Library Publishing Curriculum
In 2018, The Educopia Institute and the Library Publishing Coalition (LPC), in partnership with the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), NASIG, and BlueSky to BluePrint, released the first iteration of the “Library Publishing Curriculum,” a suite of synchronous and asynchronous professional development offerings for librarians. The four initial modules—Content, Impact, Policy, and Sustainability—were funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Sciences and address major competencies in library publishing. As part of the sustainability plan for these grant deliverables, the LPC created an editorial board that would steer future iterations of the curriculum. They took as their first task a step …

Forward-Looking Academic Impact Rankings For U.S. Law Schools, Matthew Sag
Forward-Looking Academic Impact Rankings For U.S. Law Schools, Matthew Sag
Faculty Articles
Although the very concept of law school rankings is currently under fire, rankings abolitionism is misplaced. Given the number, diversity, and geographic dispersion of the more than 190 law schools fully accredited by the American Bar Association, rankings are essential to enable various stakeholders to make comparisons between schools. However, the current rankings landscape is dire. The U.S News law school rankings rely on poorly designed, highly subjective surveys to gauge "reputational strength," rather than looking to easily available, objective citation data that is more valid and reliable. Would-be usurpers of U.S. News use better data but make other arbitrary …

Investigation Of Information-Seeking Behavior Of Secondary School English Teachers In Batam City, Indonesia For Lesson Plan Preparation, Rayhan Musa Novian
Investigation Of Information-Seeking Behavior Of Secondary School English Teachers In Batam City, Indonesia For Lesson Plan Preparation, Rayhan Musa Novian
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis examines the information sources chosen by secondary school English teachers for lesson planning, alongside their information awareness and the constraints encountered. A lesson plan acts as a teacher's guide, detailing student learning objectives, associated resources and activities, and ensuring compliance with local and national curricula. This qualitative research employed semi-structured interviews with 15 English teachers from secondary schools in Batam City, Indonesia, using the Zoom platform. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze the data. Results reveal a three-stage pattern in teachers' selection and use of information sources: primary, secondary, and tertiary stages. Initially, teachers rely on formal internal …

Perception Of The Tiktok's Content About Dieting And Workout Towards Body Image Among Thai Teenagers, Arnond Iamsudha
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Short content about idealized body images, such as dieting and workouts on TikTok, has influenced teenagers' perceptions of body image due to frequent comparisons. This research examined a relationship between Thai teenagers' perception of TikTok's dieting and workout content concerning their body image and overall appreciation of their bodies. A sample of 516 Thai teenagers indicated their level of agreement with statements about the perception of their body image after watching these videos. The Body Appreciation Scale was used to measure teenagers' overall perceptions of their body image. The research findings revealed that the majority of respondents agreed that watching …

How Poor Leadership And Favoritism Intersect To Create Toxic Work Environments, Simone Williams, Lora Del Rio
How Poor Leadership And Favoritism Intersect To Create Toxic Work Environments, Simone Williams, Lora Del Rio
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Discussions about leadership in academic libraries rarely focus on the negative; they mostly focus on best practices of leadership. There is hardly any discussion of poor leadership, nor is there a rigorous discussion of concerning behaviors that poor leaders engage in, such as favoritism. Concomitantly, there is little to no discussion about how to identify and address behaviors that poor leaders engage in and how academic libraries can change toxic institutional culture. In this chapter, we are interested in defining poor leadership and favoritism to change toxic institutional cultures and give voice to those who are affected by poor leadership …

Efficiently Learning An Encoder That Classifies Token Replacements And Masked Permuted Network-Based Bigru Attention Classifier For Enhancing Sentiment Classification Of Scientific Text, Muhammad Inaam Ul Haq, Khalid Mahmood, Qianmu Li, Ashok Kumar Das, Sachin Shetty, Majid Hussain
VMASC Publications
The exponential growth of scientific literature in digital repositories poses challenges in interpreting complex attitudes within academic texts. Traditional sentiment analysis methods often struggle with nuanced word meanings due to contextual variations. To address this, we propose the Electra-MPNet-based BiGRU attention classifier that extracts the high-level semantic features from citation sentences using the combined strength of Electra and MPNet encoder layers. These features are then combined to extract long-range dependencies through a stacked BiGRU layer. A linear attention mechanism is imposed to estimate the attention weights and context vector which enables the model to selectively focus on relevant information. The …

This chapter provides practical advice and reasons for school leaders to support students' intellectual freedom through their support of school libraries and school librarians. The chapter begins with a short but critical literature review that includes case law on the topic of censorship in schools. The concerns of teachers and librarians from a recent study are summarized and help build the foundation for practical and ready to use advice for any school leaders to uphold the intellectual freedom of all students.
More Than Censorship: The Harm Of Libricide, James M. Donovan
More Than Censorship: The Harm Of Libricide, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Libricide, although often deemed an extreme instance of censorship, is altogether different. Censorship involves the suppression of particular books due to alleged inappropriate content; libricide refers to the intentional destruction of entire libraries. Understanding the differing motives recognizes that the library is more than the books it contains, and is instead an institution rooted in its history of selection and use by the local community. Over time, the library reflects the users’ identity, a reminder that any aggressor would wish to eliminate when the goal is pacification by erasure of a population’s memory and history. Prerequisites for an act of …
How Does The Transition From A Subject-Based Allocation Fund Structure To A One-Pot Allocation Fund Structure Impact Librarian Spending And Attitudes Toward Spending?: One Libraries' Experience With A One-Pot Allocation Approach For One-Time Acquisitions Spending, Anne Larrivee
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Every fiscal year, academic libraries must decide how to fairly allocate funds for their collection of one-time materials. A common approach is to divide these one-time funds between subject areas based on historic, quantitative, or expressed needs. A less mainstream approach is to combine all these funds into a single source of funds for one-time purchases. This article examines librarian response after transitioning from a subject-based allocation to a one-pot allocation approach for its one-time acquisitions. Methods of expenditure analysis and semi-structured interviews were used to assess the approach's effectiveness and librarian attitudes. The results of this study provide a …
Improving Inclusion With Universal Design In The Academic Library Hiring Process, Katelyn Quirin Manwiller, Heather Crozier, Samantha Peter
Improving Inclusion With Universal Design In The Academic Library Hiring Process, Katelyn Quirin Manwiller, Heather Crozier, Samantha Peter
University Libraries Faculty Publications
To improve inclusion in academic library hiring practices, we must evaluate and prioritize addressing the barriers that currently exist in the process for LIS workers with marginalized identities. With the prevalence of disability in America, lack of representation in librarianship, and inherently intersectional nature of disability inclusion, it is essential that academic librarianship work to recruit and retain disabled librarians. Disability affects people in a variety of ways. Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. As a result, broader disability inclusion techniques based on the principles of Universal Design are needed to remove barriers for disabled librarians during the hiring process.

More Alike Than Not: The Open Access Preferences Of Humanities Scholars, Rachel Scott, Ana Dubnjakovic
Faculty and Staff Publications
Several studies have noted that humanists have not been as quick or enthusiastic in their adoption of Open Access (OA) as their colleagues in other disciplines. This article leverages the Ithaka S+R US 2021 Faculty Survey to provide contextualized analysis of the OA and Open Education Resources (OER) preferences of humanities scholars, as well as some practices related to OA and OER, relative to their colleagues in other disciplines. Findings suggest that although humanists do stand apart in many OA preferences, the small effect sizes render these differences less important than previously suspected. The implications of these findings are considered …

The Persistent Treatise, Dana Neacsu, Paul Douglas Callister
Law Faculty Publications
The legal treatise remains a pillar of the American legal system and the rule of law, despite claims it might be dying and variations in quantitative citations to treatises over time. Indeed, several treatises evidence increased citation in U.S. Supreme Court opinions during the last several decades. Surprisingly, the U.S. Supreme Court, including the Robert’s Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, increasingly sees fit to rely on proto-treatises, such as Bracton, Coke, and Blackstone. This article provides empirical data and qualitative analysis to support this claim, highlighting the sometimes declining but nevertheless significant presence of treatises in …

Yliopistojen rahoitusmallissa tärkeää roolia näyttelevä Julkaisufoorumi (JUFO) on virallisesti tarkoitettu laajempien julkaisumäärien tarkasteluun.

Wait, We’Re Invited, Too? An Academic Social Justice Book Club For The Community (A Case Study), Amanda Boyer, Amir El-Chidiac
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
Political tensions, racial reckoning, and rising book challenges have led to deeper polarization in the United States, especially in Pennsylvania, where there is already an even divide between liberals and conservatives. The increasing division led two librarians from the Susquehanna University Blough-Weis Library (2021) to initiate a Social Justice Book Club. This club aimed to unite the campus and local communities to grapple with social justice issues in a safe environment. Librarians had concerns when starting the club due to the regional tensions. Still, they were determined to find a way to safely allow everyone involved to learn more about …

Using Early Responses To Wikipedia And Google To Consider Chatgpt, David A. Hurley
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
ChatGPT and other generative AIs are raising important issues in information literacy that are unique, but not without precedent. The rise of Google and Wikipedia were accompanied by similar paradigm shifts. Exploring librarians’ early responses to these tools allows us to use that history to inform our approach to generative AIs. This exploratory study looks at social media posts, including email listservs, as well as sampling the professional literature to see librarians’ reactions in terms of impacts on the profession and the resulting pedagogical approaches to teaching information literacy in the early days of Google and Wikipedia.

Subvert The Dominant Paradigm: Reimagining Academic Library Hiring Processes, Xan Arch, Isaac P. Gilman
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
For libraries dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion, it is crucial to address firmly-held traditions about “correct” hiring practices. This work of revising traditional practices can be a fraught process, as different stakeholders often hold strong opinions about how best to evaluate candidates and conduct successful searches. To move our two academic libraries toward more inclusive hiring practices, we each led internal processes to entirely revise our hiring manuals. We will discuss the challenges and core issues addressed through this work, and the resulting principles that we believe will result in a more equitable, transparent, and candidate-friendly process.
