Notes On The Flora Of Taylor County, Texas, W. L. Tolstead, V. L. Cory Jan 1946

Notes On The Flora Of Taylor County, Texas, W. L. Tolstead, V. L. Cory

Field and Laboratory

While the senior author was in training at Camp Barkeley, Taylor County, Texas, from September 1942 to February 1944, a nearly complete collection of native plants was made from that region. Specimens were forwarded to Mr. V. L. Cory, then of the Agricultural Experiment Station at Sonora, Texas. Most of them were identified immediately, but others were referred to specialists for study and determination. This paper lists the species collected, with habitat-, locality-, and other noteworthy information concerning them. (Continued in July 1946 issue.)

Parasites Of Ohio Muskrats, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Parasites of the muskrat (Ondatra zibethica) have received considerable study, but little in Ohio. From March 20, 1943, to March 22, 1945, 70 Ohio muskrat carcasses were examined, most of them being obtained from trappers by Merrill C. Gilfillan, Leader of the Pittman-Robertson Muskrat Project in Ohio. The specimens were from seven localities: Lake Erie Marshes (28); Killbuck Valley Marsh (17, lacking liver and lungs); Walnut Creek (19) and Whetstone Creek (2), (Morrow County); Buckeye Lake (1); Little Scioto River, Marion County (1); and Union County near Marysville (2).

The Effects Of Penicillin On E. Rhusiopathiae Infected Pigeons, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney, I. C. Blore Oct 1945

The Effects Of Penicillin On E. Rhusiopathiae Infected Pigeons, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney, I. C. Blore

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Advantage was taken of an opportunity to study the effects of penicillin on Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, the causative organism of swine erysipelas. Owing to the fact that swine cannot readily be infected with erysipelas by artificial methods, pigeons which are highly susceptible to the disease, were selected to serve as experimental animals. It was the purpose of these studies to ascertain whether or not the swine erysipelas bacillus is sensitive to the drug and incidentally to determine the possibility of finding application of penicillin in the treatment of swine.

Carotene Content Of Native Nebraska Grasses, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis, F. D. Keim Oct 1945

Carotene Content Of Native Nebraska Grasses, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis, F. D. Keim

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The carotene content of twenty-four grasses native to Nebraska were determined at approximately monthly intervals from June to November. While the carotene concentration of most of the grasses was moderately high during the growing season, it declined to a rather low point by late November. With the exception of Switchgrass, Hairy Grama, Little Bluestem and Prairie Dropseed, all of the grasses contained enough carotene to supply the needs of range cattle until late November. However, only eighteen of the grasses still contained enough carotene by the latter part of September to furnish the carotene required by dairy cows. Even as …

Injury And Death Or Recovery Of Trees In Prairie Climate, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver Oct 1945

Injury And Death Or Recovery Of Trees In Prairie Climate, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Several years of decreasing precipitation initiated the 7 years of drought. By midsummer of 1934 it vas clear that the prairie region of the Middle West was undergoing the greatest drought since the beginning of its recorded weather history. The 12 months following June, 1933, was the driest weather period ever recorded not only for the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri, but also drought in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado was very severe (Kincer 1934). This intensely dry period, as well as those in several of the following years was accompanied by record-breaking temperatures, extremely low humidities, and exceptionally …

A Comparative Study Of Directed Laboratory And Lecture Demonstration As Methods Of Instruction In Teaching Botany To High School Students, M. Lucida Vorndran Aug 1945

A Comparative Study Of Directed Laboratory And Lecture Demonstration As Methods Of Instruction In Teaching Botany To High School Students, M. Lucida Vorndran

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

A controlled investigation of green plants as the most important food factories of the world has been made in order to contribute more information upon the issue. Stated more specifically, the problems of this experimental study were the following: 1. To determine which of the two methods, if either, is superior as a procedure for learning. 2. To determine whether laboratory experiments are more effective than lecture-demonstration in training students to think clearly, to correlate and retain facts; and finally, to draw logical conclusions. 3. To determine, if possible, which method stimulated the greater amount of pupil interest.

Sources Of Amylase-Producing Bacteria, George L. Peltier, L.D. Beckord Aug 1945

Sources Of Amylase-Producing Bacteria, George L. Peltier, L.D. Beckord

Papers in Microbiology

In the search for bacteria possessing high amylolytic activity, some thousand or more isolates were screened on soluble starch agar and the extent of their activities determined qualitatively by the loss of medium response to Lugol's iodine solution. The selected isolates were then grown on a liquid wheat bran medium and the resulting starch-dextrinizing activity measured quantitatively. No attempt was made to determine the properties of the various amylases. The primary purpose of this report is to point out the original sources from which the isolates were made and to correlate the nature of the substrates with the extent of …

Bio-Ecology On A Mixed Prairie Near Hays, Kansas, H. Leo Brown Jul 1945

Bio-Ecology On A Mixed Prairie Near Hays, Kansas, H. Leo Brown

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

A survey of the activity of wild animals in connection with range conditions and range management is greatly needed in western Kansas. To have a well-managed range one should have an understanding of the ecological factors which benefit or deplete the native vegetation that is essential for production of livestock. The impact of grazing, and the effect of changes in edaphic and atmospheric environment on the prairie have further emphasized the importance of a cover of grass in preventing erosion.

The Effects Of Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, And Pressure On Growth In Chilomonas Paramecium And Tetrahymena Geleii Furgason, D.M. Pace, R.L. Ireland Jul 1945

The Effects Of Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, And Pressure On Growth In Chilomonas Paramecium And Tetrahymena Geleii Furgason, D.M. Pace, R.L. Ireland

Papers in Microbiology

The effects of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pressure on animal organisms have been widely studied, but most of the investigations in this field concern chiefly the effects of extreme, especially high, atmospheric pressures on blood changes, respiration, length of life, etc., in Vertebrates.

Very few detailed observations have been made on the relation between oxygen tension or carbon dioxide tension and growth in Protozoa. The few investigations that have been carried out are concerned primarily with the effect of these gases on respiration although some observations have been made on the relation of aerobic and anaerobic conditions and growth in …

The Plains Garter Snake, Thamnophis Radix, In Ohio, Roger Conant, Edward S. Thomas, Robert L. Rausch Jun 1945

The Plains Garter Snake, Thamnophis Radix, In Ohio, Roger Conant, Edward S. Thomas, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The announcement that Thamnophis radix, the Plains garter snake, occurs in Ohio and is not rare in at least one county, will surprise most herpetologists and students of animal distribution. Since the publication of Ruthven's monograph on the genus (1908), almost all authors have followed his definition of the range of this species, giving eastern Illinois as its eastern-most limit. Ruthven (p. 80), however, believed that radix very probably would be found in western Indiana, a supposition since substantiated by Schmidt and Necker (1935: 72), who report the species from the dune region of Lake and Porter counties.

Histological Study Of The Small Intestine Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis, Robert George Stineman Jun 1945

Histological Study Of The Small Intestine Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis, Robert George Stineman

Bachelors’ Theses

Although much work has been done histologically with the vertebrates, very little seems to have been done on the intestinal tract of the reptile. This is especially true of the snakes, despite the abundant sources of material. Reptiles are one of the first classes of vertebrates in which there is a distinction made between small and large intestine. Histology textbooks devote only a few lines to the histology of the reptilian small intestine. For this reason it seems that it would be worthwhile to make a detailed study of that portion of the intestinal tract immediately distal to the duodenum …

The Histology Of The Digestive Tract Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis 3. Esophagus, Janice Jean Mcfarlane Jun 1945

The Histology Of The Digestive Tract Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis 3. Esophagus, Janice Jean Mcfarlane

Bachelors’ Theses

This is the third in a series of investigations of the comparative histology of the digestive tract of Thamnophis sirtalis, the common green snake. Comparatively little recent work of this nature upon any of the class Reptilia, and especially upon the order Ophidia, seems to have been undertaken. Kendall(1940) makes no mention of Ophidia, but discusses briefly the digestive system of the lizard, limiting his treatment of the esophagus to a few lines. Cole (1941) has an equally short and general discussion of the digestive system of Thamnophis sirtalis, again devoting but a brief space to his discussion of the …

Atypical Conditions Of The Inferior Vena Cava, Mary F. Reagan Jun 1945

Atypical Conditions Of The Inferior Vena Cava, Mary F. Reagan

Bachelors’ Theses

Extensive dissection of various mammalian forms, expecially of man, the rabbit, and the cat has led to a recognition of a certain vascular pattern of the inferior vena cava which is typical for the group, It occurs so consistently that the occasional specimens which differ from it are of interest because of both their ontogenetic and phylogenetic significance.

Some Technique Methods For Preparing Slides Of The Paramecium, Irene Padley

Bachelors’ Theses

Du Jardin (1835) was probably the first to recognize in protozoa, living substance. To this substance, he applied the word sarcode. In 1861, Max Schultze expressed the idea that sarcode and protoplasm are the same thing.

Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart Apr 1945

Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart

Faculty Honor Lectures

Although grazing of livestock has been a practice and a profession of man almost from his beginning only recently has range management reached anything approaching a pre~ cise science. Although ' trials and errors over the years brought to light much practical methodology for assuring high production from grazing land, still it remained for the plant physiologist and ecologist to find the whys and wherefores, and to advance new methods and new thoughts which promise to increase productivity still further and at the same time maintain the great range resource.

The peculiar land situation that marked America in her forma~ …

Studies On The Riboflavin Content Of Cheese, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis Apr 1945

Studies On The Riboflavin Content Of Cheese, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The riboflavin concentrations of twenty-seven kinds of cheeses and cheese spreads were determined by feeding these products to rats whose body stores of riboflavin had been depleted by being fed a riboflavin-deficient diet. Fifteen experiments were made in which 1,223 rats were used. The results obtained varied from 13.5 to 1.2 micrograms of riboflavin per gram of cheese (or spread). The samples of Goat, Velveeta, Mel-0-Pure, and Liederkranz had the highest concentrations of riboflavin while the samples of Cream and Pimento Cream had the lowest concentrations.

Bulletin No. 317 - Range Lands Of Utah County And Their Utilization, L. A. Stoddart Mar 1945

Bulletin No. 317 - Range Lands Of Utah County And Their Utilization, L. A. Stoddart

UAES Bulletins

Utah County, comprising about 1,394,760 acres, lies in the north central part of Utah immediately west of the precipitous Wasatch Mountains. These mountains, which occupy about the eastern half of the county, vary in elevation from 4,700 feet at the bench lands to 9,000 and 10,000 feet. Extreme elevations of 12,000 feet are found on the highest peaks. The western half of the county, although broken by small mountain ranges, is much more level, lower in elevation, and more arid. Whereas the mountainous eastern parts of the county are marked by higher precipitation and, consequently by relatively dense vegetation, mostly …
