Protein And Fat Requirements Of Baby Pigs, E. R. Peo, Jr., G. C. Ashton, V. C. Speer, D. V. Catron Jan 1957

Protein And Fat Requirements Of Baby Pigs, E. R. Peo, Jr., G. C. Ashton, V. C. Speer, D. V. Catron

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Present day research in swine nutrition with its early weaning programs and its use of the baby pig in biological assays has necessitated the determination of the nutritional requirements of the baby pig. The requirements for two of these nutrients (protein and fat) have not been clearly established. Early studies on the protein and fat requirements of baby pigs were conducted with liquid synthetic milk diets, which were formulated generally on the basis of the composition of sow milk.

Some Observations Pertaining To The Effects Of Relaxin Upon The Bovine, Vincent Allen Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of birth normally follows a set pattern. The main steps in chronological order are: labor, opening of the cervix, and delivering the young. The cervix serves an important function in reproduction. The cervix is the constricted portion separating the uterus and the vagina, and consists primarily of thick connective tissues especially constructed in folds forming a hollow tube. Through the cervix passes sperm, menstrual debris and in pregnancy the newborn. During pregnancy a mucous plug forms in the cervix and keeps out foreign material and bacteria. In the non-pregnant cow the opening is small. The cervix opening is …

Bloat Results From Various Drenchings Including Effectiveness Of Penicillin For Prevention, Clarence Leonard Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body conformation is associated with function among all classes of livestock. Dairy cattle type deals with characteristics indicating ability to produce milk and butterfat economically along with breed character and other values of an aesthetic nature. In order to have economical milk and butterfat production, the dairy cow should possess that type of body conformation which is able to withstand the rigors of disease, reproduction and year after year milk production. A large percentage of dairy cattle sold in South Dakota and surrounding territory, whether for breeding purpose or commercial production, are evaluated primarily on the basis of their type. …

A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner Jan 1957

A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The beef cattle industry is one og the major sources of rural income in South Dakota. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Services (1956), there were 1,492,000 beef cows and yearling beef heifers on the farms and ranches in South Dakota as of January 1, 1957. They also reported that sales from cattle and calves amounted to approximately 34.6 percent of the gross farm and ranch income in the state. Since the beef cattle industry is a major source of the farm and ranch income in South Dakota, any improvement in the performance of beef cattle will …

A Critical Study Of The Chromosomes In Two Species Of Myxophyceae, John Thomas Mullins Jan 1957

A Critical Study Of The Chromosomes In Two Species Of Myxophyceae, John Thomas Mullins

Master's Theses

The Myxophyoeae or blue-green algae have been frequent subjects for cytological investigation since Schmitz (1879) first called attention to two regions in the protoplast. Since that publication the morphological and chemical nature of the genetic material and the mechanism of cell division in the Myxophyceae has been a controversial subject, The evidence that has been presented is, tor the most part, more voluminous than enlightening.

This investigation was undertaken in order to verify the methods and check the results obtained with the smear technique by Strickland (1948). Additional methods were also applied which might enable a more critical evaluation of …

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

IN COMMON with the experience of most states, Nebraska's deer herds were reduced to a very low level by excessive harvests in our early history. Most American big-game animals were overharvested in the early history of this nation because of commercialization. Buffalo were killed for their hides, deer for their meat. This slaughter continued as long as the hunter (or poacher) could sell his take at a profit. Modem game management and public opinion reversed this trend. Deer are on the way back all over America, and in some states the protection-complex was so strong that deer were restored to …

The Effects Of Low Temperature On Survival Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows Jan 1957

The Effects Of Low Temperature On Survival Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the field of animal production, genetic characteristics determine to a large extent the quality and the economy of the cattle. To hasten the wide spread dissemination of germ plasm, many commercial farmers have resorted to artificial insemination. Artificial insemination has however, only allowed for the wide spread dissemination of germ plasm from the male. If the female germ plasm could also be more easily disseminated through the highly experimental process of ova transfer, then more than the average number of offspring could be expected from a female in her life time. Because ova transplantation is in its infancy, many …

An Ecological Survey Of The Vegetation Of The Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, Stanley L. Welsh Jan 1957

An Ecological Survey Of The Vegetation Of The Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, Stanley L. Welsh

Theses and Dissertations

The present work is a general survey of the vegetation of the Utah portion of the Dinosaur National Monument with special emphasis on some of the ecological aspects of the area. The vegetation ranges from xerophytic plant communities of the lower elevations to mesophytic communities of the higher elevations. Hydrophytic plant communities are also present to a limited extent along the Green River and where seeps or springs arise. Soils vary from fine clay to coarse gravel. The dividing lines between formations is often marked by extreme differences in soil type. During the author's first collecting trip into the Monument …

The Relation Of Spring Bird Distribution To A Vegetation Mosaic In Southeastern Washington, Paul A. Johnsgard, W. H. Rickard Jan 1957

The Relation Of Spring Bird Distribution To A Vegetation Mosaic In Southeastern Washington, Paul A. Johnsgard, W. H. Rickard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

Climax vegetation is of particular interest for study since it is the oldest and most stable vegetation of a region and should be expected to have a distinctive complement of animals. The purpose of this investigation was to observe the predilection of birds for stands representing climax plant associations in a remnant of native grassland in southeastern Washington.

The grasslands of this region were rapidly converted from grazing use to wheat production beginning about 65 years ago (Daubenmire 1942) and as a result only a few scattered remnants of native vegetation remain today. Associated with changes in vegetation there have …

Gyrodactylus Eucaliae N. Sp. (Trematoda: Monogenea) From The Brook Stickleback, Eucalia Inconstans*, Glenn L. Hoffman, Francis M. Ikezaki Jan 1957

Gyrodactylus Eucaliae N. Sp. (Trematoda: Monogenea) From The Brook Stickleback, Eucalia Inconstans*, Glenn L. Hoffman, Francis M. Ikezaki

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

A new species of Gyrodactylus was observed on the skin, gills, and fins of the brook stickleback from the English Coulee, Grand Forks, North Dakota during the summers of 1953-1955. Host-specificity is usually striking in the monogenetic trematodes and since this parasite was not observed on any other species of fish from this body of water or the nearby Turtle River, it was studied in detail and is here described as a new species, G. eucaliae.

New Polychrome Methods In Microtechnique, Celestino Nera Macabales Jan 1957

New Polychrome Methods In Microtechnique, Celestino Nera Macabales

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

When the writer took an introductory course in Microtechnique in 1954-55, he was impressed by the inadequacy of some microtechnical procedures recommended in triple staining, and he felt disappointed and discouraged by the consistently inferior results. He resolved to attempt modifications or to develop a new technique which could be relied upon to achieve anticipated results. This is a report on two years of efforts to develop a simple dependable technique in polychrome staining for histological studies. The writer feels that the results are of importance to students and teachers of biological science and to microtomists. The herein proposed technique …

The Rabbit : An Illustrated Anatomical Guide, Edwin Chin Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study on the anatomy of the rabbit was based on dissected material from the biological laboratories of the College of the Pacific. Because of existing errors in many of the present references to rabbit anatomy, the guide was prepared to meet the expressed need for a concise, illustrated outline of basic anatomy of the rabbit which might be used by students in an introductory course in mammalian or human anatomy. Since it is assumed that the guide would be supplemented by a dissection manual, syllabus, or textbook, textural material of such an outline is presented here in outline form.

Studies On The Trematode Larva Neascus, Thomas Reyes Jan 1957

Studies On The Trematode Larva Neascus, Thomas Reyes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the spring semesters of 1955 and 1956, while the writer was under the supervision of Dr. A. E. Noble, a preliminary survey was initiated on parasites in local fishes, amphibians, and reptiles occurring in the vicinity of Stockton, California. The collection of specimens in this survey included sixteen green sunfish, Lepomis cyanella, and two bluegills, L. macrochirus. Larval trematodes recovered from the heart and liver of these specimens belonged to the family Diplostomatidae Poirier (1886) which is characterized by a conspicuous constriction separating the fore and hind-bodies. The leaf-like forebody with the lateral borders converging ventrally to form a …

The Value Of Including Chemistry Content In The Study Of High School Biology, Ramon Duane Buckley Jan 1957

The Value Of Including Chemistry Content In The Study Of High School Biology, Ramon Duane Buckley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose was to evaluate the effect of including some definite chemistry content in high school biology. This evaluation was made by comparing outcomes of instruction in two different groups of a high school biology course. The two groups were equated in terms of the intelligence quotients, the sex, and the previous achievement in biology of the class members. The comparative gains in factual knowledge were measured by means of an evaluation test. The comparative gains in appreciations and interests in biology were measured with a questionnaire.

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook Dec 1956

Range Liverstock Nutrition And Its Importance In The Intermountain Region, C. Wayne Cook

Faculty Honor Lectures

It has been estimated that about 728 million acres or about 76 percent of the entire land area in the West is used for grazing (Stoddard and Smith 1956). In Utah about 93 percent of the land area or 48,900,000 acres is considered range land (Reuss and Blanch 1951). Although some of this range land is forested, a large area of it can be used only for grazing. Therefore, range livestock production is an important segment of western agriculture.

Before 19'00 most of the animals in the West grazed on the range all year. However, irrigation crop production has expanded …
