An Appraisal Of The Use Of Soil Survey Information As The Basis For Valuing Land For Tax Purposes In Spink County, South Dakota, Donald Dean Patterson Mar 1964

An Appraisal Of The Use Of Soil Survey Information As The Basis For Valuing Land For Tax Purposes In Spink County, South Dakota, Donald Dean Patterson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

There is, however, strong justification for enacting modifications in the structure of the property tax and seeking means of strengthening its administration. Historical trends are of special interest when studying the property tax because it has survived with few modifications during a period of changing economic conditions. Since its adoption in Colonial times, the nation's economy has passed from the agricultural to the present industrial stage. Many of today's property tax problems are related to those gradual changes in the economy of the country and in the needs of its citizens. These aspects of the property tax are also related …

Comparative Behavior And Relationships Of The Eiders, Paul A. Johnsgard Mar 1964

Comparative Behavior And Relationships Of The Eiders, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

Pair-forming and copulatory displays of the four species of eiders are described and illustrated, based on observations of captive and wild specimens. Behavioral differences indicate that two genera (Polysticta and Somateria) of eiders should be recognized, and that Lamponetta should be considered a synonym of Somateria. Racial differences in the displays of Somateria mollissima mollissima and S. m. v. nigra are explained on the basis of sympatry between the latter and S. fischeri, producing selection for display divergence that has not affected S. m. mollissima. Similarities in the behavior patterns of the eiders and the …

Comparison Of Alternative Beef Cattle Systems For Western South Dakota Ranches, Grant L. Cornelius Feb 1964

Comparison Of Alternative Beef Cattle Systems For Western South Dakota Ranches, Grant L. Cornelius

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Speculation often arises among ranchers that an increase in size of operation, a change from one type of system to another, or a modification of the present type of system may be profitable. This speculation is caused by cost and price changes which reduce net returns and make other types of operations appear to be more profitable. The objective of this study is to develop cost and return estimates of common types of cattle ranching systems and thereby determine whether such speculation is well founded.

Understanding Crop Pests, Air Applicator Institute Jan 1964

Understanding Crop Pests, Air Applicator Institute

Air Applicator Information Series

The first part of this volume presents in brief the life cycles of all the most important crop insect pests in the United States. Knowledge of the life cycle is necessary to a clear understanding of the insect and the injury which is often done by it in its larvae stage. The second part of this volume provides brief descriptions and illustrations of the most common weed pests and fungus diseases of crops in the United States.

Knowing Agricultural Chemicals, Air Applicator Institute

Air Applicator Information Series

The purpose of this book is to present brief descriptions of various chemicals used in agriculture. Insects and weed pests will be discussed only incidentally, as they are the subjects of other volumes of this information series. The reader who wishes to make a more detailed study of agricultural chemicals should consult the Bibliography in Volume Six for additional reference material.

Cell Mitosis During Skin Wound Healing, Frank M. Noice Jan 1964

Cell Mitosis During Skin Wound Healing, Frank M. Noice

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

It has been well documented that an open (incised) skin wound through the epidermis and into the underlying dermis, results in a rapid, within 24 hours, and abnormal rise in the epidermal mitotic rate. The mitotic rate may be more than ten times the normal maximum, and is highest among those cells closest to the wound edge and lowest, near the normal rate, about 1 mm. from the wound edge. The decreasing mitotic rate within 1 mm. of the wound edge holds quite constant regardless of the size of the open wound. The theoretical explanation of this situation is presented …

Nesting Habits Of The Soft-Shelled Turtles (Trionyx Sp.), Rory Neil Vose Jan 1964

Nesting Habits Of The Soft-Shelled Turtles (Trionyx Sp.), Rory Neil Vose

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Soft-shelled turtles (Trionyx Sp.) are common along the Mississippi River but, in spite of their abundance, the literature contains very few accounts of their life history, particularly with respect to nesting. The principal contributions concerning the ecology of Trionyx have been made by Breckenridge (1944); Cahn (193 7); Carr (1952); Ditmars (1936); and Pope (1939 and 1955).

The present study was undertaken to learn more about the nesting habits of the Trionyx turtles in the area near Winona, Minnesota. Because of the great similarity between species of Trionyx turtles, and because close observation would have disturbed their normal nesting activities, …

Cedar Creek Natural History Area, 1963, William H. Marshall

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper is to inform members of the Minnesota Academy of Science and other citizens of the state as to the present status of the Cedar Creek Natural History Area. It is necessary for several reasons: first, as an opportunity to fully acquaint you with the contributions of the late Dr. Arthur N. Wilcox and Dean T. H. Fenske, and second, because we are entering a new phase in the evolution of the project.

Populations Of Peritrichs On The Pond Snail, Physa Gyrina Say, Peter Moyle Jan 1964

Populations Of Peritrichs On The Pond Snail, Physa Gyrina Say, Peter Moyle

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

There are many obscure niches in a, pond that make fascinating ecological studies. The shell of a pond snail such as Physa gyrina Say, is one of these. In this study alone, 18 species of attached animals and plants were found growing on P; gyrina shells. About half of these species occurred on the shells in large numbers and completed a large part of their life cycle there. On P. gyrina, the most abundant animals included three species of protowans and a tendipedid larva. The protozoan species, Epistylus niagarae Stokes, Opercularia ramosa Stokes, and V orticella campanula Ehrenberg all belong …

Henry George In England, Milton A. Ochsner Jan 1964

Henry George In England, Milton A. Ochsner

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The forward rush of the Industrial Revolution had already by the tum of the 19th century silenced the hand looms in England and sent their operators to the city and its factories. Once there, the masses and their government fell prey to all the problems attendant to rapid and disorderly industrialization of which high rent, periodic unemployment, and labor unrest were just a few. The fundamental homogeneous outlook which the British had always somehow maintained in the face of other crises was now threatened anew. This was a new misery that gripped the land. It struck hardest at those who …

The rate of fixation of carbon dioxide in vivo into aspartate, glutamate, oxoglutarate, and glutamine of cerebral cortex and liver in the absence and presence of elevated concentrations of tissue ammonia was studied. The specific activities of the isolated metabolites were related to the specific activity of the tissue CO2. It was attempted to obtain an approximate steady state level of tissue 14CO2 by maintaining a constant isotope concentration in the venous and arterial blood through continuous intravenous administration of NaH14CO3. 1. In the absence of ammonia, aspartic acid achieved the highest specific activity in both brain and liver; the …

Species Composition Within States For The 1962-63 And 1963-64 Hunting Seasons, Glen Smart Jan 1964

Species Composition Within States For The 1962-63 And 1963-64 Hunting Seasons, Glen Smart

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

This paper considers the species composition of the duck kill in each State as determined by the Duck Wing Collection Surveys during 1962-63 and 1963-64 hunting seasons. Two-thirds of the annual kill was made up of mallards, black ducks, pintails, wood ducks, and green-winged teal. Mallards were the most common species taken in all Flyways except the Atlantic where the black duck was most abundant.

The American Eagles And Their Economic Status, E. R. Kalmbach, Ralph H. Imler, Lee W. Arnold Jan 1964

The American Eagles And Their Economic Status, E. R. Kalmbach, Ralph H. Imler, Lee W. Arnold

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

For centuries eagles have captured the fancy of man the world over. Because of its extensive range in the northern hemisphere, the golden eagle is the most widely known of this group of birds. Its use in falconry was the sport of kings. The frequency of its appearance in royal coats of arms indicated its importance. It is the national emblem of Germany and Mexico.

In North America the bald eagle as well as the golden eagle represents this group of powerful birds of prey. The bald eagle is strictly an American species, and the founders of the United States …

Insect Pests Of Cotton In The Ord River Irrigation Area, K T. Richards Jan 1964

Insect Pests Of Cotton In The Ord River Irrigation Area, K T. Richards

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

COTTON is grown in the Ord Valley of north Western Australia, mainly as an annual, irrigated crop during the hot summer months of the "wet season".

It is usually planted in November-December and harvested March-May.

This period of growth corresponds closely to that of maximum insect activity.
