Responsible Practices For Responsible Libraries: The Role Of Libraries In A World Of Generative Ai, Samantha Seah
Responsible Practices For Responsible Libraries: The Role Of Libraries In A World Of Generative Ai, Samantha Seah
Research Collection Library
This presentation focuses on generative AI images and potential information literacy and ethical issues relating to the use and creation of AI images. Generative AI technology has made the creation and modification of images easier and more accessible to a layperson. However images are often overlooked in information literacy programmes despite growing evidence that people consume most information through visual and video formats thanks to the rise of social media platforms like TikTok. This presentation will consider ACRL’s framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, whereby in looking at information creation as a process, we need to not only look …

The Idea Book Club And Tigers Advance: Bringing Faculty And Staff Together To Discuss Equity In Higher Education, Renna Redd
Presentations
The IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness) Book Club was established during the Fall 2019 semester by former Director of Diversity Education Moryah Jackson and Interlibrary Loan Librarian Renna Redd as a continuing education initiative for employees to create a shared syntax and expand collective awareness of the complexities within higher education in South Carolina and the United States through reading and discussing a common text. One of the goals of the initiative was to provide free copies of the selected book to participants so that they could participate without financial commitment, not increase screen time unnecessarily, and share the …

Ask The Better Question: Using Bigfoot To Introduce Constructive Approaches To Authority, Kate Wimer
Faculty Publications - George Fox University Library
Librarians know that authority is constructed and contextual, but getting our students there can feel as elusive as Sasquatch himself. Our Bigfoot-themed classroom activity pursues a strengths-based approach, challenging increasing incredulity for new information and checklist research mentalities among our undergraduates. It asks students to ignore the good source/bad source dichotomy in favor of the question, "What can I learn from this source?". This session will explain how we started with the BEAM rhetorical framework, showcase our materials and method, and discuss our love of Bigfoot as an accessible topic for students learning to challenge their existing mindsets.
Participants will: …

Peer Review Validation: Tracking Scholarly Activity In A Repository, Amanda Schwartz
Peer Review Validation: Tracking Scholarly Activity In A Repository, Amanda Schwartz
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Providence’s institutional repository Digital Commons launched in 2018, serving as the enterprise’s scholarly activity repository. After several years of successful repository usage and readership tracking, research administration initiated a new request: peer review tracking. The repository previously tracked number of article submissions but did not assess if content was published in peer reviewed journals. How can we retroactively and proactively track peer reviewed articles on our institutional repository? Simple ask, complicated answer.
Library staff had no previous practices in place to record whether content was peer reviewed or not. The initial request seemed simple, yetbecame increasingly complex to create both …

Learning From Each Other: Results From The First Year Of A Peer-Reviewed Literature Searching Project, Heather Martin, Danielle Linden, Carrie Grinstead
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Program Objectives:
Amidst shrinking staffing levels and expanding business, a health system library department developed a peer-learning program in order to build literature search capacity and self-efficacy amongst librarians and library support staff.
Description:
Library staff are partnered and rotate monthly; pairs include those in same and different job roles and experience levels. Staff are encouraged to choose real patron clinical questions that would serve as optimal learning opportunities, reinforcing best practices in search strategy and/or database functionality or ones that are particularly challenging. Partners independently perform the other’s search then meet virtually to compare results, strategies, and debrief …

Individual Research Consultations And Undergraduate Social Work Students: Understanding Feelings, Thoughts, And Actions During The Information Search Process, Patrick Leeport
Education Doctorate Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative case study is to build an understanding of the impact of individual research consultations (IRCs) on upper-level undergraduate social work students’ feelings, thoughts, and actions during the information search process. The purpose and research questions of this study were guided by Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process framework (Kuhlthau, 2004). Seven student participants were sampled from a social work research seminar course at a regional university in northern Minnesota. The information search processes of participants were recorded before and after an IRC with a liaison librarian, using screencast videography (SCV) methods. SCV methods involved having participants share …

The 2023 Black History Month program at The Art Institute of Atlanta is described. The program entailed the use of LibGuides to assist students in identifying figures in African American history, specifically individuals who were pioneers in the students' fields of study. Students were provided access to a large paper banner to create tributes to the figures they discovered using the LibGuide.

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month is observed annually in the U.S. during May and recognizes the achievements and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Americans in the history, culture, and achievements of our country.
The legacy of the AAPI community dates back to the earliest arrival of Asian immigrants to North America and the contributions of families and individuals continue to shape the heritage of the lower Rio Grande Valley.
This exhibit documents Asian exclusion and anti-immigration as well as the historical contributions and achievements of our APA community in the Valley.
