’S Milk, Ben L. Robinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the past several years there has been a growing tendency among dairymen, particularity those located near the large cities, to keep their cows in the barn much of the time. Under such a system of management the cows receive but little direct sunshine. In some localities it is also possible to find many cows which are fed the year around on dry feed receiving very little, if any, green food, either as soiling crops or as pasture. From many standpoints such practices are, of course, necessary and desirable, but from the standpoint of the nutritional value of the milk …

Autobiography Of Proteins In Nutrients, Marguerite Jones Jan 1933

Autobiography Of Proteins In Nutrients, Marguerite Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in 1933, surveys the chemical classification of proteins and their role in human nutrition, with the stated aim of preparing home economics students to understand protein's function in the diet. Jones organizes proteins into three major classes: simple proteins, including albumins, globulins, glutelins, protamins, and histones; conjugated proteins, including nucleo-proteins, glyco-proteins, phospho-proteins, and hemoglobins; and derived proteins, including albumoses, peptones, and peptids, describing the chemical composition, solubility properties, and sources of each.

The thesis then examines amino acids as the end products of protein digestion, identifying those essential for growth and maintenance, including tryptophane, …

An Economic Study Of The Food Habits Of The Ring-Necked Pheasant In South Dakota, H.C. Severin, South Dakota Department Of Game And Fish

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

The economic status in South Dakota of the ring-necked pheasant (Phasinus colchicus torquatus Gmelin X Phasianus colchicus colchicus L.) has turned out to be a controversial matter of no small importance with the citizenry of the State. This bird was introduced into South Dakota mainly thru the efforts and funds of the State Department of Game and Fish, and thru this department the pheasant was protected form slaughter by hunters, and permitted to multiply. When it was believed that the pheasants hasd established themselves in a county and multiplied sufficiently to warrant an open season , such an open season …

Trichomonas Fulicae Sp. Nov. From Fulica Americana, Elizabeth G. Lash Jan 1933

Trichomonas Fulicae Sp. Nov. From Fulica Americana, Elizabeth G. Lash

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Numerous trichomonad flagelletes from the intestines or various birds have been described; but as fas as the writer has been able to discover, none from the intestine of the coot, Fulica americana. Martin and Robertson (1911) described Trichomones eberthi and T. gallinerum from the caecum of fowls; Kotlan (1923) described Tetratrichomonas avatis from the caecum of ducks; Tyzzer (1930) described flagellates from the ruffed grouse.

However, the species described by the above authors are quite different from Trichomonas to be described in this paper. This organism is definitely a member of the genus Trichomonas since it possesses the distinguishing characteristics …

Bulletin No. 239 - Wet Beet Pulp Compared With Corn Silage In The Dairy Ration, George Q. Bateman, George B. Caine Nov 1932

Bulletin No. 239 - Wet Beet Pulp Compared With Corn Silage In The Dairy Ration, George Q. Bateman, George B. Caine

UAES Bulletins

Wet beet pulp coming as a by-product from the sugar-beet industry in Utah is fed in varying amounts to dairy cows. Corn silage is also used to make up part of the dairy ration. Conflicting statements as to the value of the one feed as compared to the other indicated the need of more knowledge as to the value of pulp as compared to silage in the dairy ration. For this reason a study of the problem was initiated in February, 1926.

Why Some Hens Lay More Eggs Than Others, H. E. Alder Nov 1932

Why Some Hens Lay More Eggs Than Others, H. E. Alder

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The 1929 report of the Storrs Egg Laying Contest, which has been conducted at Storrs, Connecticut, twenty-one years, shows that the best pen of ten hens entered laid 2,802 eggs, and the poorest pen laid 829 eggs. In the best pen the average egg production per hen was 280, 2 eggs as compared with 82.9 eggs per bird in the poorest pen. Why did the one pen lay so many eggs, and the other so few? This prompts us to try to find out what factors are responsible for the number of eggs a hen lays in the course of …

The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Albinism In Terrestrial Isopods, S. W. Geiser Nov 1932

The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Albinism In Terrestrial Isopods, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

The well-known British geneticist, Professor F. A. E. Crew, of the University of Edinburgh, in a plate illustrating his article, "Albino," in the fourteenth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, gives an excellent figure showing albinism in the common European lobster, Homar1lS gammarus (L.). This unusual figure and record, as one of the few reported cases of albinism among the Crustacea, deserves more than passing comment.

The Vitamin A And The Vitamin E Content Of Field-Cured And Artificially Cured Alfalfa Hay, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis, R. R. Graves Oct 1932

The Vitamin A And The Vitamin E Content Of Field-Cured And Artificially Cured Alfalfa Hay, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis, R. R. Graves

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A comparative study of the vitamin A content of field-cured and artificially cured alfalfa was made by comparing the growth produced by 124 rats receiving alfalfa hay as their source of vitamin A. From the results of this study, in which the experiments were duplicated, it is concluded that under the conditions of these experiments the artificially cured alfalfa was twice as potent in vitamin A as was the field-cured alfalfa. The comparative study of the vitamin E content of these hays was made by comparing the number of litters produced by groups of female rats which received graded quantities …
