Layout Of A Dairy Premise, A E. Baker
Layout Of A Dairy Premise, A E. Baker
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
As the average dairyman spends a large proportion of his working time in the milking shed throughout the year, careful attention to the layout of these premises will give good returns in time saved, and will enable the task of milking to be carried out efficiently and with a minimum of discomfort.

Distribution Of Fluorine In Utah County, Utah, Soils And Uptake Of Fluorine By Plants, E. Don Hansen
Distribution Of Fluorine In Utah County, Utah, Soils And Uptake Of Fluorine By Plants, E. Don Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fluorine released from industrial operations is eventually deposited on the surface of the earth, intercepted by plants, or absorbed in open bodies of water. the term fluorine as used in this thesis will be considered to refer to fluorine in combined form.
Industrial expansion has caused atmosphere pollution from fluorine in many parts of the United States. Utah County, Utah, is one of the affected area, and is the principal area of concern in this thesis.
In the spring of 1951, Utah Agricultural Experiment Station initiated a broad investigation on soil, water, plant, and animal problems arising from fluorine atmospheric …

Wildlife management has been defined as lithe manipulation of wild populations of vertebrate animals in their relation to man and his interests" Wildlife management, then, could not exist in the absence ot either wildlife or humans. Converting this idea to the waterfowl situation, we can say that there are no waterfowl problems other than as they exist in the minds of men. (Wil1s, 1951) These words by the Chief of the IllinoIs Natural History Survey precede a plea for fundamental facts and a basic understanding of waterfowl upon which sound management can in turn be based. l"or only through sound …
A Comparison Of Formulae In The Manufacture Of Ice Milk, Glen Wilford Sargent
A Comparison Of Formulae In The Manufacture Of Ice Milk, Glen Wilford Sargent
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ice milk is not a new product in the ice cream industry. Rather it is one that has gained only little popularity, except in the preparation of "malts" and "milk shakes"; however, within the last decade the gallonage of ice milk produced has more than doubled.
Ice milk has been relatively unimportant because of the difficulty of obtaining a product with acceptable quality. In recent years progressive ice milk manufacturers and research workers have discovered new ingredients and processing procedure that seem to produce favorable results.
This low-fat product has several merits that justify its recent popularity, such as low …
A Chromatographic Study Of The Lower Fatty Acids Of Swiss Cheese As A Measure Of Quality, Dee R. Morgan
A Chromatographic Study Of The Lower Fatty Acids Of Swiss Cheese As A Measure Of Quality, Dee R. Morgan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Importance of project:
A sweet hazelnut flavor, a pliant texture, and large, evenly distributed "eyes" characterize high quality Swiss of Emmenthaler cheese. The typical sweet flavor is chiefly due to bacteria which produce propionic acid, acetic acid, and carbon dioxide. The eyes are formed from the gas, mainly carbon dioxide, produced by these and other bacteria.
Krett and Stine (20) have found that the lower fatty acid content of a Swiss cheese generally indicates its quality.
A study of factors which may influence the amount and ratios of the volatile acids should be helpful in determining manufacturing and curing procedures …
The Influence Of Amounts Of Propionibacterium Shermanii On Eye Formation And Flavor Of Swiss Cheese, Dan G. Turner
The Influence Of Amounts Of Propionibacterium Shermanii On Eye Formation And Flavor Of Swiss Cheese, Dan G. Turner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Swiss cheese has been rightly called "king of the cheeses." It has been prized the world over for its stately appearance and sweet "hazelnut" flavor. In grading Swiss cheese, these two things, appearance and flavor, are important considerations in determining the cheese score. Appearance is judges according to the number, type, and size of eyes present in the cheese, with color and body and texture also considered. Flavor is judges according to the degree of sweetness and the amount and kinds of off flavors present.
In the past, there has been considerable variation in the quality of the Swiss cheese produces. …

Mileage Per First Service As Affected By Shape Of Area And Number Of Cows Serviced By A Technician Of A Utah Artificial Breeding Association, Geren V. Howell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Artificial insemination of dairy cattle is one of the recent enterprises of dairymen in this area. It is an enterprise which has expanded rapidly and will likely continue to expand during the next few years. In this area the technician or inseminator collects from $6.00 to $10.00 at the time of first service. This entitles the dairyman to two repeat inseminations for that cow, if necessary, to get the cow pregnant. Of this amount the technician receives $2.75. A bonus payment is made so that technicians inseminating fewer than 500 cows receive a total payment of $3.60. The bonus payment …
Notes Of The Ecology Of The Fresh-Water Mussels Of Dallas County, Louis B. Read, Kelly H. Oliver
Notes Of The Ecology Of The Fresh-Water Mussels Of Dallas County, Louis B. Read, Kelly H. Oliver
Field and Laboratory
The late John K. Strecker of the Baylor University Museum catalogued the Naiades of Texas in 1931. Since then, but little has been added to our knowledge of these mollusks in Texas. We need now, especially, studies on the general ecology of Texan species, with a modern revision of names, careful comparison of the synonymy, and close identification of Texas specimens in the museums. Last summer (1951) we made an ecological study of Parson's Slough in the southeastern part of Dallas County. In our work we gathered much information on the bivalve mollusks. Other data later gathered from this locality …
Synopsis Of The United States Species Of Lythrum (Lythraceae), Lloyd H. Shinners
Synopsis Of The United States Species Of Lythrum (Lythraceae), Lloyd H. Shinners
Field and Laboratory
Considerable difficulty was encountered in distinguishing the species of Lythrum found in north central Texas, and in deciding on the correct names for them. To dispose of a relatively small problem (only two species were involved), it has been necessary to undertake a study of the genus in the entire United States and Mexico. Because of lack of adequate collections, and lack of field acquaintance with any of them, those of the latter region have been omitted. Only two proved of any concern in treating those of the United States; they are noted briefly under L. californicum and L. alatum. …

The Pelvic Musculature Of Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.
The Pelvic Musculature Of Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.
Field and Laboratory
The musculature of the pelvis and hind-limb of salamanders as a group has received but little attention (Francis, 1934). The myology of Necturus has been studied even less than in certain other genera. It is true that many standard manuals of comparative anatomy list certain of the muscles of Necturus, but the descriptions made and names used in many cases are so variable as to be of little value. Mivart (1869) dissected one specimen of Necturus and sketchily presented his findings. Wilder (1908, esp. 1912, and 1923) did especially valuable work on the limb-muscles of Necturus; his descriptions will be …

An Improved Technique For The Demonstration Of Tissue Lipids, Bryan G. Hoerl
An Improved Technique For The Demonstration Of Tissue Lipids, Bryan G. Hoerl
Master's Theses (1922-2009) Access restricted to Marquette Campus
Progress in science frequently depends upon proper tools to demonstrate, enhance, integrate, substantiate or refute contentions. Among the means that make possible the advance of biological science is histological technique. Improved microscopic procedures result from a constant refining process and the search for new methods. To merit the adjective "improved" a new or refined technique must display a superiority to similarly employed processes. Such superiority might be shown by its speed, economy, practicality, ease or faithfulness of reproduction, or same other attribute. This paper portends to present an improved technique for the demonstration of tissue lipids .

Fruit Fly
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
Report from the Department of Agriculture's fruit fly inspectors indicate that satisfactory control of the pest is being maintained in commercial orchard areas, but heavy infestations are still being reported in some suburban districts. Among the host fruits recorded this season are citrus, apricots, peaches and mulberries. Fruit fly infestation in mulberries is of particular interest as until last year no official report had been made of fruit fly infestation in mulberries picked from the trees. On rare occasions, maggots have been found in masses of ripe fruit accumulating under the trees.
A Note On Chronic Footrot Of Dairy Cattle
A Note On Chronic Footrot Of Dairy Cattle
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
With the advent of treatment with ™ sodium sulphamezathine for footrot of dairy cattle, many of the troubles associated with this condition have largely been overcome.
However, the importance of early treatment is sometimes overlooked and Fig. 1.—Chronic footrot caused the ragged growth of new bone shown in the two lower pictures. At the top are the bones of a healthy foot from an animal of similar size. some farmers are inclined to blame the drug when treatment has been commenced after the animal has been affected for some time and a cure does not result. Why treatment is not …
Dingo And Wild Dog Destruction, A G. Moore
Dingo And Wild Dog Destruction, A G. Moore
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
It has often been said that poison is the best means of destroying dingoes and wild dogs. Poison acts silently and does not have the frightening effect of trapping. When used properly—on a well-planned system and at the right times— poisoning has given excellent results in controlling the pests.

Poison Plants Of Western Australia: The Thorn Apples (Datura Species), C A. Gardner, H W. Bennetts
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
Many garden enthusiasts are familiar with a shrub or small tree known as the "Angel's Trumpet" or "Trumpet-flowered Brugmansia." Some nurserymen call it "Brugsmania." There is another garden favourite which does not appear to possess a common name but is an annual or perennial plant from one to four feet in height, of summer growth and carrying erect violet or white trumpet-shaped flowers succeeded by large bristly or prickly pods. Both these are species of Datura. Another species is native to Western Australia while four more are introduced noxious weeds.
The Farm Bookshelf
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Worms In Sheep, C R. Toop
Worms In Sheep, C R. Toop
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
The parasitic worms of sheep are widely distributed throughout Australia and are a source of serious loss to the sheep and wool industry. This results from the loss of condition which occurs in infested animals as well as from the failure of young sheep to thrive and make normal growth, and there is a consequent reduction both in carcase values and in the quantity and quality of wool produced. Furthermore, heavy infestations with worms are frequently responsible for serious mortalities.

The Shorthorns, J A. Mallett
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3
Among "The Stud Farm of the World" the red, white and roan Shorthorns have always been given pride of place in the cattle section. They were the first of the popular cattle breeds existing today to be systematically improved, and at the present time approximately three-quarters of all the cattle in the British Isles carry a preponderance of Shorthorn blood.

Geology Of The Dallas Quadrangle, Carl N. Roberts
Geology Of The Dallas Quadrangle, Carl N. Roberts
Field and Laboratory
In the Dallas quadrangle, the Eagle Ford shale and Austin chalk, both Upper Cretaceous, are concealed over about 30% of the area by alluvial deposits of the Trinity River. The late Cenozoic history of the area has been one of progressive uplift with alternate episodes of channeling and filling along the Trinity and its tributaries. As a result, three and possibly four ancient floodplains now stand as terraces bordering the bottom-lands. The names and respective heights of these terraces above the Trinity River flood plain are as follows: Marsalis, 110 feet; Love Field, 70 feet; Travis School, 60 feet; and …

Mourning Dove Newsletter, Issue No. 7
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
This issue contains a summary of Mourning Dove populations data for assistance to the states and the Fish and Wildlife Service in preparing dove hunting regulations. It will also be of interest to all persons working on this important migratory game bird, whether in state game departments, institutions of learning, or individuals.
The previous issue was number 6, June 30, 1952. Since that date many of the southeastern dove projects have either been terminated or modified, so that information has not been gathered as extensively on populations during the past year as formerly. Consequently the major data available at this …
