The philosophy of Open Educational Resources (OER), at its core, seeks to facilitate student access to equitable education through the open sharing of learning materials. Discourse around OER has historically foregrounded how the circulation of open materials reduces costs for students and increases accountability for textbook publishers to make their copyrighted materials more affordable. The purpose of the study is to evaluate library schools’ curricula in Nigeria with the aim of identifying a practical course on computer literacy to solve the problem of lack of ICT staff as noted by several studies conducted on the African continent. The study covered 30 universities offering Library and Information Science. The main instrument for data collection was analysis of departmental documents containing the LIS curriculum. Some library and information science educators and students were also interviewed on the availability of computer laboratories in the LIS department for students to acquire computer skills. Ishi, the “last wild Indian in North America,” was “discovered” in 1911 and spent the last years of his life living in an anthropology museum. There he was studied by anthropologists and viewed by the public as a living exhibit. In this paper, I take some initial steps in arguing that Ishi, the person, became a document to most people. The similarities between Ishi and Suzanne Briet’s hypothetical antelope, newly discovered and placed in a zoo, are eerie. Ishi, like the antelope, is brought into public knowledge as both an initial document and a wide variety of secondary documents derived …

Librarians are confronting a shift in media that is changing the structure and the collections of libraries as well as the meaning of librarianship itself. The heart of this essay suggests that the physical book maybe considered an enduring communication vessel. If the goal of the library is to offer access to the cultural record, then physical books as a social record embodying “bookness” hold a place within the library institution as a material expression of the intimate and enduring relationship between human and book.

Hot Dog: the Regular Fellow’s Monthly was a satirical magazine published by the Merit Publishing Company in Cleveland, Ohio throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Editor Jack Dinsmore included crudely humorous short stories and poems, images of scantily clad women, and editorials and opinion pieces offering his own commentary on current events. In the case of the December 1921 issue, Dinsmore offers scathing criticism of religious Prohibition supporters, namely Billy Sunday and Reverend John Roach Straton. This paper examines how an opinionated independent publication representative of its anti-Prohibition readership reacted to the Temperance Movement and subsequent outspoken Fundamentalist Christian figureheads.

A new dual-campus subject librarian program is being rolled out at the University of Central Florida (UCF) whereby several subject librarians divide their time between two campuses, the legacy main campus in East Orlando and the new Downtown Orlando Campus. As of Fall 2019, four UCF subject librarians regularly travel to the new Downtown Campus to provide library support for academic programs, faculty, and students who recently relocated to the new facility. More recent developments include new acquisition models, advances in platform usability and navigation, more lenient DRM provisions, and improvements to simultaneous user access licenses. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting shift to working from home proved a boon for digital collections. At Clemson University Libraries the metadata team facilitated a work-from-home project, during which 14 employees across two units described a collection of over 2400 photographs. From the standpoint of both the metadata reviewers and metadata creators, we will provide an overview of the project and workflows, including how training, communication, metadata creation, and quality control were managed remotely. This presentation reflects a balanced cross-unit perspective on what worked well and what could be improved for future virtual collaborative projects.

This paper presents the experience of eight Irish academic libraries from the Technological Higher Education Association (THEA) from March – August 2020 while delivering library services during the COVID-19 pandemic. It presents a snapshot of their experience at this time outlining the challenges faced by libraries in closing their doors and pivoting to delivering library services only. For much of this time library buildings were closed to students thereby making, study desks, group spaces, PCs, access to collections and to library staff at information desks unavailable. Managing an institutional repository is not a project in its own right: rather, it is an operational service that involves conversations with faculty, students, and other content providers. However, once those stakeholders decide that the repository is a good, stable, discoverable home for their work, there are projects involved in populating the repository. This article presents a case study of how the author, a music librarian and institutional repository manager at Illinois State University, approached adding thousands of items from the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts into the institutional repository, ISU ReD: Research and eData.

The Anchor: 2020

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This case study describes a multi-year project to reclassify the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ (UNLV) University Archives. UNLV’s Special Collections and Archives decided to rethink and reorganize University Archives based on data collected during an archival collections survey. The steps included moving away from the existing record series classification and implementing a new collection classification schema that will improve discovery and access. This study outlines steps taken during the survey and describes how staff analyzed existing collection records and metadata in order to create more cohesive intellectual control of archival materials across the Special Collections and Archives Division. In recent years, the cost of textbooks has risen drastically, making it an important issue for everyone involved in higher education. Accurate and specific information on the cost of textbooks is needed to effectively address the situation. Over the summer of 2018, a librarian and an undergraduate student at a small liberal arts college assessed the textbook costs at their institution, using methodology developed by community colleges doing similar research. Based on course catalogs, bookstore records, and other resources, they calculated the costs for students in different disciplines over four years of study. On the one-year anniversary of the CCU Digital Commons repository the organization of the Collections / Communities.html page was reviewed to gauge the need for revisions. Over 100 Digital Commons sites were examined to see how other repository managers organized their Collections pages. Top-level communities were coded into Community Types and were analyzed to surface trends in current practice. This presentation reviews trends in practice that emerged during research, as well as some of the best practices that were identified, including planning, iteration, labeling, limiting jargon, and finding a balance with top-level and nested content.
