Effect Of Manganese And Iodine Additions In A Specific Ration For Laying Hens, F. E. Mussehl
Effect Of Manganese And Iodine Additions In A Specific Ration For Laying Hens, F. E. Mussehl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
This preliminary experiment does not answer all of the questions that are presented about manganese and iodine requirements. It can only be taken to indicate that for a typical situation with a typical ration of the type that many poultry producers use, there was no satisfactory evidence that egg production, hatchability and the viability of the hens was limited by manganese and iodine in the ration.
Catalysis And The Chemical Industry, Harold E. Abbott
Catalysis And The Chemical Industry, Harold E. Abbott
Field and Laboratory
Before the advent of organized chemistry, alchemists were searching for a "philosopher's stone," a hypothetical substance which was reputed to be able to turn basic metals into the precious metal, gold. While their crusade was never rewarded with success, they laid the foundation for the chemical study of today. In this field a catalyst for a desirable chemical reaction has turned out to be a true "philosopher's stone." Catalysts have played an important part in the production of substitutes which are very useful in today's limited markets.

Increases In Aphid Populations On Potato Plants Sprayed With Zinc Arsenite In Western Nebraska, Roscoe E. Hill, H. Douglas Tate
Increases In Aphid Populations On Potato Plants Sprayed With Zinc Arsenite In Western Nebraska, Roscoe E. Hill, H. Douglas Tate
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
During the 1941 growing season, field observations in western Nebraska indicated that aphids, Myzus persicae (Sulz.), were becoming abundant in experimental potato plots that had been treated with zinc arsenite-lime sulfur spray for controlling potato flea beetles, Epitrix cucumeris (Harr.), and the potato psyllid, Paratrioza cockerelli (Sulc.). Detailed examinations of leaves showed that significantly greater populations were present on the sprayed than on the untreated plants. Evidence of slight increases also was noted on plants dusted with a barium fluosilicate and sulfur mixture.
Nebraska Cattle Grub Survey, Lewis T. Graham, H. Douglas Tate
Nebraska Cattle Grub Survey, Lewis T. Graham, H. Douglas Tate
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The scarcity of data on the actual extent of cattle grub infestation in Nebraska became evident during the winter of 1942--43 when a control program was being organized. Although there were some cattlemen who were acutely aware of the losses occasioned by this pest, there were many others who had given the problem little thought or who believed that infestation resulted largely from the importation of feeder cattle. More detailed information was obviously desirable in order to present an accurate and convincing account of the problem to the cattle growers.
The Life History Of Cyclocoelum Microcotyleum, George Alfred Butler
The Life History Of Cyclocoelum Microcotyleum, George Alfred Butler
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Monostome trematodes of the family cyclocoelidae, taken from the American coot, Fulica americana, were described as a new species, Cyclocoelum microcotyleum, by Noble in 1933. These flukes were found in the air-spaces or the coelomes of birds taken from the waterways near Stockton, California.
Before this present work various attempts had been made to determine the lite history of this fluke. A number of fresh-water snails, indigenous to the region in which the definitive host was found, were exposed to miracidia of this fluke, but observations or infection were not obtained. In the winter of 1940-41 specimens of …
Bulletin No. 305 - The Composition Of Sumer Range Plants In Utah, L. A. Stoddart, J. E. Greaves
Bulletin No. 305 - The Composition Of Sumer Range Plants In Utah, L. A. Stoddart, J. E. Greaves
UAES Bulletins
In Utah, a vast industry of livestock grazing, which is the backbone of the state's agriculture, has arisen during the past 75 years. Range land furnishes between 6 and 7 million animal unit months of forage to some 2 1/2 million sheep and 275 thousand range cattle. Income from meat, wool, and range livestock sales in Utah is about $15,801,500 annually, of which $11,700,000 is calculated to be obtained from range lands exclusive of cultivated pastures.
These range lands can be used economically in no other way than by grazing livestock and, because of heavy winter snows and protracted dry …

Swine Erysipelas Infection In Man, L. Van Es
Swine Erysipelas Infection In Man, L. Van Es
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The preceding decade witnessed the introduction and spread within this state of a hitherto uncommon disease of swine. This disorder, swine erysipelas, has gradually become disseminated throughout Nebraska's swine population until it has developed into a major problem of preventive veterinary medicine. Its appearance, furthermore, added another to our list of animal maladies which are communicable to man. The latter consideration may serve as warrant to review what is known about the part played by swine erysipelas as a human disease, to describe its more salient features and to examine them from epidemiological, clinical, pathological and prophylactic viewpoints.
A Study Of Fluctuations In Coyote Numbers And Possible Causes, Sherwin B. Griswold
A Study Of Fluctuations In Coyote Numbers And Possible Causes, Sherwin B. Griswold
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This paper reports the findings of a study of coyote numbers, with particular reference to fluctuations, their periodicity, if any, and their possible causes. In order to answer these questions studies of bounty payments were made in four centrally located counties of Kansas. The counties selected for this study were Ellis, Russell, Edwards, and Harvey. The location of these counties is shown in figure I on page 5. A record of these bounty payments was secured by checking through the records in the office of the county clerk of these counties for all years in which records were on file.

Bulletin No. 302 - Nutritional Inadequacy Of Beet Molasses Rations For Swine, Russel A. Rasmussen, Harry H. Smith, Ralph W. Phillips, Ton J. Cunha
UAES Bulletins
The feeding of large amounts of beet molasses to young hogs causes a condition that is characterized by a wobbly gait, and that is frequently fatal. Hog raisers have apparently recognized this condition for a number of years, since a number of farmers have reported it in their animals. Some farmers have also reported breeding failures and abortions when beet molasses was fed to brood sows. Consequently, beet molasses has not been considered a good hog feed by Utah raisers.
Beet molasses is a relatively cheap source of carbohydrates and could be used advantageously in pork production if the cause …

A Study Of The Sanitary Quality Of Drinking Water In Rural Districts Of Crawford County, Kansas, Kenneth Andrew Mcclure
A Study Of The Sanitary Quality Of Drinking Water In Rural Districts Of Crawford County, Kansas, Kenneth Andrew Mcclure
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
This study involved the testing of seventy-six wells and thirty cisterns in representative rural districts of Crawford County, using methods specified by the American Public Health Association in the eighth edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Sewage.
The results of the tests showed that only fourteen of the 106 wells and cisterns tested did not yield Escherichia coli. Of the ninety-two polluted drinking water supplies twenty-seven were from cisterns, while sixty-five were from wells. Of these sixty-five only five of the fourteen deep wells in the group showed evidence of contamination.
These findings seem to warrant …

The Histology Of The Duodenum Of Thamnopsis Sirtalis, Harvey William Lyon
The Histology Of The Duodenum Of Thamnopsis Sirtalis, Harvey William Lyon
Bachelors’ Theses
The problem directly concerned is the histological study of the duodenum In Thamnopsls sirtalls, the common green or garter snake. The gross anatomy has been worked out In Reptilian forms and shows great variations, whereas very little work has been performed in the histology of the digestive organs. Some study has been made In other Reptilian forms such as the lizzard family but the knowledge of their histological structure is limited. Therefore if the gross anatomy differs in various forms, so may the histology differ also. It is the problem then of this thesis to investigate this subject and determine …
An Experimental Attempt To Modify The Sex Ratio Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Herman Weingrod
An Experimental Attempt To Modify The Sex Ratio Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Herman Weingrod
Bachelors’ Theses
Sex control has been defined as the science of producing male or female offspring at will by artificial means. Because of the far reaching consequences of such a technique, man has always had a strong desire to control the sex of his offspring. The ancient Egyptians attempted it by means of magic, while the old Hebrew Talmud offered suggestions for its practice based on practical experience. The problem as such forms part of the folklore and superstition of many ancient races and peoples.

A Study Of Origins And Ecological Features Of Hardy, Cultivated, Herbaceous Plants Of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dorothy Elaine Witheck
A Study Of Origins And Ecological Features Of Hardy, Cultivated, Herbaceous Plants Of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dorothy Elaine Witheck
Bachelors’ Theses
Gardeners have always been interested in herbaceous plants, chiefly because of their beauty and usefulness. As a result of the great popularity, a large number of attractive varieties have been produced through centuries of' cultivation, selection and breeding. Very early agricultural and medical demands stimulated an interest in the plants, and as early as 372-287 B.C. Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle, described about 460 cultivated plants and classified them as herbs, undershrubs, shrubs and trees. Much of the work accomplished by the ancient Greeks was lost and it was not until the sixteenth century that renewed enthusiasm for the study …

A Study Of The Anatomical Structure Of The 6mm Wall-Eyed Pike, Richard E. Roche
Bachelors’ Theses
The following is a detailed study of the 6 mm Wall-eyed Pike. The organs and organ systems are presented and discussed in the same serial order that they appear in the embryo beginning at the anterior end and proceeding posteriorly. There has apparently been very little work done on the embryology of the Wall-eyed Pile for the literature contains only one article that is even closely related to this problem. In 1890 Reighard made a general study of the development of the Wall-eyed Pike from the time of fertilization to the fully grown adult. He did not, however, make any …
The Effect Of Sulfanilamide On The Spleen, Kidney, And Erythrocytes Of The Albino Rat, Paul M. Bergen
The Effect Of Sulfanilamide On The Spleen, Kidney, And Erythrocytes Of The Albino Rat, Paul M. Bergen
Bachelors’ Theses
Sulfanilamide today is recognized somewhat as a magical drug since it is being used in the cure of so many different diseases. Therefore it was my desire to experiment with it. The problem which the author has endeavored to solve has been, as the title implies, just what effect the drug has upon the blood, the cells of the spleen and the kidney. It has been my aim to verify or refute the findings of experimenters who have delved in the field previous to my experimentation, l and to attempt to give some explanation for the findings.
