Farm And Ranch Economic Review For South Dakota, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College
Farm And Ranch Economic Review For South Dakota, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College
SDSU Extension Circulars
The stage is set for another year of high-level economic activity. In this type of an economy, agricultural prospects are generally good. But, some weakening is possible late in the year. A stable or gently-rising level of wholesale prices is expected during most of 1953. Prices received by farmers may tend downward and prices paid, steady to upward. Net farm income may be a little lower than in 1952.

For sixty-four years the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station has been studying the problems of the farmer to make life on the farm more profitable and more enjoyable and in turn to improve the economy of the entire state. From the laboratories and from the experimental farms have come research results that have and will continue to mean dollars and cents to the farmer and increased prosperity to the state. Here are a few brief statements of some of the results of the work during the past two years.
Farmer's 1952 Income Tax, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College
Farmer's 1952 Income Tax, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College
SDSU Extension Circulars
Every person whose gross income during the year is $600 or more MUST file a return even though no tax is due. Gross income is total income (subject to tax) before any expenses are deducted. If at least two-thirds of your gross income is from farming and your business year starts January 1, you have two choices. Either, (a) File your return and pay the tax on or before January 31, 1953; or (b) File an estimate of your tax and pay this amount by January 15, 1953, the file your return and pay any balance due by March 15, …

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
The dipping of all sheep in the Southwest Division of the State, as well as in the Dundas, Esperance and Westonia road districts and those portions of the Merredin, Narembeen, Lake Grace and Phillips River road districts situated east of the No. 1 Rabbit Proof Fence is compulsory, and is required to be carried out within six weeks of the date of shearing.
The Insect Vector In Relation To Myxomatosis, J A. Button
The Insect Vector In Relation To Myxomatosis, J A. Button
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
The rabbit is undoubtedly the greatest single pest with which agriculturalists in this country have to contend. It is, therefore, not surprising that any new and promising method of controlling the pest should be greeted with considerable interest. Although a great deal has already been written regarding the myxomatosis virus a brief and co-ordinated summary of the situation as it now exists in Australia, with particular reference to this State, should prove of value as a guide to the wider establishment of the disease next summer.
Daffodils For Everyone, C C. Hillary
Daffodils For Everyone, C C. Hillary
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
For hundreds of years, poets and authors of renown in almost every country have extolled in verse and prose the loveliness of the daffodil. And well they might, since it is a floral gem of great beauty and one so widely grown that it might well be called everybody's flower.
Wild Dog Investigations, A R. Tomlinson, C K. Blair
Wild Dog Investigations, A R. Tomlinson, C K. Blair
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
Following the information gained during the expedition to the north of the Nullabor plains in 1951, which indicated that dogs were moving along well defined "leads" on to the Plains from the direction of the Warburton Ranges, the Agriculture Protection Board authorised a further expedition by the Vermin Control Branch to endeavor to trace the origin of the migrations. Large sandhills had prevented the Nullabor Plains expedition from following the "leads" as far north as planned.
Growth Regulating Substances Used For Weed Killing, G R. W Meadly
Growth Regulating Substances Used For Weed Killing, G R. W Meadly
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
Many discoveries of considerable importance to agriculture have been made accidentally while scientists have been working on other problems. The presence of a hormone, or growth-regulating substance, in plants has been known for many years, and in 1934 chemists were able to define the composition of this substance. With this information it was possible to prepare synthetically many related chemicals which were applied experimentally to plants, mainly for the purpose of stimulating growth, particularly with a view to promoting root development of cuttings.
Disease Of Dairy Cattle - Warts And Eye Cancer, J Craig
Disease Of Dairy Cattle - Warts And Eye Cancer, J Craig
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
Papilloma or warts are by no means uncommon in dairy cattle in Western Australia. In maturing cows, they usually occur on the udder, while in young stock they may be found on the head, neck, and shoulders. In bad cases, a large proportion of the body area may be covered with the warts, forming large cauliflower- like masses which often bleed easily.

Recently we had to dismantle and rebuild a Sunshine harvester main wheel. We managed to complete the job fairly satisfactorily but probably a few hints on the correct procedure would have enabled us to do the work with only a fraction of the expenditure of time and labour. Could you publish any notes that might help?
Poison Plants Of Western Australia - Cape Tulip, C A. Gardner
Poison Plants Of Western Australia - Cape Tulip, C A. Gardner
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
For countless ages the flora of Western Australia remained as a separate entity undisturbed by plant intruders, but following upon the arrival of the white man came a number of plants, some of which proved able colonists. These included useful plants such as the naturalised clovers; others such as the Cape weed developed here to an extent not to be observed in their natural home. Some of the plants now regarded as troublesome weeds were accidentally introduced by various agencies, while others were deliberately imported, but have since become widespread.

A Simple And Effective Cow Bail, L C. Snook
A Simple And Effective Cow Bail, L C. Snook
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
While visiting the property of Mr. R. Burke, Cowaramup, I saw in use a type of cow-bail which made an immediate appeal because of its simplicity, effectiveness and ease of working. Mr. Burke is obviously skilled at setting up practical time-saving devices but there seems to be no reason why other dairy farmers should not make use of the principle he employed.

Book Review: "The Hermit-Philosopher Of Liendo," By I. K. Stephens, S. W. Geiser
Field and Laboratory
April 17, 1951 was the fortieth anniversary of the death of Edmund Montgomery; and on that date the Southern Methodist University Press. published the first biography of this eminent British-American philosopher. Handsome, urbane, educated in medicine at Heidelberg, Berlin, Bonn, Wiirzburg, Prague, and Vienna, member of the Royal College, of Physicians of London, this scientist-philosopher whose work was. admired by Europe's keenest intellects, lived for many years obscurely on a plantation at Hempstead, Texas. A less likely cultural home for this illegitimate son of a Scottish lord could scarcely be imagined.... This admirable biography of Edmund Montgomery (1835-1911) philosopher and …
Hydatid Disease In Boreal Regions, Robert L. Rausch
Hydatid Disease In Boreal Regions, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
It is the purpose of this paper to review the status of hydatid disease (caused by Echinococcus spp.) in the boreal regions of the world. Its importance has long been recognized in Eurasian countries, but only during recent years have investigators added anything significant to the knowledge of hydatid disease in North America. There is need to disseminate up-to-date information among medical workers in Canada and Alaska, where the disease is endemic in northern regions having a large aboriginal population. Therefore, particular emphasis will be placed on the situation in boreal North America.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xi. Helminth Parasites Of Microtine Rodents--Taxonomic Considerations, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
A survey of the helminth parasites of Alaskan rodents has been carried on by the writer since the winter of 1948-1949, as a continuation of an investigation begun in the central United States in 1942. Results of this work indicate that, despite the size of the Territory of Alaska, the survey is complete enough to furnish a reasonable knowledge of the species of helminths parasitic in microtine rodents in Alaska. Information derived from previous investigations serves as a standard against which the completeness of the present work may be judged. In the writer's opinion, the continuation of this work on …
Labor Inputs For Livestock Enterprises, Sigurd Strangeland
Labor Inputs For Livestock Enterprises, Sigurd Strangeland
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
For all kinds of farm planning input and output data relating to costs, yields and labor requirements are needed. Although labor is a major factor in the cost of producing livestock and livestock products little information is available on this input for South Dakota. Some estimates are available, but these estimates are average labor requirements which are based upon farm records obtained in the Corn Belt. These data may be questioned with respect to representativeness for this state. Also the use of average requirements for all sizes of herds and degrees of mechanization leaves much to be desired for useful …
Internal Parasites Of Cattle, J Craig
Internal Parasites Of Cattle, J Craig
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
Worm infestation (Parasitic Gastro-Enteritis) is frequently a cause of serious economic loss both in calves and yearlings. It is unfortunate, however, that stock owners do not realise until too late the full extent of the effects of these worm parasites—for the cost can be counted not only in the actual deaths sustained, but in the resultant check in the animal's growth and development.
Shearing Shed Design, W L. Mcgarry
Shearing Shed Design, W L. Mcgarry
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
As the returns from sales of wool represent a large proportion of many farmers incomes at the present time, it is essential that the fullest consideration should be given to any factors affecting the lifting and preparation of the clip for market. Foremost among these is the provision of adequately-designed sheds with plenty of light and sufficient space for shearing and classing and for the wool tables, bins, press and other equipment.
Evicting Bees From Houses, A Kessell
Evicting Bees From Houses, A Kessell
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
Every year, the Apicultural Branch receives a number of inquiries from harassed householders concerning methods of evicting bee colonies which have taken up their abode in houses. Cavity walls often provide cosy quarters for swarms seeking accommodation, while others establish themselves in chimneys, ventilators and under floors.

Having read with interest the articles on roses which have appeared in the Journal I am inquiring if you can supply some advice on the rooting of Fortuniana cuttings. I have grown two Fortuniana bushes with the idea of striking some cuttings for stocks. I already have some nice roses but all are growing on briar stocks which were obtained by taking up some of the suckers. This query was received in a letter addressed to the author of the rose articles (Mr. C. C. Hillary) but unfortunately you omitted to sign the letter. Fortuniana cuttings are best taken

Insect Pests - Aphides, C F.H Jenkins
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
The members of the aphis family are remarkable creatures both in structure and habits. They are practically world-wide in their distribution and despite their small size and apparent fragility they thrive under a wide variety of conditions and are among the most prolific breeders in the animal kingdom.
