Genotype And Variability In Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Barr
Genotype And Variability In Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Barr
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
In quantitative genetics, the variation of individuals within genetic groups is commonly attributed to environment. The assumption is then made that the environmental variances are similar from one group to another. Complications arise in the application of selection index theory when this assumption is not made. The results reported here indicate that in a population of dairy records, the environmental variance is not similar from one genetic group to another. Johnson (1945) and Wadell, Van Vleck and Henderson (1960) found similar results with fewer data.

Marketing And Other Factors Affecting The Cattle Feeding Enterprise In Eastern South Dakota, Gerald Marousek
Marketing And Other Factors Affecting The Cattle Feeding Enterprise In Eastern South Dakota, Gerald Marousek
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
The marketing aspects of the cattle feeding operation are vitally important to its financial success. Decisions concerning transportation rates, grade specifications, market information, and many others cannot be made or put into effect by individual action. Often financial, legislative, and legal considerations are involved. In order to gain knowledge concerning the marketing aspects of cattle feeding in South Dakota, the cooperation of established feeders was sought. Cooperators supplied information on present and expected future operations, both individual and for the geographic area over which they had knowledge.
Mites On Kangaroo Rats At The Nevada Test Site, Morris A. Goates
Mites On Kangaroo Rats At The Nevada Test Site, Morris A. Goates
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
A systematic study of parasitic mites on kangaroo rats of two species at the Nevada Test Site was conducted from August 1959 to December 1961. The intent was to determine the kinds, numbers, seasonal occurrences and ecological relationships of mites in nuclear disturbed and contiguous undisturbed areas. A total of 1,256 rats from nine plant communities was examined.
The 6,208 mites collected represented 16 species including four undescribed. Fourteen were found on both kinds of rats. Considerably more rats were infested with chiggers than with mesostigmatids. Each species of mite occurred alone on its host at least 20% of the …

Cost Of Producing And Marketing Finished Beef In Relation To Consuming Areas, David A. Myers
Cost Of Producing And Marketing Finished Beef In Relation To Consuming Areas, David A. Myers
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
South Dakota exports a large part of its agricultural production. The commodities exported and the form in which they are exported are determinants of the returns producers receive for the employment of their resources. The objectives of this study were: (1) To determine the principal costs for bringing beef cattle from 400 pound weight to a finished weight of 1150 pounds in South Dakota and in other selected areas. Two main categories of cost are purchase price of the animal and feed costs. (2) To compare the cost of marketing beef produced in South Dakota with beef produced in selected …

Variability Of Feed Grain And Forage Production In South Dakota, Edward Dailey
Variability Of Feed Grain And Forage Production In South Dakota, Edward Dailey
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
The volume of feed grain and roughage production varies from year to year and the variation in South Dakota is sizable. This variation has a bearing on the extent to which cattle feeding is carried out in South Dakota. It helps to explain why different areas or regions have unlike rates of expansion. It is important that this variation be recognized for there are a number of sound farm management practices which can be used to reduce instability and uncertainty. Feeders in some areas must make more provisions to increase stability than others. Stabilization of feed grain and roughage availability …

Respiration Studies Of Rattus Rattus And Citellus Lateralis Brain Tissue Slices At 20 And 37 C, Sonja Hyduke
Biology ETDs
The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent of temperature and substrate dependence of brain tissue metabolism in hibernating animals. Possible cellular adaptations to low temperatures may indicate mechanisms possessed by the hibernator to maintain neural functions at low temperature. Oxygen consumption of brain tissue slices from homeothermic rats and active and hibernating ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis) was to describe the effect of temperature on rates of utilization of several substrates.
