In researching acts of activism and care in Canadian queer and trans racialized history, I examined how Rupert Raj advocated and cared for other trans individuals through his writing in the 1980s and 1990s. He noticed that there were few publications for trans individuals so he created easily accessible methods to share vital information regarding research and support that would have otherwise been difficult to acquire. Raj’s writings shared vital transgender research, literature, and expertise from across the globe. Artificial Intelligence In Special Libraries In Africa For Selective Dissemination Of Information: Any Need?, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The study applied a descriptive survey design with a sampled population of 48 special librarians selected through purposive sampling techniques from 24 special libraries in Africa. The study was guided by four research objectives. The main instrument used for data collection was a 4 point scaled questionnaires scaled in that 1 = “strongly disagree” and 4 = “strongly agree”. The instrument was validated by three experts in measurement and evaluation from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria and further subjected to internal consistency test using Cronbach’s alpha. An academic health sciences library hosted a grant-funded living library program titled “Bringing Stories of Women’s Health to the Forefront.” With a campus that is increasingly focused on incorporating the humanities into medical education, the library added to this momentum by offering a program which encouraged empathy through the art of storytelling. The program was delivered via three routes: an in-person event for the city’s metro community, a virtual event for the university community and their clinical partners, and oral interview video recordings that are hosted on the library website. Critical visual literacy (CVL) is the ability to evaluate and deconstruct the sociocultural contexts in which visuals are produced and viewed, and is a core skill for students to develop. This poster will present prominent definitions of CVL, compared against the results of a research study in which undergraduate students critically analyzed a children’s picture book and developed their own definition of CVL. Associated research and instructional methods will be discussed. Attendees will learn about CVL as an interdisciplinary concept and will be encouraged to adapt the authors’ methods to advance their own understanding of and teaching with CVL.

With the increased interest in evidence synthesis research in social sciences and fields outside of the health sciences, more librarians are actively involved in consulting and collaborating with researchers, with some also participating as co-authors on projects (Chapman, 2021; Kogut, Ramirez, & Foster, 2022). Based on individual requests, librarians may conduct comprehensives searches, document and report searches to ensure reproducibility, and/or assist with question refinement, protocol development, citation management tools, and evidence synthesis software.

In 2018, we distributed a call for proposals to academic librarians at public and private community colleges and universities to seek potential ideas for chapters to include in our upcoming publication, Leading Change in Academic Libraries. We solicited proposals from potential authors to describe and reflect on “a recent change in their academic library in which they worked with others in the organization to reorganize, reengineer, innovate, or initiate a service, program, function or structure in [their] library.” In total, we received 115 proposals on various issues, which coalesced …

Although many universities have adopted student management systems (SMS) such as Navigate or Starfish to track and communicate with students about their academic progress, libraries have had little involvement with these platforms. This poster presents a case study of a Library’s integration as a referral point in Navigate. Faculty are now able to raise ad-hoc alerts that refer students to research support at the library. In addition to providing another avenue of research support, librarians are also able to keep faculty informed throughout the process, something not integrated into other systems of library support.

As anti-DEI legislation spreads and the February 2025 “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights deems DEI programs federally unlawful, faculty—particularly contingent instructors—may self-censor DEI discussions out of concern for job security. This lightning talk examines how OER librarians can support faculty in navigating these challenges by leveraging adaptable Open Educational Resources (OER) and open pedagogy to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The research productivity of academic staff measures their status in the academic world. As a result this study investigated use of online information resources and academic staff research productivity. A survey research design was used, in which the population consist of academic staff in public universities in Ogun State. Proportionate random sampling technique was used to select 158 respondents that represented the sample size. SPSS was used for data analyses, using percentage, means and standard deviations. Information-seeking has long been the subject of theoretical modeling, often drawing from cognitive, behavioral, computational, and even evolutionary perspectives to explain how individuals navigate, filter, and utilize information. Several dominant frameworks—Carol Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process, Marcia Bates’ Berrypicking Model, Peter Pirolli & Stuart Card’s Information Foraging Theory, Kiyohiko Nakamura’s Information Criteria framework, and Ian Ruthven’s Information Shaping Theory —have provided structured ways of understanding how people interact with information environments. However, while these frameworks offer valuable insights, they often operate within mechanistic or efficiency-driven paradigms, which risk overlooking the complex, embodied, and socioculturally situated nature of human information behaviors.
