This chapter explores the critical role of collection development policies in libraries, particularly in supporting and defending LGBTQ+ collections. The authors argue that a robust, regularly updated, and transparent collection development policy is essential for ensuring equitable representation and resisting censorship. They emphasize that such policies must account for the needs of historically underserved communities, including LGBTQ+ populations, and serve as tools for advocacy and defense against internal and external challenges.

This chapter explores the emotional, professional, and political costs faced by librarians advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion and intellectual freedom within libraries. Through personal narrative and critical reflection, the authors introduce the concept of "queer battle fatigue"—a framework for understanding the cumulative psychological toll on LGBTQ+ individuals who are consistently placed in advocacy roles within predominantly cisheteronormative institutions. A case study of a drag storytime event at a university library illustrates the social backlash, institutional pressures, and moral injury experienced by organizers, demonstrating how well-intentioned programming can become flashpoints for political controversy. This study sought to revisit established definitions of critical visual literacy and determine how this concept could be re-envisioned specifically for picture books when informed by the approaches of teacher education students who had received limited prior formal instruction on critiquing visual texts. Seventeen sophomore elementary education students engaged in written self-discourse around the visual narrative of Milo Imagines the World written by Matt de la Peña and illustrated by Christian Robinson where they generated questions and answers critically engaging with the visuals. The editors, drawing from personal experiences and professional challenges, reflect on the increasing sociopolitical hostility toward LGBTQ+ communities and the parallel rise in restrictions within library spaces. On the Books in South Carolina: Mining for Jim Crow Laws is a collections-as-data and machine learning project by the University of South Carolina Libraries (USC), sub awarded by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, for the period of May 2022 - December 2024. Following UNC’s steps from their first year of the grant, the USC project created a text corpus of South Carolina state legislature acts passed in the period from Reconstruction through the Civil Rights Movement (1868-1968). The USC team then utilized machine learning techniques to …

Librarianship is one such path for which DePauw graduates are well-prepared. This chapter explores the rarely discussed but impactful issue of internal censorship within academic libraries, focusing on challenges to LGBTQ+ materials. Drawing on personal experiences at a regional public university in the American South, the author recounts multiple instances where library staff and leadership acted in ways that undermined the inclusion of LGBTQ+ resources. These incidents ranged from quietly removing or hiding books to resisting the addition of LGBTQ+ periodicals and graphic novels, and even denying purchase requests without explanation. Announcement of the City of Savannah Municipal Archives' Community Memory Project, an initiative to collect and preserve the stories and memories of Savannah's diverse communities. The project invites all Savannah residents to contribute their photographs, stories, and artifacts that document the city's rich history and cultural heritage. Its first project is a collection of funeral programs (primarily African American), now available via the Digital Library of Georgia.

This lecture reflects on the transformative role of libraries as cultural bridges in an increasingly interconnected world, through a comprehensive review and analysis of international library systems. Employing a qualitative methodology combining institutional ethnography with comparative case analysis across European, Asian, and Latin American contexts, the research examines how libraries work as catalysts for cross-cultural understanding. The investigation reveals four significant findings for libraries as dynamic cultural institutions: regional approaches to library service delivery, successful frameworks for balancing digital transformation with cultural preservation, emerging paradigms for international collaboration, and the critical importance of multilingual and multicultural competencies in modern libraries. …

Barriers To Open Access Publishing In The Arts And Humanities: Real, Artificial, Superficial?, Lindsey Skaggs, Rachel Scott, Colby Cilento

Although open access (OA) has the capacity to democratize knowledge and access for readers worldwide, arts and humanities scholars do not publish their work OA as frequently as their colleagues in the sciences. A variety of factors contribute to their relative lack of engagement with OA publishing, including disparities in research funding, the format of research outputs, and the availability and prestige of OA publishing venues. In this session, we will report on interviews conducted with arts and humanities scholars that explored participants’ approaches to OA, their motivations for engaging with OA, and the barriers they encounter.

This lecture presented at Texas Woman’s University in January 2025 examines the evolution of cross-cultural leadership in libraries through an innovative theoretical framework that synthesizes Goleman's emotional intelligence model (Goleman, 1995), Morin's theories (Morin, 2001), and Olarongbe's cross-cultural leadership paradigm (Olarongbe, 2023). Through a mixed-methods approach combining autoethnographic analysis with comparative case studies across French, Chilean, and American library systems, the study describes the emergence of my "Latin Way" leadership model mainly characterized by adaptability and community-centeredness and identifies three key dimensions of effective cross-cultural library leadership: the critical role of cultural competency in institutional transformations; the integration of traditional …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The International Classification of Headache Disorders, Third Edition (ICHD-3), significantly influences clinicians' understanding of headache disorders. In this study, we aim to elucidate how the hierarchical structure of ICHD-3 shapes the understanding of interconnectivity among headache disorders.

METHODS: A network comprises elements known as "nodes," with the connections between them referred to as "edges." In our study, a node represents a headache diagnosis that meets at least one ICHD-3 diagnostic criterion of the ICHD-3. We developed two network models for ICHD-3: a non-hierarchical model, where edges are only formed by cross-references found within the text of diagnoses, …

Becoming published authors presents a learning curve for graduate students. Publishing literacy is part of the hidden curriculum of graduate school because publishing is generally not taught consistently but more commonly through ad hoc conversations with advisors, advice from peers, and the occasional workshop. Our study surveyed graduate students at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) who had already published or were expecting to publish journal articles. Survey questions asked students about the publishing process, defined by us as the stage of the post-writing process when a manuscript is ready to publish. On Friday, September 6, 2024, the learning sciences field lost a giant in Dr. Nora Sabelli, 87 years old, a personal mentor to many researchers and an inspiration to so many learning scientists and STEM leaders. Nora’s first professional career was as a computational chemist, and later she became a passionate leader in research for improving STEM education. Nora’s time as a senior program officer at the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Education and Human Resources (EHR) directorate was legendary; she was a force of nature who reshaped funding priorities for stronger science and a stronger connection of science to education …

Academic libraries have long supported faculty’s use of reading lists. The need for this support has only increased with the growing popularity of distance learning as well as the shifting resource use patterns brought on by online learning during the covid-19 pandemic. However, reading list software can be pro-hibitively expensive while not always meeting faculty needs, and traditional print-based course reserves can only be accessed in person in the library, creating unnecessary barriers for students.
